Meanings of Literary Childhood Spaces: The Garden in Twentieth-Century Literature
Izdná, Petra ; Hrbata, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Heczková, Libuše (referee) ; Hrdlička, Josef (referee)
Meanings of Literary Childhood Spaces: The Garden in Twentieth-Century Literature focuses on the analysis of selected twentieth-century childhood novels for adults with regard to the relationship between child character and fictional space, and reflects generally accepted cultural concept of paradisal childhood and its images in literature. In theory, the dissertation is inspired by the treatises on spatiality of human existence by phenomenologists, such as Martin Heidegger, Jan Patočka, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and O. F. Bollnow. It also elaborates insights of the Garden archetype in literary history. The critical reading of selected works examines phenomenological issues, such as child specific perception of space, nature as an extension of the human consciousness, sacred space, home, intimacy of space and death of space. Furthermore, it describes features the literary garden acquires by the union with the child in twentieth-century literature (childhood paradisal gardens, character of divine chid, character of child hermaphrodite, dynamism between fictional house and garden, garden as a miniature of the universe and children games as the imitation of Creation).
Russian Exile and Inner Emigration - an Irregular History of a Cultural Phenomenon.
Souček, Martin ; Czumalo, Vladimír (advisor) ; Hrbata, Zdeněk (referee) ; Urban Otto, (referee)
In my dissertation "Russian Exile and Inner Emigration An Irregular History of a Cultural Phenomenon" I attempt to examine the issue of the Russian mentality against the background of Russian literary and intellectual trends over the course of one hundred years - from the December Revolt in 1825 to the period after the October Revolution in 1917. The phenomenon of inner emigration and exile, which is characteristic for this period of time, is examined through the use of authentic sources, that is solely literary and epistolary records, as well as through the Czech reflection of the Russian soul, as it was perceived and presented from the time of Masaryk and Slavík and after them by many Czech and foreign scholars up to the present. Examining authentic testimonies, the aim of the work is to make the point that despite the confrontation with European rationalist influences, the Russian world and the so- called Russian soul essentially always retained a spiritual dimension from the Eastern civilizations, based not on rationality but on sensation, not on scholastic argumentation of the external existence of God but on a realization of the unity and the inner interconnection of the material and spiritual world.
Theme of pilgrimage in the canonized works of Czech literature
Guse, Michal ; Mravcová, Marie (advisor) ; Hrbata, Zdeněk (referee)
The rigorous work is a beautiful insight into the literary problems of pilgrimage. Author has chosen three fundamental works from the literary canon of the Czech literature and put it through a detailed literary and philosophical analysis. In the first part we see the general overview and explanation of the issue of pilgrimage taking us to the origin of the word and its various meanings of the Czech and world literature, where the topic appears. Important is the processing route of Bachtin's chronotope theory, the concept of time and space by him and later by modern theories of Bílek and Kenan. An extra chapter is dedicated to each of the three analysed works, where are unrolled different theories of views on the theoretical bases. Finally, there are summarized and evaluated the common and different points of surveyed works. The output has a rich list of literary works and it also has a beautiful accompanying illustrations. The theme of pilgrimage through the prism of individual epochs is interesting and worth reading.
Karel Sabina as imitator and creative artist. Text kinship as a source of meaning and knowledge about Sabina's work and its relationship to the works of other authors, especially K.H.Mácha
Charypar, Michal ; Vojvodík, Josef (advisor) ; Hrbata, Zdeněk (referee) ; Haman, Aleš (referee)
The text has the character of a monograph about the literary work of Karel Sabina, which should function as a supplement and a counterpart of the hitherto published "Sabinian" text s focusing mainly on K. Sabina' s "moral profile". It i s a series of interpretations interconnected by a consistent methodical approach- the conception of intertextuality, based especially on Harold Bloom's and Mojmír Otruba' s theories. The main goal ofthe application ofthis method is noetic, i.e. to gain new information about Sabina' s work (in relation to the works of other authors) and with the help ofthe information to attempt to redefine Sabina' s position in the Czech literature and literary history. The text shows Karel Sabina from a new perspective as an extraordinarily talented writer deeply involved in most of the important events forming the total cultural progress ofhis time (late 1830s to early 1870s), and gives thus also a new image about the Czech romanticism. Walking and writing the world. An approach to modernity in Bohemia and France from the beginnig of the 19 th century to the 1948's
Matysová, Kristýna ; Hrbata, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Kyloušek, Petr (referee) ; Hrbata, Zdeněk (referee)
Walking and writing the world. An approach to modernity in Bohemia and France from the beginning of the 19th century to the 1940's In Christian allegoric texts the Pilgrim traditionally symbolizes the journey of mankind to heaven. From the second half of the 19th century on, poets, travelers, and vagabonds pursued the quest of an afterlife from within city walls. This dissertation examines the different representations of modern wandering via an in-depth analysis of the theme as encountered in French and Czech literature and arts from the early 19th century to the 1940's. It reveals, in chronological order, the different artistic approaches to modernity. By bringing out the various patterns that emerge from the texts, while taking into account the historical and social contexts in which they were created, this work adds to existing knowledge on the cultural similarities between France and Bohemia. It also examines the different literary genres which originate from mankind's need to walk and write the world.
French travel books on Italy - the self and the poetics of a voyage (Montaigne, Montesquieu, Sade, Stendhal)
Balcarová, Eva ; Hrbata, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Pohorský, Aleš (referee)
The voyages to Italy constituted a considerable phenomenon of the European culture. This cultural tradition gradually created a rich corpus of peculiar literature. Every now and then, a travel journal or a traveller's correspondence comes out that has not been published before, there are many exhibitions of the artists that sought their inspiration beyond the Alps and it was because of the rich Italian art that Italy became the final destination of the Grand Tour. Apart from the Englishmen, the French were the most numerous group of travellers on the Apennine Peninsula. Even the political situation contributed to the impact of the Italian culture on the French one, especially the Great Italian Wars and the subsequent presence of the Medici family on the French throne. Four texts were chosen from the plenitude of French works dedicated to the voyage to Italy: the travelogues of Montaigne, Montesquieu, Sade and Stendhal. The choice of such eminent personalities, who got famous, in the first place, through other works than those depicting the journeys over the Alps, made it possible to focus on the way this voyage influenced their further oeuvre. In their perception of Italy, both the distinct eras of cultural development to which they belonged and their diverse personalities are reflected: Montaigne's journey...
Fairy tale as a phenomenon (comparative reading of fairy tales)
Negative humanism of Michel Houellebecq
Echoes of national ideals in the Trilogies of Alois Jirásek and Henryk Sienkiewicz
Bruknerová, Tereza ; Hrbata, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Vaněk, Václav (referee)
(in English): Diploma thesis Echoes of National Ideals in the trilogies of Alois Jirásek and Henryk Sienkiewicz focuses on a comparative analysis of the historical prose of the two most popular writers of this literary genre. Their historical novels and political appearances played an important role during the Czech and Polish struggles for national independence since the last third of the 19th century. The thesis focuses on literary representation of specific historical events and personalities associated with the so-called golden age of national history (Sarmatism in the Polish case, Hussite in the Czech) - on range, manner and role of ideologization or mythization in Sienkiewicz's Trilogy (Fire and Sword, The Deluge, Fire in the Steppe) and in Jirásek's three-part epic Against All. To understand the national views of both authors, the theoretical concept of political myth is taken into consideration in the analysis of novels.
