Blind spot

The goal of this dissertation is to adumbrate - with the help of few renowned philosophers - the limits of reflexive thinking and to show the fundamentally invisible. Herewith it partially ends up in area of certain non-Iogicalness This work primarily deals with a very important phenomenon, which brings us to the limit of (non)thinkable and (non)visible. It is the phenomenon of blind spot that enables to demonstrate the margin of phenomenology and reflexive thinking in one of its cleanest forms. We ask one important question: How to reflect and phenomenise blind spot? It is not a simple task. The result is the analysis of non-substitutable experience which cannot be replaced neither by any thesis nor by any objective proof. It is just openness to inner disputableness and inabi1ity to describe the experience. The conc1usion is not a proposition but an appeal to the actual readers. They should take a close look themselves and try to determine their blind spot. This work has tried to open the door for this phenomenon and also for another way of thinking which is not so typical of us, for the zen.
Mitsuko Coudenhove-Kalergi and the Origin of Pan-Europa

Cílem práce je rekonstruovat skutečný životní příběh Japonky Mitsuko Aoyama, provdané do šlechtické rodiny hraběte Heinricha Coudenhove-Kalergi se sídlem v českých Poběžovicích na přelomu 19. a 20. století, a zařadit jej do kontextu moderních kulturních dějin a vývoje mezinárodních vztahů, kde není plně ukotven. Historická část práce začíná od rekapitulace bádání o této Japonce od poloviny 70. let 20. století a končí literárně pojatou rekonstrukcí celého jejího životního příběhu. Mitsuko se odvážila jako jedna z prvních Japonek uzavřít sňatek v roce 1895 v Tokiu s cizincem a rakousko-uherským diplomatem hrabětem Heinrichem Coudenhove-Kalergi, v době po restauraci císařské moci Meidži (1868), kdy byla zrušena po více než dvou stech letech izolace Japonska od světa. Konvertovala z buddhismu na katolickou víru manžela a odjela s ním do Evropy, kde musela cele změnit svou osobní identitu. Rekonstrukce příběhu zahrnuje sociální zařazení rodiny Aoyama v soudobé japonské společnosti, s objasněním dobových okolností mezinárodních sňatků, jež plnily významnou roli v mezinárodní diplomacii a ve vývoji moderních dějin. Zahrnuje i výklad sociálně- historického zázemí rodiny Coudenhove-Kalergi, včetně jejich postavení v Čechách, se správou panství v okolí Domažlic. Jsou popsány i výrazné osobnosti a život sedmi...
Analysis of a cosmic egg motif in creation myths

The aim of this thesis is to compare similar cosmogonic narratives in Indian and Chinese culture. The most important elements are the motives of the egg and the giant/god who is formed from it. Comparative method consist of the comparison of the meanings and interpretations of the motives of these two elements, depending on the expectations and character of the source of this mythological narrative. Final findings are, that the importance of both motives in the texts and their participation in the process of creation of the world change chronologically, due to changes in religious, philosophical and social preferences. In Indian cultural environment in the begining, the vague motive of the egg slowly emerges and becomes a single creative element, gaining importance and continues to the stage where it reaches the same level of importance as the cosmic being. The primordial being on the other hand, loses its function of cosmic matter and passes it to the egg. The being itself then plays an active role rather than an object. China, for its religious scepticism suppressed motive of the egg until it was completely removed from texts. The primary role is played by the cosmic giant whose role is not focused on the creation of the world itself but the desintegration of the giants body, representing fission...
Eugene Onegin in Czech translations

The paper covers five complete Czech translations of Pushkin's Eugene Onegin by Václav Čeněk Bendl, Václav Alois Jung, Josef Hora, Olga Mašková and Milan Dvořák. Translation quality assessment is based on the question of how each rendering reflects semantic complexities of the original. Analysis of each translation involves the significant phonetic, imaginative, ideational and structural features of Pushkin's novel in verse. Often a particular rendering is contrasted with another one to demonstrate its style more clearly, including some of the incomplete renderings of Onegin, especially that by Jan Evangelista Purkyně. All the translations analysed are put into their historical context. It follows that most of them were created at some crucial point in the Czech history (1860, 1937 and 1966) and in some way reflect "the spirit of their time". Bendl changed the structure of the original by a shift in metre. He replaced iambic tetrameter by iambic pentameter. As a result, he was given more room to develop the thoughts and imagery of Pushkin's novel in verse. However, he often turned his translation into renarration and contaminated his rendering with a great deal of semantic shifts. ...

Diplomová práce, Bc. Jan Komárek Abstract This thesis is a comparison of two literary works: on the one hand, nearly forgotten anonymous novel Jin, Yun Qiao Story (金雲翹傳), which was written in China at the turn of XVII and XVIII century, and, on the other hand, of a famous novel in verse called The Tale of Kiều (Truyện Kiều), composed a century later by a Vietnamese poet Nguyễn Du on the basis of the aforenamed work. The primary aim of this thesis is to point to the literary elements by means of which Nguyễn Du enriched his work in comparison to the original, and thus offer an explanation of why each of these works met such a different fate. For illustration, translations of the first chapter of the Chinese novel and of a corresponding part of the Vietnamese poem are presented. The two works are then set in the literary context of their time and Nguyễn Du's relationship to the Chinese novel is assessed on the basis of his other works and related contemporary sources. Subsequently, there is a brief outline of history of the comparison between the two works by Vietnamese and by some foreign scholars. This thesis is focusing on Hakuin Ekaku and his Chat on the Evening boat seen in the frame of medical discourse in the Tokugawa period. Key points are seen in mutual and multilevel interaction among Japanese surrounding and so called Dutch studies (rangaku) and Sino-Japanese medicine. Hakuin Ekaku has not been ,as far as we know, situated into the Tokugawa medicinal history discourse. Mostly he is discussed separately either within individual frameworks of Edo-buddhism rinzai sect revival or within frameworks shaped by his healing methods which are described mainly in his works Yasen kanna and Oradegama. Our question is how much, if ever, Hakuin was involved in scientific changes of his period and to what degree he was aware and familiar with undergoing shifts of medical paradigmats. Based on descriptive analysis of Tokugawa shogunate medical background which unifies western and eastern medical knowledge together with absorbing vital changes undergoing in social and cultural history itself we are discussing Yasen kanna as a part of shifted narrative paradigma, concluding in attempt of Hakuin's role re-definition as a unifying force of various voices coming from different sources with a one goal - personal happiness and health.
Methods of srgumentation in the Four-seven debate

The thesis deals with the analysis of processes and techniques of argumentation in the formation of propositions within the discourse of the Korean school of daoxue from 16th to 18th century, based on the collection of texts of the Four- Seven Debate and its later commentary in the Nongny chapsik. The given texts are introduced in the form of an analysis of the traditional technique of using diagrams and images in daoxue texts and their relevance in the process of formation of the Debate and themes associated with it. The main focus is then shifted to the use and manner of referencing classical authors and quotations from earlier literary pieces of Confucianism, the use of ad hominem argument and the definition of the concept of orthodox interpretation, as well as the use of metaphorical expressions as means of argumentation. The universal applicability of these techniques within the discourse of the Korean daoxue is demonstrated in 226 the example of the later commentary of the source texts, Nongny chapsik. The aim of the thesis is to show that these processes and techniques make it possible to connect the collection of the texts of the Debate with their theoretical background, and thus evaluate its significance in the subsequent development of basic paradigms in Korean Confucianism.
