Matthew of Cracow. His activity in Prague and the manuscripts containing his works in czech milieu
Lužný, Michael ; Zilynská, Blanka (advisor) ; Doležalová, Lucie (referee)
This thesis deals with Matthew of Cracow. This significant late-medieval scholar spent the greatest part of his life, from the 60s until the beginning of 90s of the 14th century, at the Prague university. The majority of his voluminous literary heritage was created during the years spent in Prague. His most important works belonged to the wide reformation movement which was gaining ground in the late 14th century Bohemia, when the crisis of the Catholic Church escalated. The first part provides a brief overview of Matthew's stay in Prague. The emphasis is placed on extant sources proving Matthew's Prague activity, which are confronted with some deductions and assumptions present in older literature. This thesis includes a list of manuscripts containing transcriptions of Matthew's texts kept in Czech institutions. Based on an analysis of this list, the main part of the thesis then shows the reception of his texts in the Bohemian milieu. This kind of research has not yet been conducted in Czech historiography and thus creates a foundation for the future study of Matthew and other members of the Prague pre-Hussite university.

Rokczaner family of Prague's Old Town. From councillors to knights
Chmátal, Jonáš ; Žemlička, Josef (advisor) ; Musílek, Martin (referee)
This bachelor's thesis is focused on Rockzaner family, one significant patrician family of Prague's Old Town. The goal of this thesis is to bring wide biographical description of this family. Similiar biography already exists but just as a part of monumental work of Vaclav Vladivoj Tomek from 70's of 19th century. That is why I am persuaded that such biography should be rewriten to better suit modern historical science. Another goal is to prove that topic of prague's patrician families is not exhausted and there is still a plenty of free space for a research to be done. Next to biographical description this thesis also contains one chapter devoted to Rockzaner's rural estates and its's problematic. As for my opinion this biography should stand as a basis for future research of Rockzaner family and their's economical and social activities. Keywords: Old Town of Prague, patrician, Okor castle, knight, Rockzaner, medieval, medieval city, citizen, location, 14th century, colonization, money loans, rural estates, city council

Tomášková, Tereza ; Hošna, Jiří (advisor) ; Škarpová, Marie (referee)
6 Abstract The thesis is focused on research on the ideal of chivalry and conception of the ideal knight in the medieval literary sources which were written in Czech. Based on the analysis of chivalric rhymed epic and selected chivalric short stories and a comparison of each character of the ideal knights the thesis determines the set of the most important attributes which contribute to formation of the ideal of knighthood. The ideal of knighthood comprises not only virtues such as knight's internal traits, qualities and skills, but the attributes which are rather external as well. The thesis provides mainly the closer analysis of honour, prowess and loyalty, which represent the central concepts of the chivalric ethic. It also deals with the conception of endurance, nobility, wisdom, generosity, piety and justice as other possible attributes of the ideal representative of knighthood.
Gothic Fashion in the Czech Lands in the 14th Century. Development of Clothing Features in the Czech Lands in the Years 1330 -1410
Kuběnová, Veronika ; Sládková, Kateřina (advisor) ; Těšínská Lomičková, Radka (referee)
1 ABSTRACT This thesis presents a study of a field of everyday culture - medieval fashion and its development during the reign of Charles IV of Luxembourg and his son Wenceslas in the Czech lands in the years 1330 - 1410. As these fashion trends and changes were exhibited primarily through the clothing of nobility, this thesis focuses exclusively on the environs of the aristocracy and royal court. In addition to written sources and archaeological finds, the fine arts also serve to advance our knowledge of Gothic fashion trends, whose works authentically capture the contemporary clothing styles and changes in all of Europe. This thesis therefore examines, through a methodical analysis, how wall paintings, panel paintings and book illuminations of Czech provenance reflect changes in clothing fashions and tastes in courtly environs during the period of time known as Luxembourg Gothic. This study of primary iconographic sources in authentic historical buildings and galleries was further aided by the creation of an extensive photo archive. This thesis presents a representative sampling of the works from this archive which documents a basic transformation of Czech clothing culture and the creation of a Bohemian style of Gothic fashion, culminating at the turn of the 14th and 15th century and enriching European...

Vávrová Hanušová, Barbora ; Záruba, František (advisor) ; Šmied, Miroslav (referee)
The form of Karlstejn Castle at the time of Charles IV. Diploma thesis "The form of Karlstejn Castle at the time of Charles IV." deals at first with historical reports not only about the foundation of the castle itself but also about additional events during the life of Charles IV. These events are put in context of the construction form of the castle. The main part of this text is focused on the comprehensive description of the building taking into account previous research and construction plans. Then its construction form is compared with other castles founded by Charles IV. In particular castles Kasperk, Radyne, Karlshaus and Lauf an der Pegnitz are studied in detail. Since in general, castles in the 14th century served primarily residential purposes, this thesis also mentions Karlstejn's indoor arrangements and such building components as heating systems, windows, etc.
Illuminated Manuscripts from the Monastery of Augustinian Canons in Roudnice nad Labem from the Second Third of the 14th Century
Gaudek, Tomáš ; Royt, Jan (advisor) ; Hlaváčková, Jana Hana (referee) ; Studničková, Milada (referee)
The house of canons regular in Roudnice nad Labem was founded 1333 by John IV of Dražice after his return from Avignon. It was a very important and richly supported monastery, which is demonstrated besides other things by the younger fragment of necrologium, dated 1458-1464 (State Regional Archive in Třeboň, fond Velkostatek Třeboň, registratura IA 3K β 28e). The thesis deals with the Bohemian illuminated manuscripts from the 2nd third of the 14th century from the library from Roudnice, which is quite unique between all the Bohemian houses of regular canons for the high percentage of illuminated manuscripts. The Missale of John of Dražice ( KNM XIII B 9) is an excellent example of some high quality manuscript in the time around 1340 in Bohemia. The ornamental initials show parallels to the recent Western European style. One of them, VD initial on the folio 57r, is filled by the coat-of-arms of the Dražice family, gold wine sprig with three leafs in the red field. But the most interesting is the canon leaf (65r), a classical representative of Central European linear style. The leaf was glued to its place. The same praxis we see in the slightly younger Missale of Chotěšov Monastery (NK XIV C 3). The canon leaf from Chotěšov (185v) is more delicate in its colors and forms, distinctly knowledgeable of...
