"After the Future Went Away"- The Dystopianism and Current Trends in Modern Speculative British Fiction
Šedivá, Barbora ; Clark, Colin Steele (advisor) ; Veselá, Pavla (referee)
The objective of the present study is to identify and analyse the common themes of dystopian fiction in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, and to trace the transformation of these themes, as well as the development of new thematic realizations, in contemporary British speculative fiction. The analysis involves prominent recent authors including Iain Banks, Ken MacLeod, Adam Roberts, Charles Stross, and Chris Beckett; and through the selected works of these authors it aims to explore the recent trends in science fiction and its utopian subgenres. Besides these goals, the study aims to provide the reader with a thorough definition of dystopianism and a concise overview of the historical development of this genre and its manifestations in the works of the above-mentioned authors. As the most prominent and recurring themes in dystopian literature, both traditional and contemporary, the thesis recognizes concepts such as the manipulation through language and media, the loss of individual freedom and privacy, and the abuse of power by elites, all of which are of special importance for the present-day social thinking and politics. Structurally, the study is divided into three chapters, the first of them assuming the role of theoretical introduction, whereas the...

The thesis is based on the assumption that history education takes a signifiant part in making of one's identity. The first part of this thesis describes the theoretical resources, the second the specific conclusions and examples of analysis of the historical sources. Special attention is payed to the theory of czechoslovakism, its historical evolution and its echo in historiography. The topics of the analytic part are husittism, national revival and formation of Czechoslovakia.
Archives and documentation of performance art: at the intersection between history and myth.
Písaříková, Jana ; Šedivá, Barbora (referee) ; Havlík, Vladimír (referee) ; Horáková, Jana (referee) ; Ruller, Tomáš (advisor)
The PhD thesis deals with the role of archives in the contemporary artistic and curatorial practice, with an emphasis on the performance art. It also analyses the creation process, methodology and the contents of selected personal and institutional archives in both Czech and international contexts. The objective of the paper is to answer the following questions: In what way is the documentation and subsequent archiving of process-oriented forms of art performed? How is the history of the contemporary art formed and interpreted through these archives and with the help of the artistic and curatorial practice? To what extent are we able to reconstruct the history from records and performance documents that are only fragmented, thus making a reference to a real action? Do the archives leave some room for misinterpretation, creating a myth or personality cult through its system of classification of knowledge? How indeed is the performance art related to its own history; how is this history perceived by the performer alone; and how is it approached by the professional audience? The paper will also include the analysis of current state and possible solutions to the operation of the archive of the Faculty of Fine Arts, which is related to opening a dialogue among artists, theorists and institutions that might be interested in better accessibility of such an archive.

The apparent switch of the stated topic and name of the thesis from Art History to the actual name of the video Inside and Outside the Window became specifically meaningfull to me in that it reflects my own search for understanding, meaning and finding my own place in life and society. The term art history becomes one of many symbols of understanding and learning about a certain topic and it's value system. History of Art and it's evolution is first presented as a unified story, to be learned and accepted on face value as the only truth. But at a certain point it begins to unravel and fall apart and one is forced to doubt exactly those learned and accepted values. What was once accepted as observed or directly experienced is suddenly questioned not only through historical revaluation, but also personal introspection, rejection of absorbed values and a search for new and inherent personal values. But I myself am becoming a part of history and I am no longer the observer, but become the observed and I begin to realise that the newly discovered values are just a revised version of the old and learned ones.
