Peter Pan's Film Adaptations and Their Didactic Use

The diploma thesis deals with three film adaptations of J. M. Barrie's famous novel Peter and Wendy (1911), better known under its later shortened title Peter Pan. It first focuses on a brief biography of the author, then summarizes the individual film adaptations and the novel's position in the Czech context - it presents all Czech translations with regard to their relationship to the original text and covers reception, including translations into other art forms. The main part then analyses three films: Hook (1991), Wendy (2020) and Peter Pan and Wendy (2023), in regard to making thematic comparisons with the source text. The final part is devoted to specific didactic suggestions for the three films mentioned above, as well as to working with the novel itself.

Media Response to Erben's Unfading Bouquet

The thesis deals with a comparison and compilation of the media response to the various versions of Karel Jaromír Erben's The Bouquet. The subject of comparison is the multiple reviews, starting with those published in the press immediately after the first historical publication of the poetry collection, followed by the reaction to the theatrical production at the Semafor theatre in 1972, to the reactions to the more modern adaptation in 2009. The theatrical production at the National Theatre, which premiered in 2019, was chosen for a further appropriate comparison. The thesis also focuses on film production, specifically Bouquet, directed by F. A. Brabec from 2000. The aim of the thesis is to answer the question of how the different versions of Erben's Bouquet differ, and what causes the significant differences. Another question is why artists feel the need to return to the work and reinterpret the story according to them. The thesis is a critical-historical analysis, bringing a media perspective, but also a cultural-political one, with a focus on the personal dimension.

Třiatřicet stříbrných křepelek. Comparison of the prose by Jan Trefulka and the movie by Antonín Kachlík

The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to analyse the novel Třiatřicet stříbrných křepelek from 1963 by prosaic Jan Trefulka and compares it with the identically named film by director Antonín Kachlík. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with the definition of terms from the field of narratology, especially from the category of the scope of the story, narrator, characters, events and space. Attention is paid to depicting the everyday life of the 1960s in the Czechoslovak culture, everyday life will allow to convey the political backround of the selected piece of art. The thesis aims to find out how the work changes when transferred from one medium to another, in this case from a book template to its film adaptation.

A Comparison of Mario Puzo's The Godfather with the Film Adaptations

The student undertook an analysis of the varied aspects linked with The Godfather regarding plot, character presentation and dialogue, as well as aspects of the narrative less conducive to direct representation in the film productions. Then the student compared the three film adaptations with Puzo's text, comparing and contrasting the original novel with the three adaptations, referring to, among other aspects, how changes were adapted to issues pertaining to a cinematic audience and further developed by the renowned director and actors. The general consensus is that The Godfather I and The Godfather II, both winning academy awards, were vastly superior to The Godfather III. This comparison re-evaluates that perception.

Diploma thesis Closely Watched Trains: from the short story Kain to the short story, from short story to Oscar film and theatrical adaptations maps the path of Bohumil Hrabal's existential short story Kain, through the short story Closely Watched Trains, an Oscar film of the same name to theatrical adaptations that were dramatized by different people. The work also includes media response and comparison of the similarity of books, films and productions. The first part deals with the theoretical definition of literary genres, namely short stories and short stories. Review and criticism from the journalistic genres are theoretically described. The film and theater adaptation is defined and the dramatic structure of the film work is described. The second part presents the life and work of the writer Bohumil Hrabal and examines in more detail his distinctive writing style. The next sections are always devoted to the specific medium that the text carries. First, the text of the existential short story Kain is analyzed, followed by the short story Closely Watched Trains, including media coverage in the periodical press, followed by the Oscar-winning film Closely Watched Trains, which includes a biography of director Jiří Menzel and a chapter devoted to the Oscars. Kurt Vonnegut and His Humor in Three Literary Works and Their Cinematic Adaptations

This bachelor thesis compares three different cinematic adaptations of three novels by an American writer Kurt Vonnegut and focuses on the way they translate the humor of the three novels. The novels discussed are Mother Night (1962), Slaughterhouse Five (1969), and Breakfast of Champions (1973). The cinematic adaptations analyzed in this thesis are Slaughterhouse Five (1972) directed by George Roy Hill and based on a screenplay written by Stephen Geller, Mother Night (1996) directed by Keith Gordon and based on a screenplay written by Robert B. Weide and finally Breakfast of Champions (1999) directed by Alan Rudolph who also wrote the screenplay. The analysis as such is divided into four chapters. Chapter 2 introduces Kurt Vonnegut as an author as well as a person. Several key theories about humor are presented, mainly those articulated by Paul Lewis, Daniel Wickberg and Sarah Blacher Cohen. The phenomenon of cinematic adaptation is introduced in the same section and the theoretical background provided is based on works by Timothy Corrigan, Brian McFarlane and Seymour Chatman. This bachelor thesis deals with the last novel by Dostoyevsky The Brothers Karamazov and the film based on the book directed by a screenwriter Petr Zelenka. The first part of this thesis deals with a comprehensive analysis of Dostoevsky's novel The Brothers Karamazov in terms of literary theory and history, the second part focuses on the issues of the film adaptation based on the novel The Brothers Karamazov, directed by Petr Zelenka. The aim of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive and integrated analysis of the novel The Brothers Karamazov. This thesis investigates, if ideas of Dostoevsky's works are currently up to date. Above all, this work deals with comparison of literary and film adaptations, focusing primarily on formal and semantic differences of these entities. The thesis, called Czech films based on well-known criminal cases: from reality, newspaper news to feature film and film reviews. Murder in Polná - Case of Leopold Hilsner, deals with a criminal case which took place at the break of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. A young girl, Anežka Hrůzová, was murdered in the Březina woods outside the town of Polná. At a time when anti-Semitic sentiments dominated the society, a Polná resident and a Jew, Leopold Hilsner, was accused as the perpetrator of the crime. He was later convicted of this crime, and another one of a similar nature, even though there was no relevant evidence or testimonies. The period news outlets played a significant role in spreading the anti-Semitic tendencies. This thesis describes the course of this real-life case and focuses on the methods the media used to inform about it. Director Viktor Polesný made a film on the issue, Zločin v Polné (Murder in Polná), which is analysed in the thesis, along with the reviews written about this film, including the reception by viewers. From Scribe to Ministerial Counsellor: The Involvement of Jiří Mařánek in the Cinematography of the Forties and Fifties

1 Abstract The thesis focuses on the involvement of Jiří Mařánek in the management of the Film Department of the Ministry of Information during the years 1945 - 1948. His ministe- rial engagement is related to the contemporary strengthening of the importance of literary preparation of the film and to the associated state dramaturgical supervision. Jiří Mařánek belongs to the circle of writers connected on one hand through their affiliation with the interwar avant-garde movements, on the other hand by their postwar involve- ment in the power apparatus that ended by the political and economic changes in the late forties and fifties. His professional fate speaks about the changes of cultural policy of the state, about the institutional development of the cinema and about the relations between literary and cinematic arts. It is a testimonial of what a successful professional career meant for a man of letters and what relationship it had to the cinema. We follow therefore a relatively brief but breakthrough episode of a writer and retired officer in the position of the Ministerial Counsellor, and we try to place its course and causes into a complex network of historical and social contexts and personal motivation.
