Metadata integration in data warehouse

This diploma thesis aim at the implementation of metadata in the context of data warehouses and Business Intelligence. Metadata can provide significant benefits to the organization, help address regulatory requirements, and increase the use of BI tools to prevent user denial. The main goals of the diploma thesis are the metadata integration according to the theoretical knowledge from the first part of this thesis and the practical implementation of the solution of consolidating business and technical metadata in the second part of the thesis. The first chapter defines the goals of the work and the expected benefits. The second chapter defines the concept of metadata, types and standards. Chapter three provide metadata context in the perspective of company's data governance, and summarize an analytical market for metadata and data integration tools. The fourth chapter evaluates the usability of metadata based on research on the subject. The fifth chapter describes one of the possible metadata integration solutions according to the theoretical knowledge summarized in the preceding chapters. The sixth chapter summarizes the practical experience of implementing the solution into the insurance company BI environment. The main contribution of the thesis is the description of implementation of the real solution and its evaluation.
Processing image metadata in XSLT/XQuery

This bachelor thesis deals with how to obtain information from image formats, especially those that use Exif specification for storing metadata, which offers a lot of information about the image. The work focuses on creating a library that gets these meta-data from the image using XSLT, XQuery and XPath. A simple application/transformation is also part of the work, which can extract the metadata from the enclosed images and display them to the user.
The use of metadata in an environment of Self-Service Business Intelligence

This bachelor thesis is focused on the use of metadata in an environment of Self-Service Business Intelligence. Metadata are structured data that contain information used to de-scribe other data. They contain information about the origin, purpose, location, content and other properties of said data. The main advantage of the self-service BI tools lies in the fact, that the end user customizes the outputs of said tools (reports, data visualizations, etc.) to his own liking. The aim of this thesis is to briefly explain and define the concept of Self-Service Business Intelligence and the concept of metadata, to describe the purpose and benefits of using business metadata. Furthermore, to explore the possibilities of selected tools in context of metadata, more importantly - business metadata. The main contribution of this work is to reveal the possibilities of working with business metadata for selected tools and its empiric testing.
Long-term Preservation of Web Content

This work describes the long term preservation of digital documents, particularly websites. The aim of this work is to give an explanation of the long term preservation, to define the differences between various approaches and to describe long term preservation of web content possibilities such as migration or emulation. It also explains risks and challenges of these strategies. It discusses new problems which the long term preservation aim leads to. It also describes possible solutions as well as it describes the situation in selected significant foreign institutions. The main aim of this work is detailed analysis of long term preservation strategy in theNational Library of the Czech Republic, which is the only institution engaged in the preservation of Czech web. The process of data preparation, metadata creation and data storing in the long term repository of the Czech National Library is thoroughly described, including examples and their explanation. Management and description of geographic data in the field of environment of the Czech Republic

This thesis describes and analyzes the current state of environmental management of geographic data within geoinformation infrastructure of the Czech Republic in response to European legislation. The work is divided into four main parts. The first part deals with geoinformation infrastructure of the Czech Republic in its basic components due to the efficiency of the management of geographic data. Another part deals with the general characteristics of geospatial data underlying the description methods, organization and retrieval in the next section. The final part of its qualitative research describes in detail the management of geospatial data in the environmental sector, which is affected by the phenomenon of the implementation of INSPIRE and draws conclusions and recommendations. The work also supports the analysis of the availability of data sources for the implementation of the INSPIRE directive, the questionnaire used as a guide for research purposes, to illustrate the services Geoportal three pictures. Digital repositories at universities in the Czech Republic

The aim of this thesis is to present, analyse, compare and evaluate the current state of digital repositories at universities in the Czech Republic that use a software application for their digital repository. A theoretical part, which introduces the reader into the issue of compilation and operating of digital repositories in the Czech academic context, precedes the practical reserach. The crucial chapter of the practical part are the results of the actual analysis. The results of a supplementary survey of universities that do not run a digital repository with usage of software application and choose a different way of storage and access to their grey literature draw on the results of this analysis. The conclusion of the entire thesis is the outline of future development of the investigated issue and the perspective of further progress of the Czech academic milieu.
Google Book Search : the analysis of the system and its usage in the Czech Republic

The topic of this master's degree diploma thesis is the Google Books service, formerly Google Book Search and Google Print. The wider general context is described briefly in the first two chapters. Google company and its portfolio of services are introduced, as well as the latest progress in sharing of information, for example trends as digital libraries and open access. Third chapter presents results of the analysis of the Google Books as the complex system. Mentioned are: a history of the service, Library Project, Partner Program, metadata harvesting, scanning methods, available searching options, all information and functionalities in the individual records, users' participation. Chapter four is focused on copyright law and disputes related to the Google Books. Fifth chapter deals with the usage of the Google Books in the Czech Republic, in the terms of all local activities. Great attention belongs to digitization in cooperation of Google company with National Library of the Czech Republic. Two questionnaires were done for this thesis, between college students and large Czech publishers. Services over digital archives in science and research

The thesis focuses on various information services over digital archives and institutional repositories in the area of science and research. It aims to ascertain these online services and introduce, analyse and assess selected examples in detail. Their quantitative as well as qualitative features are emphasized - The work is logically divided into four chapters. The first one defines the basic terminology and outlines the contemporary status of scholarly communication on the Internet. The second chapter introduces a comprehensive list of services as well as their suggested typology. The third chapter constitutes the core of the thesis and presents the descriptions and analysys of the selected services. The fourth final part includes the comparison of their relevant parameters, final assessment and the perspectives of their future development.
