The Impact of September 11 on US Foreign Policy
Kurash, Roman ; Raška, Francis (advisor) ; Hornát, Jan (referee)
The September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States of America had a significant impact on US foreign policy and security standards worldwide. Before the attacks, President Bush paid little attention to foreign policy, even in his election campaign and public speeches. After the attacks, foreign policy, and the war on terror as part of it, became a major concern of the Bush administration. The production of weapons of mass destruction by non-democratic regimes in the Middle East and their links to terrorist activities were identified as a major threat to the security of the United States. The democratisation of the Middle East and the peace in the region became the priorities of the US global policy. This paper is qualitative historical research and it examines the changes in US foreign policy after the attacks. It describes the differences and similarities in US foreign policy in periods before and after the attacks, the use of force against Afghanistan and Iraq, and cooperation between the USA and international organizations, such as NATO and the United Nations, on countering the terrorist threat. The subject of the study is the transformation of foreign policy of the USA in the period from 2001 to 2003, which was crucial for framing the relations between the USA and the rest of the world for...
The Changes in German Foreign Policy after the Russian Invasion of Ukraine
Čepelková, Kristýna ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Jeřábek, Martin (referee)
This bachelor's thesis looks into the topic of German foreign policy. The most important question, which this thesis tries to solve, is Which reasons make Germany change their foreign policy? Through the analysis of reasons which led the Federal Republiclic to take part in (by international law unlawful) Operation Allied Force, by which Berlin changed its foreign policy, I try to find out which reasons played a role in deciding whether to help Ukraine in its fight against Russia. FRG did not send weapons and military equipment to conflict zones which is why deciding to help Ukraine again changed German foreign policy. My analysis shows three main groups of reasons that are crucial for German foreign policy. These are normative reasons - "never again" (nie wieder) and "never alone" (nie wieder allein). Then the commitment to international and European institutions is another reason, and lastly their own interests. When deciding whether to join the world in the help for Ukraine, two normative concepts stemming from the complicated German past were at play. Berlin wants to "never again" (nie wieder) lead a war or cause another Auschwitz and it wants to act "never alone" (nie wieder allein). Moreover, the change in German foreign policy was also caused by the commitment of the Federal Republic to...
Shaping the Europeanization in Diplomacy: Development of the Czech "Dissident Tradition" in European-Related ideas
Yang, Zihan ; Matějka, Ondřej (advisor) ; Handl, Vladimír (referee)
This master's thesis examines the evolution of dissident European-related thoughts and the relationship between these thoughts and the practice of Czech Europeanization, especially in the field of foreign policy. The goal of the thesis is to analyze whether these developing ideas served as a theoretical basis for later European-related foreign political practices, both in terms of the activities of dissident politicians and in terms of the continuation of its diplomatic paradigms and ideologies on a larger period. Therefore, this thesis takes a Reflectivism stance by examining the development of European-related ideas of three selected Czech dissidents (Václav Havel, Jiří Dienstbier and Petr Pithart) in chronological order. It then analyzes how these ideas have changed in the political practices and reflections of the dissidents after 1989. The three selected dissidents are famous figures both in the political sphere and among dissidents, and their literature significantly contributed to this topic, which made their views become representative within the scope of this research topic. The thesis concludes that the dissidents' European discourse had deep historical and philosophical roots. This background, combined with the influence of geopolitical events during the Cold War (such as the Helsinki...
The Influence of the European Union on Non-Member States of Europe
LINHART, Tomáš
The thesis entitled "The Influence of the European Union on Non-Member States of Europe" deals with the mutual relations of this institution with selected non-member states of Europe, more precisely the Republic of Serbia, the Kingdom of Norway and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The text defines the European Union's foreign policies and identifies its political-legal dynamics and interconnections with its preferred European states. The thesis aims to establish the economic-economic and environmental relations between the players. Another ambition of the thesis is to list the current bilateral relations, foreign, security and defence policies and to describe the mutual influence of the legislative framework in the respective areas. The thesis introduces the EU cooperation with non-member states, or rather describes the existing ties in many areas, and presents the circumstances of the rejection of the Kingdom of Norway's membership in this structure, the rationale of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland's withdrawal and abandonment from the multi-year membership, and on the contrary, the interests of the Republic of Serbia to become an equal member and partner of the European Union, following the example of other member states. In addition to the necessary historical insight into the integration development of the European Union, an essential part of the thesis is the justification of the continued or newly created non-membership of selected European states in the EU. However, there are numerous collaborations between the community and individual states, and it is these collaborations that the thesis text focuses on. The thesis assesses not only the relations and the reasons and benefits of being or not being a member of the European Union but is a comprehensive text for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, the Common Security and Defence Policy, Foreign Policy and the European Neighbourhood Policy.
