Václav Voska's theatre, film and television acting in Czech artistic and social context in the second half of twentieth century

SUMMARY: This thesis focuses on theatre, film and television acting of one of the important representatives of Czech dramatic art in Czech artistic and social context in the second half of the twentieth century. The aim of this work is to depict means of expression used by Vaclav Voska in his roles. It provides summary of actor's theatrical work and in the part dedicated to his TV acting tries to comprehensively describe compering television series "We invite you to the theatre". The following part is dedicated to film acting, especially to his cooperation with the Film Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. The work neither neglects his teaching at the Faculty of Performing Arts Theatre nor his political career. The essential part of this thesis is focuses on his role of Emile Magis in Félicien Marceau's game The Egg. The work purposely omits on Vaclav Voska's production of spoken word (radio, Poetic Cafe Viola, Lyra Pragensis) and it refers only to his major achievements only if they are relevant for analyzed topics. Complete list of theatre and film production is given at the end of his work. The TV list is only a selection with regard to the factual ambiguity at the beginning of the functioning of the medium. Staging elements and procedures in a TV news in the Czech Television and TV Nova

Thesis "The Staging elements and procedures in a TV news in the Czech Television and TV Nova" reveals the elements that modify the perception of stories in TV news. Staging will be analyzed on commercial TV Nova and public Czech Television. Thesis is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on theoretical background elements of staging in the news. Work also shows the way, how the makers of news work with staging elements. TV News session is understood as distinctive kind of productions, like theater performance. At first the elements are discussed, then the presence of the elements in news of Czech Television and TV Nova is demonstrated. With that works the second part of rhe thesis, which shows individual examples of staging. The work is mainly about trying to identify, document and classify the elements of staging in examples of Czech television news.
Use of mask in the Jacques Lecoq method

The theme of my thesis is the use of mask in the Jacques Lecoq method. The first part focuses on general principles of Lecoq's method, it's structure and content. The second part deals with the method in the context of 20th century French theatre. This part also concerns with some important connections regarding J. Lecoq's proffesional expierences with French theatre and his own work. In the last part, the attention is paid to a detailed study of particular types of masks which are used in the method. Finally, as a description of the way of work with these masks follows with a special focus on their meaning in actors' training.
ACTING IN THE LIFE AND THE LIFE IN ACTING

This thesis deals, in general, with the topic of theatrical experience of a young person, and examines everyday life influences on his artistic life and on the development of art within the person self. It poses questions and looks for answers to some of those questions in the specialist literature, or by deducing from personal experience.First, numerous influences that affect a person during his studies are presented, the importance of a person’s psychological profile, as well as his understanding of himself, and of the world around him. Later on, personal experience from professional carrier is described. I am disclosing character work in the DISK theatre and I am trying to find reasons for my feelings, both, good and bad, during the rehearsing processes, and the cause of my successes and failures. Acting, on stage as well as in front of the camera, is described from an unusual point of view, focusing greatly on details that are oftentimes overlooked.The new perspective from which I am trying to present acting and the life of an artist consists not only of the professional tools for mastering the craft - such as learning new parts, adopting the technical skills, etc. - but emphasizes humanity, underlines its importance, and searches for a threshold between professional and personal life of an actor.
Making Theatre in London

The thesis examines contemporary British theatre focusing on the dynamic between a playwright, a director and an actor, which is very different in the UK from continental Europe. Describing specific London productions as well as the history of modern British theatre, it tries to identify what are the defining characteristics of British directing, acting and playwriting. Each chapter focuses on one of these elements and defines British theatre in realation to the Czech scene. By comparing selected productions of the same British play in Prague and London the author draws attention to the possible difficulties that might arise while staging British drama in a different cultural context.

The thesis describes my personal experience which I gained during my studies at the Academy of Performing Arts (DAMU), rehearsals at the Theatre Studio Disk as well as experience gained out of school. This experience is illustrated with several examples of practical work which I participated in.
Stress in acting

Main topic of this thesis is psychological stress of an actor during his performance. Thesis describes psychological stress in general, shows categorization, determines its causes and reactions of body exposed to stress during long and short timeload. Special attention is dedicated to stress management (coping) and to mechanics of its intervention and prevention. Stressing working conditions and actors personality traits that can reduce or increase stress are researched on this theoretical background. Some of most casual stress phenomena are analyzed. Also reflection of the nature and importance of stress in acting is presented.
Acting in theater and in front of camera

This thesis is about acting in theater or in front of camera. At the beginning it is focused to these directions individually and later summarizes their differences, which include: what function the audience has; what options of movement the performer has; what style direction the actor uses; what the difference of collaborations between actors on the stage or in front of the camera have.It talks about the different approach of directors and self-expressions of actors and analyzes the different effects that each actor during their performance. It doesn’t only talk about the differences, but also includes the inter-connections of both styles. The next part is focused on creating a character and comparison of current and passed actors that were acting in theater as well as in movies. The conclusion is about my personal acting experience in film and in theater. It evaluates my work at the school theater DISK and also asses the transition to my advanced work.
