Mészárosová, Marianna ; Uherek, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Botiková, Marta (referee) ; Červinková, Hana (referee)
The interrelation between space and culture represents the central question of this doctoral thesis. To interpret this relationship the author approaches the issue by virtue of actual identity attributes of the selected ethnic groups, namely Slovak and Hungarian minorities living in Prague. The aim of the work is to define the relevance and unique representation of the spatial and cultural phenomenon in the context of existing relations, including determining the extent of observability this mutual connection. The hypothesis of this doctoral is to present culture as a spatially unbounded, and the phenomenon of space as a medium, which can influence the intensity of interest in relation to the own ethno-identifying components. The verification of this assumption author carries out within social and virtual space, on the basis of registered discourses. Discourses, sorted into thematic categories, represent the most common attributes of ethnicity and ethnic identity of the given target groups. The empirical part of this thesis contains the analysis and interpretation of the discourses, which are supported with the theory of articulation. More comprehensive definitions of applied theoretical approaches, together with terminology, research methods and ethics or netiquette, are situated in the...

Representation, process, experience: (post)industrial landscape in anthropological-geographical perspective
Gibas, Petr ; Uherek, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Siwek, Tadeusz (referee) ; Szaló, Csaba (referee)
Representation, process, experience: (post)industrial landscape in anthropological-geographical perspective Abstract The main topic of the dissertation is the (post)industrial landscape of what is today the Czech Republic. In particular, the dissertation presents three case studies of three (post)industrial landscapes: that of Ostrava, Kladno and Most. The aim of the dissertation is twofold - thematic as well as theoretical. As far as the thematic focus of the dissertation goes, the author employs the concept of landscape as a prism through which it is possible to explore large societal shifts and changes as they are mirrored in landscape. The question is what has happened to industrial landscape after the fall of socialism and how industrial landscape has turned into what it is now. On the theoretical level, the (post)industrial landscape of contemporary Czechia is used as a means of exploring the complexity of the concept of landscape and developing a conceptualization of landscape that comes to terms with its complexity, ambiguity and elusiveness. In terms of theory, the dissertation engages with three ways of conceptualising landscape prevalent in contemporary anthropology and (new cultural) geography: landscape as representation, process and experience. To explore them in depth and reveal any...
The History and Presence of the Affirmative Action in the USA, in The Czech Republic and other Countries
Štědroň, Jakub ; Uherek, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Brouček, Stanislav (referee) ; Sulitka, Andrej (referee)
The term affirmative action (U. S. English), or positive discrimination (British English) means positive steps taken to increase the representation of women and minorities in areas of employment, education, politics and business from which they had been historically excluded. In search for the roots of affirmative action I start at the very beginning of the US history describing institutionalized forms of slavery and later move on to segregation to demonstrate how deep and strong this exclusion was. Since the late 1960s this expression has been used to refer to policies that go beyond the simple prohibition of discrimination on grounds of race, national origin and sex in employment practices and educational system. These policies require further actions, affirmative actions, to make jobs and promotions and admissions to educational programs available to individuals from groups that have historically suffered from discrimination in gaining these opportunities or are, whether discriminated against or not by formal policies and informal practices, infrequently found in certain occupations or educational institutions and programs. In an effort to create an unprejudiced picture of this phenomenon of American modern society, I try to open my work for arguments of both sides, the proponents and the...

Drs, Tomáš ; Šatava, Leoš (advisor) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee) ; Pavlásek, Michal (referee)
Current Cultural Situation of Transylvanian Saxons in Romania PhDr. Tomáš Drs Abstract The thesis deals with the current situation of the Transylvanian Saxons in Romania. Based on multiple field visits, it describes and analyzes the problems related to reconstructing the ethnic identity of the community, noting the minority's transnational situation and exploring the generational relations, the minority's position in the ethnically different environment or its political and revitalization activities. The thesis also attemps to reconstruct the actual historical development, looks into how memory is socially conditioned memory and lays out biographies of individual characters. Methodologically, the thesis draws upon the tradition of ethnographic research, working with theoretical concepts of ethnicity (Eriksen, Anderson), transnationalism (Werbner, Szaló) or memory studies (Halbwachs, Assmann, Nora). The aim of the thesis is to introduce the Transylvanian Saxons and other groups commonly referred to as Romanian Germans in the Czech environment. It lays out the history of Transylvanian Saxons, describes their negotiations with the state and the framing of their minority identity. Also, it seeks to answer whether the end of the numerically smaller ethnic minority of Transylvanian Saxons is inevitable and how...
Identity of present-day Lusatian Sorbs illustrated by the example of the traditional Easter rides.
Hoření, Vendula ; Uherek, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Lupták Burzová, Petra (referee)
This work takes interest in the present-day indigenous minority of Sorbs and their life in a mainly German-speaking environment. All of the field research was done in 2014 and 2016 during the important festival and celebration The Easter ride of Crusaders in the Catholic part of Upper Lusatia, which is a sign of the community and religious communal strength. The Sorbs are the rural population, which has never demanded it's rights in a violent way. On the contrary, their traditional weapons throughout history were their conservative mentality, passiveness and isolation. The Sorbs have a double identity, they are bilingual and they can change the language they are speaking in an instant. The church was historically the only place where Sorbian was strictly the only language used. In fact, outside of the family German was the dominant language at all other institutions. The main differences that the Sorbs noticed between themselves and their German neighbors was a different language, being Catholic instead of Protestant, maintaining their own traditions, which the Sorbs believe can be a source of fear in the majority of the unknown. In the interviews, all of the problems that the Sorbs had with the majority Germanic people were mentioned in past tense. Compared to the post war generation, they now do not have...
Two forms of contemporary pro-Romani movement
Pfann, Martin ; Kubaník, Pavel (advisor) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee)
Key words: Roma, pro-romani movement, emancipation, collective identity, Roma Pride, International Romani Day, Ara Art, Konexe Abstract This paper presents on an example of two organizations and events organized by them a contemporary pro-romani movement in the Czech Republic - their topics and their strategies of agency to achieving their aims. The introductory part deals with the historical development of the pro-romani movement and in the second part, the author describes in detail the activities of two organizations Ara Art and Konexe. The final part presents by the using of a categorical analysis of their members forms in which these organizations on their events (International Romani day and Roma Pride) constitute a Roma collective identity. Both events have a two-way character, which is based on the relationship of the category "we" (the Roma) with the dominant category "they" (the majority society). With this relationship, the organizers deal on these events by a strengthening of collective belonging and at the same time negations of stereotypes about Roma created by the majority. Their primary purpose is therefore a destigmatisation their own identity.

Doubek, David ; Kučera, Miloš (advisor) ; Uherek, Zdeněk (referee) ; Chrz, Vladimír (referee)
This thesis is devoted to the problem of exclusion that Roma population is subject of in Czech republic. This exclusion is studied through "helping professions" - professional intervening actors that help Roma to overcome the exclusion. Results used in this text come from two ethnographic research projects realized between 2008-2013. The text contains mixed approach, inductive ethnographic, stemming from my extensive research data and deductive or theory-driven. Methodologically the research belongs to the broad area of qualitative approach to social research, especially cognitive anthropological, psychoanalytical and that of individual psychology. First theoretical part, using mainly concepts of cognitive anthropology and distibutive theory of culture is focused on the theoretical question of the concept of culture and how it can be used for the "Roma culture" concept in relationship with the question of "majority". The second part consists mainly of a reinterpretation of the question of exclusion and Roma culture from the point of view of the concept of distantiation and expands it into Frantz Fanon inspired theory of confrontation. Third part is predominatly empirical and ethnograpical and consists of an inquiry into cognitive models of the help from exclusion as observed in helping professions....
