Therapy of epilepsy in dogs and cats
Šenková, Monika ; Vokřál, Ivan (advisor) ; Lecová, Lenka (referee)
Charles University Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology Student: Monika Šenková Supervisor: PharmDr. Ivan Vokřál, Ph.D. Title of diploma thesis: Therapy of epilepsy in dogs and cats Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder affecting dogs and cats. This chronic disorder is manifested by recurrent epileptic seizures. The true prevalence of epilepsy in dogs and cats is unknown. It is estimated to be 0,6-0,75 % in general dog population, and 1-2 % in hospitalized dog population. There is no known estimate for general cat population, but it is estimated to be 0,5-3,5 % in hospitalized cat population. Genetic predisposition has been proved in several dog breeds, and in some breeds, it is assumed. Diagnostics of epilepsy could be often difficult, and it reflects only the symptoms described by the pet owner, therefore the close cooperation between the pet owner and the veterinarian is needed. The aims of the treatment are to decrease seizure frequency, duration, severity, and the total number of epileptic seizures that occurs with none or at least minimal adverse effects, to maximize the dog's and owner's quality of life. Currently, there is no guideline for choice of treatment and a final decision should be made on a case-by-case basis. Monotherapy is preferred...
Protists in oral cavity of humans and animals.
Brixí, Kateřina ; Tachezy, Jan (advisor) ; Rada, Petr (referee)
Trichomonas tenax, Trichomonas gallinae, Trichomonas gypaetinii, Trichomonas stableri, Trichomonas equibuccalis, Trichomonas brixi, Tetratrichomonas canistomae, Tetratrichomonas felistomae and Tetratrichomonas empyemagena are unicellular eukaryotes (protists) that may occur in oral cavity of humans and domestic animals. These protozoans are mostly referred as commensals and relatively low attention is paid to them, since they usually are not primary cause of serious health problems. However, based on current knowledge, it can be concluded that more appropriate term for Entamoeba gingivalis and Trichomonas tenax would be an opportunistic pathogen, while Trichomonas gallinae is a primary pathogen. There are very little studies and findings about the rest of oral protozoans and their pathogenicity, therefore it is not possible to assess their significance for a host. Nevertheless, the oral protozoans should not be neglected, as in some cases they can cause serious health complications in their host.
Determination of the risk elements and other elements concentration in animal feed
Křehlíková, Jana ; Juglová, Zuzana (referee) ; Diviš, Pavel (advisor)
This thesis deals with the determination of selected microelements and macroelements and risk elements in dog and cat food. The theoretical part describes the nutrition of dogs and cats and focuses on the safety of the food in the context of contamination with risk elements. Another topic discussed is the chemical analysis of feeds, specifically the determination of nutritionally important substances, beneficial elements, and contaminants. The experimental part deals with the preparation and digestion of feed samples and the subsequent analysis of these samples using ICP-OES and AAS methods. The detected concentrations of the elements of interest in the feeds were compared with the feed standards issued by the Department of Veterinary Medicine and the decree issued by the Ministry of Agriculture. The analysed feeds were found to be deficient in some elements. The content of the risk elements in the feed met the legal limits and did not pose a health risk to the animal. Elements for which the legislation does not provide a maximum permissible limit were present in the feed-in in high concentrations that could already harm the animal's health.
AJAX CAT - web-based editor backed by machine translation
Odcházel, Ondřej ; Bojar, Ondřej (advisor) ; Mareček, David (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to implement a system translation support. The system consists of server and client side. Server side uses machine translation system for generating translation aids. The first kind of aid is a table with a various translation options for each part of text input. Another kind of aids are translation suggestions. These suggestions in each moment of translation represents the most probable way of continuation of translation. The client side of the system is web-based application controlled by translator. Client side serves translation helps from server side to the translator. In addition, the client side also provides simple content management system for translation documents.
Civil initiative in the field of animal reproduction
Odvárková, Adéla ; Frič, Pavol (advisor) ; Císař, Ondřej (referee)
This Diploma Thesis focuses on the issue of reproduction of animals and the non- profit organisations and subjects working in this field. The cat and dog reproduction is a primary cause of their overpopulation in the Czech Republic which becomes an ever- increasing issue as the abandoned animal shelter network fails to provide enough capacity for local demand. The thesis is focused on the activities of such organisations and tools they use for mobilising the necessary resources as well as the issue of animal reproduction itself. The theory basis is in the general theory of resource mobilisation supported with the explanation of the civil initiatives dedicated to this phenomenon as well as the overview of the phenomenon of the animal reproduction as well. The thesis is composed of five qualitative interviews with organisations or movements that are dedicated to effective reduction of animal reproduction. The empiric part of the thesis presents selected organisations and then analyses the collected data. The financial and human resources are mostly utilised by organisations which physically treat animals and the majority of the funds is consumed by providing care for them. On the other hand, organisations dedicated to enlightenment and education are able to function as self-funded and self-organised...
Comparison of values of blood images in animals - dog, cat
MAJOROVÁ, Petra
Blood count is one of the most important and most frequent haematological examinations. It is important for proper diagnosis and control of treatment effectiveness. Non-coagulated blood with the anticoagulant K3EDTA or K2EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid potassium salt) is used to examine the blood count. It is also important to maintain the correct ratio of anticoagulant and blood collected. Examination of blood counts is not related only to human patients, but also to many species of animals, most often dogs and cats. In order to evaluate the results correctly, it is necessary to know the reference limits of the respective species, possibly divided by sex, age or breed. The aim of this study is to evaluate differences in baseline blood counts (amount of erythrocyte, amount of hemoglobin, value of hematocrit, amount of leukocyte, amount of platelet) between samples obtained from dogs and from cats. A total of 500 samples (250 canine, 250 cat) was measured on a Sysmex XN 1000 analyzer in Synlab czech, s.r.o., Ceske Budejovice according to proper laboratory practice procedures. Animal patients are selected regardless of diagnosis, breed and sex. The measured results are evaluated by the parametric method, the correlation coefficient is always calculated. This correlation coefficient was close to 1 for all five monitored parameters. This means that the individual parameters of dogs and cats are comparable between species regardless of age. Results of dogs and cats in most cases exceed the values of reference limits given to a specific species of animal. It can be assumed that the reason for the high values is that samples of diseased animals were predominantly used.
