Cognitive sequelae from methanol poisoning
Bernášková, Lucie ; Kulišťák, Petr (advisor) ; Šivicová, Gabriela (referee)
This thesis focuses on cognitive functions in patients after methanol poisoning. The theoretical part consists of a description of methanol, characteristics of methanol poisoning and its neurological sequelae. Methanol poisoning affects the basal ganglia, therefore we describe them and their role in cognitive processes. The theoretical part also describes a case of mass methanol poisoning in the Czech Republic in 2012-2013. The practical part compares results of a control group and a group of patients poisoned with methanol in cognitive assessment. Results show that the patients after methanol poisoning have significantly lower scores in tasks testing memory and executive functions than the control group.
The Crisis Communication of the Government of the Czech Republic during the Bootleg Alcohol Affair in 2012
Hájek, Lukáš ; Shavit, Anna (advisor) ; Klimeš, David (referee)
Bachelor's thesis The Crisis Communication of the Czech Cabinet During the Bootleg Methyl Alcohol Affair of 2012 deals with the case study of the governmental institution's crisis communication during the unprecedented crisis. The theoretical background of a crisis communication is described in the first part of the thesis by several native Czech and foreign crisis communication experts. The image of an ideal crisis communication model is described by the findings of their studies and the conclusions drawn for them. The ideal crisis communication model defines the proper communication process and communication strategies for each phase. Then the thesis analyses the role of the Czech Cabinet, the main player of the crisis, and its communication structure. The unprecedented crisis of the so-called the bootleg methyl alcohol affair, is also described. Furthermore the thesis deals with the crisis communication of the Czech Cabinet and its governmental departments by analysis of communication outputs. The media reflection on the communication outputs of the Czech Cabinet is also delineated. In the end the crisis communication is judged by its success and by comparison to the conclusions of crisis communication specialists. The evaluation is accompanied by specific suggestions for improvement of the...
Effect of methanol affair on patterns of alcohol use in the Czech Republic: online survey
Přibylová, Eva ; Vacek, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Vavrinčíková, Lenka (referee)
In the fall of 2012 took place in the Czech Republic, the methanol case - were poisoned and subsequently to the death of many people. According Zakharov (2013, oral communication) is currently the actual number of victims as 58, with the death of the last of methanol poisoning occurred in early December 2013. Methanol was poisoned dozens of people, from those who survived methanol poisoning has many of them probably lifelong consequences - especially disturbances and disorders of the central nervous system. The main objective of this thesis is to describe what has or has Methanol cause effects on patterns of alcohol and behavior related to alcohol use among target groups and to compare any differences in terms of socio-demographic characteristics, the awareness about the issue of methanol and patterns of use (including use of a harmful dependence). For the realization of this investigation was chosen quantitative research. The theoretical part focuses on alcohol (pharmacodynamics, kinetics, effects of alcohol on the human body or patterns of use). I mention the alcohol addiction and treatment options. I also deal with methanol (kinetics, metabolism, toxicity and poisoning), and finally to the specific aspects of mass poisoning with methanol in the Czech Republic. Data were collected from 25 May to...
Effect of partial prohibition on restaurants from the perspective of employees: a qualitative investigation

Attitudes and options of nurses in the care of methanol poisoned patients (theoretical thesis)
DVOULETÁ, Zuzana
Methanol poisoning usually comes to the forefront of both professional and general public interest at times, when there is a larger outbreak, outside of these periods these cases appear sporadically. They occur in the whole world, in the developed countries as well as in the developing ones, independently of any restriction on the consumption of alcoholic beverages by the state. In Czech society this topic came to surface especially in 2012, when as a result of methanol intoxication the minimum of 50 people died and many more suffer permanent damage. The trickiness of methanol lies in the fact, that it is not possible to recognize it from ethanol in an alcoholic drink or in any other mixture. Most often it penetrates the organism by way of ingestion; it can also be absorbed through the skin or by inhalation. Methanol itself is not toxic; its metabolites (formaldehyde and formic acid) however present a problem. Typical symptoms include visual disturbances, deepening metabolic acidosis with an increased anion gap and damage to basal ganglia, particularly the putamen. The intoxication is further accompanied by a range of nonspecific symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, impairment of consciousness and cognitive functions. The gravity of the intoxication depends on the amount of ingested methanol and on the mixing ratio with ethanol. Therapy consists of administering specific antidotes ethanol or fomepizole, modifying of the internal environment, continuous or intermittent hemodialysis, if necessary and allowed by the patient's condition and in supportive treatment for maintaining the stability of vital functions. Nursing care has an unreplaceable role in treatment of these patients. Nurses come to contact with these patients in every sector of healthcare, they take part in admission, stabilization and monitoring of vital functions, they tend to the invasions as well as to maximal psychic and physical comfort of the patient. They take part in rehabilitation and also help patients returning into normal life. This thesis deals with the properties of methanol, its production and toxicity, it explores methanol intoxication, its symptoms and sequelae, diagnostics and therapy as well as nursing care in detail. It follows the role of nurses of all the sectors of health care in managing all the stages of the intoxication with emphasis on selected nursing activities in the intensive, standard or aftercare. The thesis concludes with 4 documented case studies. The aim of this thesis was to process the information collected on this topic into a complex and current overview of knowledge on methanol poisoning and the possibilities of dealing with it all of the phases of the poisoning including the aftercare of the patients who were affected. A summary of procedures and variations thereof was acquired on the theoretical basis of Czech and foreign sources such as books, renowned periodicals in paper or electronic form and by means of web sites of professional societies. The sum of knowledge this thesis provides can serve for teaching needsor continuing education of healthcare workers concerning diagnostics, therapy and management of the sequelae of this intoxication with special emphasis on the possibilities of nurse´s intervention in any of the phases of it, or to provide base for further research in this area.
