Twitter as an additional battlefield? Analysis of Israel Defense Forces' social media campaign during the Great March of Return

The respective master's thesis examines the relationship between frames and narratives and how they resonate with images on social media. In the present thesis I research how Israel Defense Forces framed the protests in Gaza also known as the Great March of Return from 30 March 2018 to 30 March of 2019 on Twitter. While analyzing the twitter account of Israel Defense Forces, I apply Entman's (1993) elements of framing and identify broader strategic narratives that Israel currently employs. The broader strategic narratives include "Israel as the only democracy in the Middle East"; "Israel as a startup nation" and "Israel as the leader in combating Islamic terrorism". In the theoretical part I also reflect on previous research and studies engaging with social media and its use by militaries. In the analytical part I identify individual frames that Israel Defense Forces have repeatedly employed during the protests in the respective timeframe. Each frame is accompanied by visual content and if available by the strategic narratives.

Non-Systemic Opposition in Russia 2011-2016

The diploma thesis examines why did the non-systemic opposition in Russia between 2011 and 2016 fail to reach any significant success. Even though during 2011 and 2012 Russia witnessed mass anti- government protests the non-systemic opposition was not able to enforce any relevant change in the regime, obtain representation in the state institutions or induce larger public dissatisfaction with the regime. The study analyses problematic internal features of the non-systemic opposition (lack of public support, coalition potential, election programs and campaigns, party financing) and external repressive means of the Vladimir Putin's regime against the opposition (legislation, direct confrontation, judicial trials, elections and means of rigging). The thesis offers a complex insight into the functioning of the non-systemic opposition in Russia in the observed period and accentuates the authoritarian character of the Russian regime. Based on the evaluation of the key variables the study concludes that the repressive policies of the regime cardinally affected the weakness and fragmentation of the non-systemic opposition which moreover was not able to overcome the internal conflicts and gain broader public support.

The Ukrainian crisis in the news coverage made by ČTK and its comparison with ČT news with focus on crucial events within the conglict

This diploma thesis points out differences in the reporting methods of CTK and CT, the two public service's media, regarding the Ukrainian crisis. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on both of these media's properties with emphasis on their foreign coverageas well as related medial terms' definitions. One chapter is reserved to cover Ukraine as a state and its political history since the SovietUnion's disintegration through to 2014 and the Ukrainian crisis development; further studying the relationship between Ukraine and the Russian Federation resulting in the crisis in 2013. In the practical part of the thesis quantitative and qualitative methods are used to determine how much attention and screen-time both media dedicated to the crisis, which parties were given opportunities to comment and identify other sources of information. Keeping in mind the fact that CT had four reporters on site at it's disposal, the thesis tries to find out how big of an influence that had on the overall production, processing and tone of the television news and to what degree the production of both media agreed or diverged.

Stuttgart 21: political and social reflection

This thesis Stuttgart 21: public and political reflection deals with the railway and urban project Stuttgart 21, in particular with the public and political actions related to the project. The thesis starts with summarization of the factual information about the project and follows with presentation of analyses of the actual protests, which culminated on the "black Thursday" in 2010, when the serious conflict between protesters and police officers occurred. The government reacted by arranging a settlement through the so called dialogs of conciliation, which should have helped to recover from the escalated situation. At these dialogs, which were moderated by the politician Heiner Geißler, supporters and opponents of the project and experts in the area gathered. After these dialogs, the situation calmed down mildly. Solution of the dispute related to the Stuttgart 21 project was really important because the elections to the Landtag of Baden-Württemberg followed shortly after (March 2011). Because of the actions in connection with the Stuttgart 21 project and also because of the nuclear energy elections topic, which emerged due to the accident in Fukushima, the 'Die Grünen' party came into power. American opposition to the Vietnam war

This thesis deals with antiwar opposition during the Vietnam war. It contains interval between the 1950s and the year of 1968, from the movement for nuclear disarmament to the end of presidential tenure of Lyndon B. Johnson. The biggest stress lays upon interval between 1965 and 1968, thus the conflict itself. Thesis examines the roots and main representatives of antiwar movement, whether they were individuals or organisations. Furthermore it briefly summarizes situation in Southeast Asia and follows subsequent growing of american military presence. In the next part it describes escalation of the war and simultaneous emergence of antiwar movement. In the part of 1965 till 1967 it observes not only the development, spread and establishment as social current of the movement, but also inner and outer conflicts and its interconnection with civil rights movement. It examines the methods, which were used by the movement and also its relationship tomajor society. In the last section it draws attention to the year of 1968, which profoundly changed the perception of the Vietnam war. In addition, it analyzes the impacts of august Democratic convetion in Chicago on the antiwar dissent. In the end it draws the perspective after 1968.

Reflection of the referendum and change of the constitution in Belarus 2004 in the Czech press

The bachelor thesis deals with the referendum and constitutional change in Belarus in 2004 and the response of these events in the Czech press. The first part is theoretical, trying to define the form of the current political regime of Lukashenka's Belarus. The second part chronologically charts the political development in the country. This chapter covers the period shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union, the events of the nineties and the turn of the century followed by the discussed referendum and constitutional change. The third part provides an analysis of the Czech press - selected newspapers, socio-political magazines and professional journals - with an emphasis on their response to the referendum and related events.

The Protest Movement of 1968 in Great Britain

This Bachelor thesis deals with the protest movement of 1968 in Great Britain while analysing its basis, particular examples and eventually its interpretation. The text is divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, attention is given to the socio-political context of the protests, in particular to the transformation of the society occuring in the 1960s, the policy of the Labour Party, British New Left and the peace movement of the 1950s and 1960s. The second chapter reports on three anti-Vietnam war marches in London. The circumstances of the marches are mentioned here as well as leading persons who initiated them. The marches are examined separately, the third and biggest one most in detail. In the third chapter, the examples of student protests at British universities and colleges are described with special emphasis on their causes. Eventually, in the fourth chapter, the protest movement is interpreted, i.e. the arguments of critics are outlined, concidering protests reasonless and existing only due to the action of radical groups. The validity of this opinions is proved using particular examples of protests.

Justice and Development Party (AKP) and its influence on Turkey

The aim of the bachelor thesis is to look how much is President Erdogan and his JDP influencing Turkey and its citizens. The first part of the thesis will describe elections since 2002 until the last ones which took place this year in November. Next part deals with protests, who was protesting and why and how it affected Justice and Development Party in upcoming years. The next chapter will focus on the relationship between Turkey and the European Union from the start and from the moment when JDP came to power. The last chapter is dealing with the political vision of JDP for next years. What are its goals and what it plans to change.
