The main goal of this bachelor's thesis is to translate the third chapter from the book 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos by Jordan B. Peterson into Czech. The second part consists of a commentary of this translation. The first part of the commentary is a translation analysis of the intratextual and extratextual factors of the source text. The second part is the description of the principal translation problems and their solution that are in selected cases accompanied by a comparison with a published translation of the source text. The third part contains shifts that occurred in the translation and finally, the fourth part presents the translation method.

Eugene A. Nida and his contribution to Translation Studies

This theoretic-historiographical thesis examines the life and work of the linguist and translation theorist Eugene A. Nida (1914-2011). It analyses his theoretical and methodological underpinnings, most important publications and theories and evalues his contribution to translation studies. Nida is presented in his role of theoretician, methodologician and organiser, whose theory of formal and dynamic (or functional) equivalence contributed to the development of Bible translation and translation theory in general. The thesis includes comprehensive bibliography of E. Nida.

The objective of this thesis is to translate an online article called How one of the most obese countries on earth took on the soda giants, published in The Guardian, from Czech to English. The article, written by the US journalist Tina Rosenberg in November 2015, informs about the role soda plays in Mexico and attempts to trace the political and cultural circumstances that led to the current situation in the country. The second part of this thesis contains a commentary comprising the analysis of the text, description of the method of translation and the analysis and typology of translation problems, translation procedures and translation shifts that occurred during the process. Prosodic characteristics of Czech film dubbing

The aim of the thesis was to design an analytical model enabling a comparative analysis of both original and dubbed versions of film dialogues, with special regard to prosodic interference (intonation in particular), to describe and explain such interference, caused by certain differences between Czech and English, and to assess its influence on communication, considering the nature of a film character and its reception by Czech recipients. The analysis showed that higher pitch register and extended intonation range were the most common types of interference, bringing about the impression of over-emotive and over-melodious speech and also changing some of the film characters. These types of interference were caused by a different way of using intonation within the system of a language; English uses intonation to signal information structure and to express emotions as well. Interesting results were obtained when a structural approach to a character, as proposed by Jiří Levý (1971), was applied in the analysis. Surprisingly, another type of interference was discovered; it is a sort "indirect" interference developed in cases when the dubbed version closely follows the original and its dominant prosodic features and uses them in situations where the original does not.
