Hřivna, Vít ; Kunertová, Tereza (advisor) ; Pítrová, Lenka (referee)
Separatist tendencies in individual EU Member States and the potential impact on the free movement of persons in the EU This thesis deals with the separatist tendencies within the Member States of the European Union. It is therefore a case when a certain region within a Member State decides to secede from it. This needs to be distinguished from a situation when a whole Member State decides to withdraw from the Union. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the various possible scenarios in the case where there is a separation of that region from the Member State. It deals with it in the context of the regions potential continuity within the Union and furthermore it examines the differences between the two most important cases of possible internal secession in the EU of today: Catalonia and Scotland. The thesis evaluates the most probable scenarios in both cases and the consequent impact of such subjective secession of the regions on citizens and their rights in the EU context, in particular the free movement of persons. The first chapter deals with the definition of separatism and general characteristics of the practical behavior of the regions and the state they secede from in the context of the EU. It looks especially at the relationship between the originar country and the separatist region and...

The Manifestations of Catalan Nationalism
Nováková, Dora ; Grygar, Jakub (advisor) ; Kandert, Josef (referee)
Catalonia is an autonomous community of Spain. Catalans are one of the nationalities that are recognized by Spanish constitution; however they see themselves more as a nation than just a nationality. Catalans have their own culture, history and language. For many reasons Catalans wish to live in their own state separated from Spain, which leads to the conflict between many Catalans and Spanish people. This thesis describes this conflict from the author's point of view as she had the opportunity to observe the situation during 10 months she spent in Barcelona. This text should respond one question: What in particular are the manifestations of the Catalan nationalism? The author uses ethnographic approach to describe the main components of this nationalism. Using participant observation and informal interviews she defines three main groups of these manifestations. First she considers significant the importance of Catalan language which is a key element of the Catalan culture. The other manifestations of the nationalism can be found in the use of national symbols and in the collective rituals.

Malcolm X and His Significance for the African-American Rights Movement
Marinovová, Klára ; Raška, Francis (advisor) ; Kozák, Kryštof (referee)
The bachelor thesis "Malcolm X and his significance in the Civil Rights Movement" deals with life, ideology and philosophy of Malcolm X, representative of radical branch of African- American Civil Rights struggle. The work in its first part is based on Marcus Garvey's nationalistic ideas of black pride and racial exceptionality, which had an enormous impact on Malcolm during his childhood. In its second part it is based on incessant terror from supremacist groups and the pressure of white society. This all eventually ended up in breaking up of Malcolm's family and it contributed to his criminal activity in the streets of New York, district of Harlem. Text also deals with Malcolm's stay in prison, his acquaintance with ideology of Nation of Islam and his subsequent conversion to Islam and beginnings of his preaching career. Important passage is dedicated to comparison of thoughts and stands of Malcolm X with those of Martin L. King, often more respected representative of Civil Rights Movement's moderate section. Later withdrawal from Nation of Islam and Malcom's pilgrimage to Mecca were both highly significant events in his life changing his attitudes, which continued to modify and develop until his premature death. Based on analyses of Malcolm's life experience and thus his beliefs and attitude to...
Separatism in the post-Soviet space: Analysis and comparison of cases Transnistria and Abkhazia
Michalec, Petr ; Dostál, Petr (advisor) ; Hoch, Tomáš (referee)
The topic of this thesis is a comparation of separatist tendencies of Transnistria in Moldova with Abkhazia in Georgia in the post-Soviet space. From the point of view of separatism in these de facto government departments the focus of this work is not only on the current sate and development. Motives and historical traumas are shown and reflected in today's context because understanding of history is the key for present explanation. It seems that the situation in both areas is similar, but explanations and reasons for secession are in some points different. However, comparation and explanation of the different aspects of the development is the basis to understand the past, present and future state in Transnistria and Abkhazia not only in terms of separatism, but also locally-political, geo-political and socio- economic progress or stagnation. Key words: Moldova, Transnistira, Gruzia, Abkhazia, separatism, Russia, Soviet Union, soviet heritage, European Union, secession
The European Union and the unrecognized states in Georgia
Kasalová, Michaela ; Najšlová, Lucia (advisor) ; Aslan, Emil (referee)
This thesis considers the role of the European Union in dealing with the problem of unrecognized states on the territory of Georgia. The aim of the thesis is to find out which tools the EU employs in solving this problem. Unrecognized states are rejected as partners of the international community, thus they lack the basis for entering international relations, the external sovereignty. Nevertheless, this doesn't prevent them from functioning internally and offering their citizens functions similar to ordinary sovereign states. Since the unrecognized states in Georgia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, are considered parts of Georgia, this thesis will also examine how the EU employs its tools in Georgia and in the unrecognized entities and the influence of the non-recognition of these states on the engagement of the EU in them. Abkhazia and South Ossetia were created shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the following ethnopolitical conflicts in the South Caucasus. Since then, the unrecognized states have developed and built a national identity which is opposed to the former central state, Georgia. They have become seemingly independent, however, their existence is dependent on several factors, most importantly, the presence of an external patron, in this case Russia. The engagement of the...
