Great Britain and the Common Security and Defence Policy of the EU: A neofunctionalist and liberal intergovernmentalist approach
Pfeifer, Tomáš ; Karlas, Jan (advisor) ; Grünvaldová, Tereza (referee)
Velká Británie a společná bezpečnostní a obranná politika EU: Neofunkcionalistický a liberálně mezivládní přístup Abstract Tomáš Pfeifer In December 1998, a significant conference of British and French government officials assembled in the town of St. Malo in France. Their diplomatic efforts resulted in a joint declaration which is commonly regarded as the beginning of the current phase of European cooperation in the field of security and defence policy. In a few months' time, the fundamental architecture of the future European security and defence policy was plotted out, and shortly afterwards, Javier Solana was presented as its new head. It was an remarkable detour from the decades-long period of Cold War stagnation during which European cooperation was carried out mostly by the Western European Union and other more or less formal institutions. This work analyses the problem of joint European security from the viewpoint of the United Kingdom, which is not only one of the ESDP inititators, but also a dominant European military player with a rich and complex foreign policy history and, consequently, a finely structured system of needs and preferences. The British have been traditionally seen as a stumbling block of the EU, as an awkward partner in European integration; what are, then, the reasons that moved...
British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in Its Prime
Langmajerová, Barbora ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Smetana, Vít (referee)
Since 1958 the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament was the best known British organisation opposing nuclear weapons. They organized the greatest protest activities mainly in two critical periods of the Cold War: 1958-1963 and 1979-1987. The intent of my thesis is to compare the work of the Campaign in these two historical eras. In connection with the functioning of the anti-nuclear protest movement the paper focuses on several issues: (1) the circumstances of the establishment and resurfacing of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, (2) its main activities, (3) the reasons why the protests faded away, (4) changes of the membership, (5) affiliated groups and international cooperation, (6) relationship between the campaigners and the Labour Party, (7) reactions of the British governments and (8) of general public. In addition to the analysis of the Campaign's work the paper tries to explain the political and historical context as well. A chapter describing the 1960s and 1970s was included for better continuity of the text. At that time the British population wasn't that interested in the nuclear armament and the activities of the Campaign were considerably limited. My thesis should explain the main changes in the perception of the nuclear threat during the Cold War and find the most important...
In conversation with Norman Fairclough : introducing neoliberalism into the television policy of the Labour Party in the UK, 1992-1997
Soukupová, Lenka ; Rovná, Lenka (advisor) ; Vochocová, Lenka (referee)
- 62 - 8. SUMMARY The thesis deals with the television policy of the Labour Parry, 1992-1997. The topic works as a framework for interpretation of Norman Fairclough's concepts, applying his transdisciplinary approach and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). Within the framework, I answer simple questions such as whether discourse that had reached the status of policy can have real economic impact (in the case of Campaign for Press and Broadcasting not) or where the global discourse meets the local (issues of cross media ownership and new technologies). In my quest to better understand the relationship between social change and discourse, I follow the history of deregulation of the broadcasting duopoly, the way of the Labour Party towards deregulation and in the light of this information analyse three different texts and shortly follow up on coherence in the 1992 and 1997 Labour and Conservative manifestos. To conclude, I appreciate the wide academic freedom that discourse and its interconnectivity provides. As discourses can influence society, a free society should understand and participate in its discourses. In Labour Party television policy, the participation was certainly not complete.

The evalution of the current situation of gambling regulation in the Czech republic in comparison with some other members of the European union, especially the United kingdom
Šilhavík, Petr ; Vostrovská, Zdenka (advisor) ; Maule, Petr (referee)
This bachelor thesis describes the current state of gambling regulation mostly in the Czech republic and in the United kingdom. One of the main topics is the legislation framework of gambling in these two countries. It also analyzes the social costs and benefits of gambling and mentions some statistical data. There are also evaluations of results of some studies, that were studying the actual social impacts of gambling on people. The United kingdom was chosen, because their gambling industry is not controlled by the government, like in the Czech republic. It is controlled by non-governmental institution called The U.K. Gambling commission. This thesis proves that the non-state regulated gambling environment in the United kingdom shows much better results than state regulated one in the Czech republic.

Zvěřinová, Iva ; Ščasný, M. ; Czajkowski, M. ; Kyselá, E.
The study summarises results of a questionnaire survey on preferences of inhabitants of the Czech Republic, Poland and the UK for climate change policies. While Czechs would be on average willing to pay around 13-17 EUR per month for the 40% or 80% GHG emission reductions, and the citizens of the UK would be willing to pay 44-46 EUR per month, the Poles’ mean WTP for adopting these targets vs. the current 20% target was not statistically significantly different from zero.
