Integration of foreign students in the Czech public higher education: difficulties and opportunities

The central theme of this diploma thesis is to analyze key stress factors, which foreign background students meet during their integration in the Czech Republic. All respondents are recruited from the Eastern European countries, for instance, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus. Two main groups include: - students who are in the Czech Republic less than one year - students who are in the Czech Republic for more than one year The primary research method was using a semi-structured interview with eight respondents. For measuring acculturative stress level was used the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), which was filled in by 36 students. There were found differences in the adjustment level and language competence among two groups of students. This research has also confirmed the relationship between the length of stay in the Czech Republic a level of acculturative stress. High school students and the choice of university in families without university education

The bachelor thesis named High school students and the choice of university in families without university education will focus on decision to choose a university from the point of view of a high school student and his parent. The goal of this thesis is to point out factors influencing the choices of a high school student leading to continue study at the university and further to find out, what influences parents in supporting their children in further education. I specifically explore the situation of families, where the parents have not achieved university education. The theoretical part will familiarize the reader with basic concepts connected to choosing univerzity, choosing work and school and family environment, that have an effect on an idnividual. Furthermore in the theoretical part of my thesis, I focus on psychological evolvement of humans beings, specifically adolescence and emerging adulthood. In the empirical part I plan a qualitative research. Semi-structured interviews will be used for data collection. The data will be processed via open coding (grounded theory). School support for pupils suffering from the loss of relatives

This diploma thesis is dealing with the methods teachers and school psychologist may use to approach their pupils who have been affected by the death of their relative, particularly a family member. The theoretical part of the thesis is focusing on the existing research in the area of mourning of school-age children and pays special attention to the risks connected with insensitive approach of teachers in this matter. The thesis tries to introduce some principles of the teacher's sensitive approach during the lessons, while paying extra attention to the personal and moral development of the individual in the area of their perception of surroundings, specifically during Civic Education and Health Education. The next topic in the theoretical part is the cognitive development of pupils and their view on the death itself in general, as it is a part of life that we have to somehow prepare for and thus need to have some kind of knowledge about the difficulties that come with death. Construction of student identity of college students whose parents do not have university degree

This bachelor thesis investigates how student identity of college students whose parents do not have university degree is constructed. Aim is to find out how they reflect their past and current experiences in order to understand the meanings they attribute to subjectively important decisions and breakthroughs in the context of university studies, and to capture processes that play a crucial role in constructing their identity focusing the influence of family support and interest. In the theoretical part, I introduced the concept of social class in psychology and the basic theories of social reproduction and mobility within education. Furthermore, the specifics of the Czech education system are characterized, with a particular focus on tertiary education, values gained by family and school, and first-generation university students. Last but not least, I deal with identity, its definition from the point of view of mainstream and social constructivist psychology and its formation in the period of emerging adulthood and during the transition to university. Academic trajectories of first in the family university students

Sociologists offer a rich description of families from higher and lower social classes in their work. Some individuals, however, manage to break out of the system of social inequalities and receive an academic degree, even though their parents have a lower level of education. The aim of the thesis is to describe the specifics of such students and outline the psychological level of the given issue. Psychological oriented authors in other countries call this population first generation college students. In particular, key life moments that have influenced the individual's educational path will be examined. Another goal will be to find out how such individuals perceive themselves as a student and also find out which attributes are associated with this role. The research also focuses on the family and the wider social environment of the individual to discover whether this social environment provide some support. The thesis also contributed to explanation of motivation and integration as main factors associated with and academic success of students.
