Ayahuasca neo-shamanic habitus in Czech Republic or what one has to do for becoming an ayahuasca neo-shaman
Herrmann, Natanael ; Kuřík, Bohuslav (advisor) ; Horák, Miroslav (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with what one must do in order to become an ayahuasca neo-shaman, or what specific ayahuasca neo-shaman habitus one must acquire in order to be considered a neo-shaman and to be able to perform ayahuasca rituals. For this the author used methods of carnal ethnography and autoetnography. Ayahuasca rituals are embedded in a broader anthropological theory of rites of passage and are examined in the framework of carnal ethnography by the method of observed participation, while semi-structured interviews with neo-shamans are used also. As part of the autoetnography, the author experienced a neo-shaman habitus on himself, which allowed him to easily look into the otherwise non-transferable structure of the neo-shaman habitus. This research has shown that there are three key parts for the ayahuasca neo-shaman habitus, ie the "ecstatic", "didactic" and "material", but their forms are different for each neo-shaman, due to their specific life trajectories. The resulting ritual is then the product of the specific bricolage of each neo-shaman and mixes elements and techniques of different traditions and cultures. Keywords shaman, shamanism, neo-shaman, neo-shamanism, ayahuasca, habitus, carnal ethnography, autoetnography, ritual, rites of passage
Kambo and its many faces
Civišová, Dagmar ; Kuřík, Bohuslav (advisor) ; Heřmanová, Marie (referee)
This dissertation applies anthropology analysis to study a specie of a tree frog, living in the northern Amazonia, called Kambo. The wax-like substance, which the frog releases upon irritation, is used for its healing potential around the world. A basic conceptual framework is used to analyse the frog from the perspective of modernity, globalisation, and diffusion of cultural dimensions. The dissertation anticipates their influences on multiple parties. The geographical scope of the dissertation is limited on Amazonia and the Czech Republic. Kambo is a host of numerous biochemical interactions; in addition, it is used in socio-material context; in rituals; for gaining, or circulation of experience; or it is part of various techniques of understanding oneself, as described in later works of Michel Foucault. Due to Kambo's alleged participation on creation of human's subjective thinking, the dissertation answers the question on the extent to which Kambo could be responsible, through ethnographic lens. The results show that for those respondents who were experienced Kambo users; using the substance as a potion for treating physiological and mental issues and who were subsequently influenced by New Age movement; Kambo stands as a milestone in their life trajectories. Through the ethnographic research,...
Spiritual searching with salvia divinorum in Prague and its surroundings
Zelený, Jan ; Spalová, Barbora (advisor) ; Bureš, Jiří (referee)
This thesis is concerned in the topic of spiritual searching with Salvia divinorum. Prague and its surroundings have been chosen as the region of interest. Salvia divinorum is extremely potent hallucinogenic substance that can be applied through smoking of extracts or chewing of leaves. Even though prohibited in 2011 In the Czech Republic, the substance is easy to acquire even to this day. In the qualitative part of the research semi-structured interviews were conducted with the users of this plant to obtain information about Salvia divinorum and its relationship to spiritual searching. The analysis of the discourse in the interviews resulted in findings which point us to the conclusion that the experimentation with Salvia divinorum is indeed tightly bound with spiritual searching.
Sacrifice and initiation in the myths of Ódinn
Kozák, Jan ; Chlup, Radek (advisor) ; Antalík, Dalibor (referee) ; Starý, Jiří (referee)
This dissertation deals with the interpretation of four myths from early medieval Scandinavia, in which the main role is played by the god Óðinn. All four myths narrate how he achieved a state of permanent increase of his numinous knowledge. Based on the fact that the outcome of all of the narratives is the acquisition of the Mead of Poetry (or its equivalent), they can be percieved as "four reports on the same event". The analysis of myths itself has been executed in two steps: firstly the separate inquiry of the two more central myths and introduction of the other two followed by thorough analysis of the four together. All four myths demonstrate to a certain degree a presence of motifs and structures associated with the religious phenomena of sacrifice and initiation. By the means of said analysis the study reviews the systematic relations of the sacrificial and initiatory structures and postulates a common core which is subsequently named "monomyth".

Nesrsta, Radek ; Kašpar, Oldřich (advisor) ; Soukup, Václav (referee)
Abstract! ! The aim of this thesis is to search for contact points between the two cultural phenomena, in which, based on sharing the same area and intensive historical contact, I assume connection. Even though yurodstvo and shamanism proceed from different traditions and roots on the first sight. By analysing hagiographical legends and historical sources about individual saints I try to identify the changes, that lead to origin of typical form of "holy foolishnes" in the old Russia, which is unique in Christian world. I address the relationship of "arctic hysteria" or more precisely "klikushestvo" and "menerik" that are most likely forms that "arctic hysteria" takes in area of Siberia, and shamanism. I proceed to search for contact point with phenomena of Russian yurodstvo after short introduction of elementary thesis. Namely in legends, initiation process, clothing and miraculous abilities.!
Pollock and Jung
Dvořáková, Simona ; Lahoda, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Rakušanová, Marie (referee)
To be able to demonstrate Jung's symbolic archetypes of the collective unconscious, I have taken as an example the relation between Jackson Pollock and the analytical psychology of Carl Gustav Jung. At the beginning I have aimed to describe the wider context, the meaning of the unconscious, and key psychological aspects that are necessary to be understood for being able to interpret some of Pollock's early works. At my thesis, I am not talking only about psychotherapy, which he attend for the first time in 1938, but also about his deeper interest of Jungian concepts and archetypes were expressed in his paintings. Since 1941 is obvious that his work contains more elements of imagination. Base on Jung's principles, his work is also more focused on myths and cultures of early civilizations - Assyrian, Egyptian, Mayan and early Colombian art. This impact of unconscious symbolism was also caused by John Graham's theories, and by "Modern Man literatue" of Joseph Campbell or Harvey Fergusson. At the end of my thesis, I am looking for ways of implications of Pollock's experiences within psychoanalysis on visual style of his work. I am trying to find an answer; to what extent is possible to demonstrate the impact of psychoanalytic interpretations on his art. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Holy foolishness and schamanism
Nesrsta, Radek ; Kašpar, Oldřich (advisor) ; Soukup, Václav (referee)
! Abstract! ! The aim of this thesis is to search for contact points between the two socioreligious phenomena, in which we expect continuity on the basis of their own intensive historical ethnic relations. By analyzing hagiographic legends and historical texts, we try to identify changes that the Byzantine phenomenon of foolishness for Christ undergoes after its introduction to cultural environment of Kievan Rus and its changes in the successor states, and we view these phenomena that emerged in this new environment and all together constitute the phenomenon of Russian foolishness for Christ in detail for the purpose of comparison by analogy with shamanism of Central Asian and Siberian ethnic communities. ! ! At the beginning of the work I deal with the nature of the sources and roots that represent foolishness for Christ that can be found in the Byzantine Empire but are linked to the Asia Minor and Mediterranean cultural environment. First, I present the various legends of individual saints. I put the Russian foolishness for Christ phenomenon into a broader historical and religious context to which phenomena that can be seen on the border of foolishness for Christ belong, and I briefly deal with Central Asian and Siberian shamanism. On this basis the analysis of possible cultural exchange and comparison of...
Taltos in Hungarian Culturae Tradition
Horychová, Simona ; Pargač, Jan (advisor) ; Šalanda, Bohuslav (referee)
The aim is to introduce a character of Táltoše in all its complexity. Táltos occurs mainly in Hungarian folklore. It is assumed that in rural environment are kept magic-religious beliefs of Proto-hungarians. Based on comparison of world beliefs Ugro-Finnish and Ural-Altaic ethnic groups of Siberia with the Hungarian folk tradition scientists try to prove that the original function of Táltos was the same as shaman held in Siberian ethnic groups. In the European environment, there are characters with the same attributes which dispose Táltos as well. For this reason, some scientists inclined to an European-Slavic origin. However, at the present Táltos is considered in Hungarian society as a shaman and therefore the scientists try to build on its old religious tradition. Keywords Taltos, shaman, shamanism, Hungarians, ethnogenesis, culture
