Nation in family and family in nation. The type of patriotic town family, example of Dr. Václav Staněk's family.

Diploma thesis deals with theme of family in Czech patriotic circles in the 19th century, example of family of Václav Staněk, Doctor of Medicine and patriot. Václav Staněk was a friend of Josef Frič and František Ladislav Čelakovský, their families were very close. While Fritč's and Čelakovský's families appear very often in different works about 19th century, Staněk's family was almost forgot. This thesis deals with public activities of the family, in the time before the revolution 1848 it's the Czech "salon" which was also one of the first platforms for women interested in education and during the revolution in 1848 - 1849 the engagement of Václav Staněk at parliament in Vienna and Kroměříž. Thorough attention is paid to the family connections among members of the family, especially to relationships between wife and husband and relationships among parents and children. The source is rich and yet not used correspondence of the family which allows insight to the political as well to the family business.

Leaving of Czechoslovak democracy giants; comparison of media images of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk and Václav Havel death and funeral in Czech Press

Diploma thesis "Leaving of Czechoslovak democracy giants; comparison of media images of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk's and Vaclav Havel's death and funeral in Czech Press" aims to compare the media images of the presidents' death and funeral in broadsheet and tabloid newspapers of that time. In this matter, media analyzed the lives of these great personalities, their work, political views, their acceptance and renown abroad, their merits and their critical reception as well. The study itself is divided into two main parts. The first one being the theoretical part informs about the political and social context of the time in which Tomas Garrigue Masaryk and Vaclav Havel lived and worked and it discusses their personalities in more details. Furthermore, the methodology used in the thesis is included in this section as well, representing and explaining the method of the media research. In the second practical part, the thesis provides the characteristics of the chosen broadsheet and tabloid newspapers - Lidove noviny, Poledni list and Blesk. By using qualitative analysis the thesis seeks to determine how media presented the presidents at that time. On one hand it attempts to illustrate the parallels that linked these two personalities, on the other hand it endeavours to describe how their images differed....

The Image of Jan Hus in the Early Modern Czech Literature

The work The Image of Jan Hus in the Early Modern Czech Literature tries to map different ways of description of this Czech preacher in selected literary texts from 15th to 18th century, to capture the changes which his image underwent. The chosen authors come from different countries and use different languages, represent different environments, social classes and opinion groups, they also have different education and religion. Individual literary works were assessedby means of comparing the key episodes that are either repeated in the texts, or the author intentionally did not use them. To understand the image of Jan Hus as a whole, also contemporary iconography was taken into account , which in some cases has been taken from other literary texts than those which were compared, so that the image of Hus whereas complete as possible. The comparison of the texts and iconography showed, how accurate the observation of the described scheme was and how the image of Jan Hus was gradually changing. The combination of written and iconographic material from specific time intervals allowed us to observe the gradual change of conceptions of the personality of Jan Hus and events connected with him, because the authors represent the opinion of their ethnic group and time. We hoped we will be better. The life of czech teacher in the second half of 19th century and the first third of 20th century

Because of the new Education Act (Hasner's reform), the second half of the nineteenth century was a very important time for education. I introduce a primary school teacher living at that time, his way to 'success' and whether the image, which surrounded him, corresponded to the reality. Using the Bourdieu's theory of capital, I investigate the individual aspects of the life of Vincenc Paulus (1840-1913), the school director in Chrast. He was the educator of the public, an amateur historian and archivist, an organizer of an ethnographic exhibition, a founder of a local museum, an active official of teachers' association Budeč chrudimská, and a member of municipal committee. Hence, it seems that he met the contemporary ideas about a publicly, and especially culturally active teacher and educator; who carries out all the work selflessly and enthusiastically, thinking only of the welfare of teachers, his pupils, local citizens, the municipality, the nation, the State and the Church. Convinced of the importance of his mission, he withstands any "slights" with patience and with belief in the future awards; and pays attention to avoid any unnecessary conflicts in order to protect his most important work - the education. The origins of catholic political thought in life work of V. S. Štulc

The subject of this paper is the public role of the Catholic priest in the Czech national society of the 19th century, when the Catholic Church lost its ideological and influential position and when it had to face the process of secularization. The situation of the Catholic Church had changed radically as it became only one of many different cultural or political entities in that century and had to find new means of how to influence opinions of the people. This essay discusses the life and work of Václav Štulc (1814 - 1887), a Czech Catholic priest and an enthusiastic patriot. It describes three fundamental tendencies in his political thought. The first tendency in his work is associated with his role of representative of the Catholic Church and with his emphasizing the importance of religious values for the common good of society. Štulc's conservatism is based on very sharp criticism of the Enlightenment, revolutionary violence and the enlightened rule of Emperor Joseph II. Štulc urges all social classes to respect the basic laws and to maintain public order. Secondly, Štulc often refers to the relationship of the religious and national identities. Prof. Rudolf Jedlička (1869-1926) and the medical and social institutions bound up with his activities

Rudolf Jedlička belongs to the most important Czech doctors of the beginning of the 20th century. After finishing his studies he engaged, under the influence of his favourite professor Karel Maydl, in surgery. Nevertheless he was very soon interested in X-ray science and radiology - the science branches, which were just newly being formed, and whose pioneer in the central Europe he became. Jedlička was often consulted as a diagnostic and operator thanks to his many-sided medical skills. He connected his life with the Faculty of Medicine of the Czech Charles-Ferdinand University, respectively Charles University, where he was engaged as an educationalist - creator of so called Jedlička school, which became bearer of his medical heritage. He reached the top of his career in 1921, when he was designated as regular professor of surgery and simultaneously head of the II. Clinic of Surgery. Rudolf Jedlička did not limit his activities only to medical theory and practice, but he was also initiator and organizer of many medical and social projects, the most important of which was the foundation of Prague sanatorium and neighbouring Jedlička foundation. Resumé v anglickém jazyce Summary This thesis is an attempt to show two authors and mainly two of their major works created in two different cultures, concluded by comparison of these two key works. Vladimír Neff, through his five-part cycle of novels Sňatky z rozumu (and following) dealing to the broad extent with the lives of members of Born and Nedobyl families, has proved his outstanding narrative skills which, together with a fair dose of irony and perfect knowledge of historical facts, make this pentalogy Neff's life work that in a remarkable manner made its way into the history of Czech literature. The author draws very accurate picture of Prague changing over a hundred of years and portrays the glamour of the age that is to be noted for the pursuit of economic and technological progress. Thanks to psychologically very thoroughly and accurately depicted key figures of the founders of abovementioned families, some of which were given the typically bourgeois features by Neff, the readers become close witnesses of their rise and fall. THE GENRE AND OPERATIONAL SPECIFICS OF A CABARET

The bachelor thesis characterises the specifics of the cabaret and describes various types of operating the cabaret. An emphasis is put on cabaret in conditions of the Czech Republic. History, evolution of the genre and the current situation is analysed. A special attention is paid to the Prague Cabaret Calembour where the author of the thesis performs.
The aim of the thesis is to provide a complex overview and to describe cabaret as a phenomenon that has played considerable role in history of a theatre. What more, the cabaret is alive and still brings a great potential.
