Unintended consequences of human domination over nature: Adorno and Bookchin
Lindaurová, Anežka ; Švec, Ondřej (advisor) ; Jirsa, Jakub (referee)
In his texts, Theodor W. Adorno subjects the organization of Western societies to harsh criticism in the second half of the 20th century. Especially in the Dialectic of Enlightenment, of which he is a co-author, he criticizes the current form of rationality, which he puts in context with the oppression, domination and commodification of the surrounding world and others. In this bachelor's thesis, I deal with the interpretation of Adorno's concept of dominion as a concept whose critique can potentially help us to better articulate the problematic aspects of our current relationship to non-human nature and to others. For a better understanding of this issue and its connection with environmental philosophy, I chose the theory of social ecology by Murray Bookchin. In his book Ecology of freedom, he talks about the creation of hierarchical relationships in human communities as the main cause of man's domination over non-human nature. Both authors contextualize the dominion we exercise over nature with the dominion we exercise over others. Bookchin then draws on Adorno in his critique of rationality, and both criticize the instrumentalization of reason, which instead of cognition serves as an instrument of control. At the same time, both present possible solutions to the current situation, which consist...
Left-wing terrorism: the case of the Red Brigades in Italy and the Red Army Faction in Germany
Budilová, Michaela ; Charvát, Jan (advisor) ; Hájek, Lukáš (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the phenomenon of left-wing terrorism in Italy and West Germany, two Western democracies where terrorism has emerged more than anywhere else in Europe. Terrorist organizations, including the Red Brigades (RB) in Italy and the Red Army Faction (RAF) in West Germany, emerged in an environment of political and social conflict and radicalized protests against the state establishment. These organisations were chosen for this diploma thesis because of their prominent status, their longevity and the influence they have gained in the field of left-wing terrorism. In its comparative analysis, the thesis attempts to simultaneously interweave three different levels of analysis: the socio-political contexts of Italy and West Germany (macro-level), a focus on the two terrorist groups and their organizational dynamics (meso-level), and the ideology and motivations of the terrorists (micro-level). The aim of this thesis is to explore and gain insight into the RB and RAF organisations in terms of ideology and to describe the factors behind the rise and fall of these terrorist organisations.
Production shifting from China to Vietnam: Implications for Global Value Chains
Maderová, Karolína ; Semerák, Vilém (advisor) ; Vacek, Pavel (referee)
This thesis analyzes the importance of China within the global economy and assesses the potential of Vietnam to serve as its replacement, or at least for some industries. Using the network analysis and the hypothetical extraction method (HEM), the most influential sectors of the Chinese economy were identified and an increasing trend of reliance of the Westen countries on China's supply and demand was found. Next, using the trade decomposition method, the participation in GVC for Vietnam and China was calculated. Although Vietnam is increasing its participation and other countries are increasing their demand for inputs from Vietnam, based on the available data, it was not possible to determine whether these changes could mean that Vietnam can replace China in the future. Comparative analysis of differences between western and eastern news outlets reporting on the Russian invasion of Ukraine
Neumann, Jakub ; Koblovský, Petr (advisor) ; Shavit, Anna (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the analysis of the rhetoric of the Izvestia media in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Based on a careful examination and critical analysis of the articles examined, this bachelor's thesis compares and contrasts the ways in which Western and Eastern media outlets have dealt with this conflict, especially in light of their news interests and propaganda. It then goes on to map which narratives the Izvestia media use and which are most common in their articles. The results show the frequent use of false or misleading claims by the news outlet Izvestia. They also show the different portrayal of reality between Western and Eastern media in specific analyzed articles.
"These are citizens of our country. We are their servants." A case study of Pierre Poilievre as an example of growing Canadian populism within the framework of Cas Mudde's scholarship
Mola-Schmidt, Amelia ; Shavit, Anna (advisor) ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (referee)
As scholars who have studied populism in the Canadian context have noted, Canada has previously held a false sense of immunity to the rise of populism due its multiculturalism that was seen as a barrier for the traditional xenophobic and culturally exclusive values of populist politicians in other Western democracies. Forms of populism that have arisen in Canada have taken the form of "neoliberal populism", an ideology rooted in fiscal conservatism and the belief that less government intervention is better. However, the election of Pierre Poilievre as leader of the Federal Conservative party has indicated a shift in the political spectrum, that populism is gaining traction on a mainstream level. As Cas Mudde has written about in his literature on populism, the mainstream media play an active role in shaping the discourse around populists, often giving them more air time due to their sensationalist behaviour that make for viral soundbites. So how has the Canadian media responded to Poilievre, and how does the political alignment of media impact the coverage he gets? This study will seek to answer these questions and provide insights into how the Canadian media may contribute to further political polarisation in society.
Water retention in the Úhlavka catchment area
Lukášová, Karolína ; Janský, Bohumír (advisor) ; Matějček, Tomáš (referee)
Water retention in the landscape is a very current topic these days. Thanks to a warming climate, we have to deal with hydrological extremes, erosion, or accelerated water runoff. If we choose to improve the retention capacity of the landscape, we can help transform flood waves, slow down runoff, and mitigate soil water erosion. In the agricultural landscape, we solve the mentioned problems by combining near natural measures and technical measures. This master thesis focuses on water retention in the Úhlavka basin, which is located in western Bohemia and forms a tributary of the Mže River. In the theoretical part, the physical-geographic properties of the area of interest and the rainfall-runoff process are characterized. A literature research is also carried out regarding retention, its components, and the factors influencing it. Furthermore, the individual types of measures that can be used to improve the state of retention in the landscape are also listed. The practical part offers a process of choosing a specific area for proposals in the Úhlavka basin. The Olešná basin was chosen, where the majority of the land cover is agricultural and, thanks to its geomorphological properties, it was also included in the list of critical areas. Three grassed strips, a swale, and strips of crops rotation...
Media imperialism and its possible influence on identity perception: The case of Lebanese youth
Abdul Baki, Sandra ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (advisor) ; Lábová, Sandra (referee)
Western media imperialism in the Global South has long been a discussion in media studies. Lebanon, a country in the Levantine region, is often characterized by its conflicting Arab and Western identities. This study investigates whether the domination of Western media in the entertainment industry plays a role in shaping the cultural identity of the Lebanese youth towards a more Westernised one. The study uses a cross-sectional survey of 140 respondents aged 18-25 from five main universities in Lebanon. The study analyses the collected data through descriptive and inferential statistics. The study reveals that the higher the consumption of Western entertainment media, the weaker the fulfillment with local culture on the one hand and the higher the identification with Western culture on the other hand. In addition, respondents who have high consumption of Western entertainment media tend to adopt Western cultural preferences of wearing Western fashion, listening to Western music, and being fluent in both Arabic and Western languages at the same level. Louthanová, Terezie ; Šamánková, Karolína (advisor) ; Mazaná, Vladislava (referee)
This thesis analyses Korean maps made by Koreans during the Chosŏn kingdom period from its beginning until the arrival of protestant missionaries to the Korean peninsula, which is when Korea was exposed to the direct influence of the western sciences. The first part of this thesis introduces the topics of cartography, the history of cartography, korean cartography during the Chosŏn period and the wider cartographic contexts in the East Asia region. The second part contains the analysis of the maps which depict Chosŏn in the regional context, that is, world or regional maps and maps of the border areas. The purpose of the analysis is to understand how the maps reflect Korean perception of the world and of the region Chosŏn is a part of during the time of their creation and which art genres, political relations with neighbouring countries and religious or philosophical beliefs are expressed in the maps.

Kratochvílová, Adéla ; Skovajsa, Marek (advisor) ; Šubrt, Jiří (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the topic of death and dying from classical to contemporary sociology in the modern Western societies. The thesis is divided into five parts in which the theoretical concepts of each author are discussed chronologically in sequence along with their classification into theoretical approaches. In the first part, the thesis is focused on the consideration of language in relation to the topic and it provides historical context to complete the overall picture of the changes the view of death and dying has been transformed in. The next chapter is focused on classical sociologists and thematization of the topic in their works. Furthermore, it covers the longest time-period of modern theories in the second half of the twentieth century, categorizing them into relevant theoretical approaches. The thesis concludes with the period of postmodern theories. Finally, all findings all connected in the final part of the thesis, discussion.
