Prokop, Jan and the Others. The Younger Rabštejn Family in the Turbulences of the Hussite Century

The thesis deals with the significant western Bohemian noble family of the younger Rabštejns in the turbulent "Hussite Century", known also as the short 15th century (1400-1485). The primary focus of the research is the examination of the lives and careers of individual members of the family, the most prominent of which are the Chancellor Prokop († probably 1470) and the humanist Jan (1437-1473), author of the famous Dialogus. Their critically written biographies, appropriately set in the context of the political, religious and cultural history of the given period, review the factual errors of present research and answer the question of how specific nobles of the Rabštejn family managed the dramatic events of the "Hussite Century". The explication elaborated based on a classic genealogical and biographical approach is supplemented by sections on the social and economic rise of the younger Rabštejns in the 15th century, using knowledge from a modern, dynamically developing study of social mobility, royal court issues and noble representation. This, along with extensive source and literary heuristics on which the thesis is based, enables us to look at the history of the studied noble family with multiple lenses and place it in a wider context. Master Hartmann and the Swabian Woodcarving at the Beginning of the 15th Century The stonemason Master Hartmann from Ulm is known to art historians already long time, but his role in Swabian woodcarving at the beginning of the 15th century, however, still evokes numerous questions. Although Hartmann is believed to work simultaneously in the hut and the woodcarving workshop, the average quality of his works, and the fact, that he was accepted as a citizen only in the year 1928, more than ten years after we encounter him in Ulm records for the first time, indicates certain complications of this hypothesis. In this doctoral thesis, Master Hartmann is studied from the perspective of social and cultural situation in Ulm at the beginning of the 15th century. Attention is given to his position in the hut organization on the construction of Ulm Minster and his artistic activity on the western façade, which in its iconographical concept reflects also the historical background. The second part of the thesis focuses on the woodcarving workshop, where the Altarpiece of Dornstadt was made, and on the phenomenon of wide distribution of this style around the entire Swabia. From a Burgher House through the Imperial Court to Loket Castle The Careers of Kaspar and Mates Schlicks in Bohemia, Empire and Saxony (1390-1487) The presented thesis is devoted to the oldest history of the Schlick family. The rise of an originally burgher-class family was based on the court and chancellery career of Kaspar Schlick († 1449); the latter bolstered his successes in the services of Sigismund of Luxembourg and Albrecht and Fridrich Habsburgs by an array of false documents that significantly contributed to the change of his social and economic status (his false promotion to the estate of a count and gaining a fortune). In the second half of the 15th century, after Kaspar's death, his brother Mates and his sons struggled for the preservation of acquired status and health. The following topics were investigated: (1) The utilization of court services and careers for burghers' getting into aristocratic circles, as exemplified by the person of Kaspar Schlick († 1449); (2) The search of strategies the Schlicks - Mates Schlick in particular († 1487) - took to limit themselves from the aristocratic environment, part of which they became. Kingdom of Bohemia - Neighbour of Bavaria in the Late Middle Ages and in the Early Modern Times

DOCTORAL THESIS Ivana HERGLOVÁ --- KINGDOM OF BOHEMIA - NEIGHBOUR OF BAVARIA IN THE LATE MIDDLE AGES AND IN THE EARLY MODERN TIMES --- Abstract --- The thesis is dedicated to research in the field of Bavarian-Bohemian relations, mainly in the field of politics, in the 15th and early 16th century. Main interest is given to the contacts between the Kingdom of Bohemia and the four partial duchies into which Bavaria was subdivided in this period - (Lower) Bavaria-Straubing, Bavaria-Munich, Bavaria-Landshut and Bavaria-Ingolstadt. The work is divided into four large parts. The first goes on the Hussite Wars (1419-1434/36). The second part analyses Czech royal election of the year 1440 and the motives of the selected candidate, the duke Albrecht III of Bavaria-Munich, to finally decline the election. This chapter is followed by a summary of the political cooperation between Czech kings Ladislaus Posthumus (1453-1457) and George of Podiebrad (1458-1471) and the duke Louis/Ludwig IX of Bavaria-Landshut. The last chapter of the thesis describes the attempt of the Bavarian dukes (of the now reunited Duchy of Bavaria) William/Wilhelm IV and Louis/Ludwig X to become the kings of Bohemia as a part of their competition for hegemony in the middle European region with the house of Habsburg.

Joanna of Rožmitál, the life story of a Bohemian queen by the end of the Middle Ages

The life of Joanna of Rožmitál (Rosenthal), who is mainly known as the wife of George of Poděbrady, was much more diverse and richer, than it could seem at first view. Being a noblewoman from a Catholic family, she married a "Calixtine."During her relatively short life, she managed to promote the succession of Jagiellonians to the throne, to participate in provincial diets, to resolve conflicts between Catholic and Calixtine noblemen and, after the death of her husband, to hold the highest office in the state. On the basis of extant sources and narrative literature I will try reconstructing Joanna's life, her court and heir governance along George's side and also after his death. Among other targets, the work will try to portray the life of a medieval noblewomen in a rather uneasy period.

Jaroslav Lev of Rožmitál, diplomat and politician of the late Middle Ages

The thesis deals with the personality of Jaroslav Lev of Rožmitál. On the basis of available sources, it tries to show his life and political activities in the Czech kingdom. He was an important member of the aristocracy in the 15th century, who became famous for his diplomatic tour of Western Europe. He owed his ascension not only to his political skills, but also to the fact that his sister Joanna was the wife of Czech King George of Podiebrad. It was probably thanks to his diplomatic mission that he was more visible as an important politician of his time. He proved his abilities first as the Supreme Judge and then as the supreme Master of the Court. He did not only act in Prague but also in western Bohemia, where he was the Executioner of Pracheň region. Clothing in Masterpieces of the Old Flemish School in the 15th Century

The aim of the Bachelor's Thesis is to present an overview of the evolution of the 15th Century Burgunian fashion. The Thesis is based on the study of the masterpices by the Old Flemish painters and iluminators which had been represented by the official clothing of the Burgundian aristocracy and Flemish elite. The attention is espetially paied to the details of clothes, fabrics, patterns and accessoires. Final results are confronted with the literature and the examples from the 15th Century. Burgundian fashion of Western Europe, which evolved from Gothic is continually compared with clothing from renaissantian Italy and the attention is also paied to the contamporary trade with fabrics
