Thesis Comparison of selected Czech translations of Cervantes's Don Quixote Vojtěch Kolomý Abstract The aim of this thesis is to compare the last two translations of Cervantes's Don Quixote: the translation realised by Václav Černý in 1931 and the translation of Zdeněk Šmíd from 1952. Although the thesis focuses on the original versions of both translations, the later changed editions are taken into account too. The structure of the thesis is as follows: First, the thesis analyses Cervantes's original text with respect to the translation and after a short chapter about the first Czech translators of Don Quixote and their translations, it describes the translations of Černý and Šmíd and the circumstances of the genesis of both translations. Then, the core of this thesis is a detailed parallel comparison of certain passages from Don Quixote. In the final chapter, the findings are applied. Czech translations and reception of Nigerian literature written in English

This thesis provides an overview of Czech translations of Nigerian literature written in English and their reception since 1960s. Its main focus are novels and other prose fiction, first in the context of Nigerian history, culture and postcolonial experience, factors that influence an author's creative choices, such as the choice of themes and appropriation strategies aimed at transforming English for specifically African purposes. The thesis then moves to the issue of Czech translations of Nigerian works; it considers the nature and changes in publishing policies before and after 1989 and the effect of official state ideology, censorship and market on the choice of literary texts and composition of peritexts. The thesis contains short analyses of translation strategies regarding the exotic elements in researched texts and related appropriation strategies employed by authors. The reception research is based on studying mainly literary magazines and aims to create a diachronic map of reception events consisting of periods of heightened readership interest.

Czech Faces of Franz Kafka before World War II

The present study focuses on the analysis of the changes of Franz Kafka's reception in the Czech context before World War II, i. e. on the analysis of Czech translations and critical reflections in Czech language of his works. The study is divided into two symmetrical (in time) parts: the first one focuses on Kafka's reception in his lifetime (1909-1922), the second one on the reception after his death (1924-1939). In the first part, translations of Kafka's office publications are analyzed in the context of their origin, Kafka's part (as an author) in the formation of the original texts as a source for their translation and set in the context of his belletristic works; in the prosopographically oriented analysis the aim is further focused on the reception of Kafka's belletristic texts in his lifetime and on different strategies of translation by authors who translated his texts into Czech during his lifetime (Milena Jesenská, Milena Illová, Jaroslav Dohnal), Kafka's responses and how they are reflected in his work. Women Translators from French in the History of Translation: Czech Women and the Post-National Revival Era

In the context of current discussions about gender and feminism this works tries to look deeper into the question of gender in translatology where gender in particular takes on the double role - on the one hand the role of grammatical gender in its linguistic form and on the other the role of social gender construction with regards to the person who translates. The aim of this work apart from the theoretical insight in the connected domains is mainly to assemble a concise overview of translations from French written by the Czech female translators in the second half of the 19th century. Additionally, the work also treats the question of Czech emancipation movement and contributes at least with basic biographical information to the knowledge of mentioned female translators. The acquired data for the overview of translations from French were assembled in the form of bibliographical index which reflects both translations published as books and in the periodical press for each of the female translators. The results of this work allow to consider one chapter of Czech history translation from the "female point of view" and at the same time might serve as a basis for further research in this field.

Comparison of translation methods and procedures in translations of Hungarian literature in the Czech and Slovak languages in the first and the second half of the 20th century

This bachelor thesis has theoretical and empirical character. The thesis focuses on the comparison of the translation methods used in the first and second half of the 20th century in the Czech and Slovakian translations of Hungarian literature. The theoretical part discusses the basic ideas of the theory of translation by Jiří Levý from the second half of the 20th century and other Czech and Slovak theoreticians. Also presents the basic concepts for the translation process and determines the classification criteria for the empirical part, and also the expected results. The practical part presents the working procedure for the investigation, the structure of chapters and the analysis of the novels used by the translation methods and approaches. Selected novels are mentioned chronologically according to the date of the original release: Mór Jókai: A kőszívű ember fiai, Mór Jókai: Fekete gyémántok, Kálmán Mikszáth: Beszterce ostroma, Ferenc Molnár: A Pál utcai fiúk, Sándor Márai: Csutora. For the applied methods examples are listed from separate translations. These examples are to represent differences in the methods for a specific period. Stylistic Stringency and the Economy of Expression in Selected Works of Contemporary Norwegian Prose and in Their Czech Translations

The aim of this thesis is to document the process of translating literary texts that have no stylistic equivalent in the target culture. The research is based on selected works by three contemporary Norwegian authors whose style is perceived as very specific. The theoretical part discusses current tendencies in Norwegian as well as in Czech prose writing and also approaches to literary translation developed in translation studies are presented in this part of the thesis. The other part of this thesis focuses on the unique styles of Hanne Ørstavik, Erlend Loe and Jon Fosse. The significant features of their styles are documented in analyses of their novels. These analyses at then used for the assessment of the Czech translations.

Czech translations of Bob Dylan´s song texts

The topic of the present paper is translation of Bob Dylan's lyrics into Czech. The paper focuses on the analysis and comparison of translations from Czech translators, especially those of Michael Žantovský. The paper examines the extent to which the functional characteristics of the originals have been maintained in the various Czech translations. Special attention is given to the relation between semantic accuracy and "successful" translations. Preceding the analyses is the theoretical part, which include brief Dylan's biography and the overview of all available Czech translations of Bob Dylan's lyrics.
