Analysis of information sources in Czech dailies'coverage about the Dozimetr case
Rogner, Šimon ; Hanzal, Jaromír (advisor) ; Trunečka, Ondřej (referee)
The bachelor thesis focuses on the information sources used by the Czech printed national serious daily newspapers (Deník N, E15, Hospodářské noviny, Lidové noviny, MF DNES, Právo) in their coverage of the Dozimetr case. The thesis uses quantitative content analysis to examine which information sources the dailies quoted in the first month after the beginning of the Dozimetr case. In June 2022, the police charged thirteen people in this case, including then- deputy mayor Petr Hlubuček and Zlín businessman Michal Redl, for alleged corruption in the Prague Transport Company. One of the objectives of the research is to determine the extent to which the media cited unnamed sources or non-public police documents. The alleged overuse of such sources is regularly repeated in discussions of media coverage of criminal cases. The theoretical part of the thesis summarises the typology of information sources, information sources used in criminal cases and the way information is provided from criminal proceedings according to Czech legislation and case law. It also presents the ethical challenges faced by the media in covering criminal cases. The results of the quantitative content analysis are also evaluated in qualitatively, which includes a critical assessment of the media's work and recommendations for...
Ethical Principles of Czech Journalists in Reporting about Terrorism
Navrátilová, Barbora ; Hanzal, Jaromír (advisor) ; Groman, Martin (referee)
An emergency situation like terrorism brings many dilemmas to media ethics This thesis focuses on the question of how selected Czech journalists ethically cover the topic of terrorism, even though the Czech Republic has not experienced a major terrorist attack of the kind seen in Western Europe after 2015. First, the concept of terrorism and its forms and trends are described, then the relationship between terrorism and the media is presented. To illustrate how codes of ethics think about such events, three Czech audiovisual media codes and three foreign ones, available in English, are compared. In the empirical part, the paper focuses on data from qualitative research and follows the principles of grounded theory. Interviews with eight journalists provide insight into how they think about ethics when reporting on terrorism, what rules they have developed and what other ethical areas they draw rules from. Among the principles they name, verifying information, not publishing explicit footage without reason, or trying to suppress information about a terrorist. Another finding is that selected journalists perceive that terrorists want to gain visibility through the media and by reporting on the acts, journalists help fulfill their cause. The result of the thesis is not a comprehensive theory but an...

On results of the agenda-setting analysis was conducted securitisation analysis. The analysis shows at least one significant correlation between the government's specific securitisation speech act and how people perceived pandemic threats. CEZ's affair from the point of view of Czech and Bulgarian press
Kraevská, Markéta ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Hanzal, Jaromír (referee)
The diploma thesis The CEZ affair from the perspective of the Czech and Bulgarian press deals with the media portrayal of the unrests in Bulgaria in February and March 2013, which were caused by the high prices for electricity that had been supplied, among others, by the parastatal Czech company CEZ. This company became a symbol of the protests. The basis for the analysis and comparison consists of the Czech dailies Mladá fronta Dnes, Právo, Hospodářské noviny and the Bulgarian dailies Trud, 24 chasa and Standart. The reference period is February 2013, when the protests began and subsequently culminated at the end of the month. This work aims to describe how the whole affair was depicted in selected examples of Czech and Bulgarian press. Subsequently, these two approaches are compared. In addition to the analysis, the thesis also touches the topic of modern history of Bulgaria and an outline of Czech-Bulgarian relations. The individual periodicals used for the analysis, as well as the energetical concept of Bulgaria are introduced in order to achieve easier understanding of the entire problem.
Uprising in Libya: "The Al-Jazeera Effect"
Hanzal, Jaromír ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Bednařík, Petr (referee)
The bachelor thesis Uprising in Libya: "The Al-Jazeera Effect" uses a quantitative analysis to examine the relationship the Czech printed media has towards the Arab news network Al Jazeera. The preliminary theoretical part is divided into three sections. In the first section, the author presents Al Jazeera as an important actor in the regional and global television news market. The second section summarizes the findings about two interesting phenomenons that aren't unanimously accepted by academic literature - the so called "CNN effect" and the "Al Jazeera effect". The third section then reflects on the current quantitative research that deals with Al Jazeera's news coverage. The core of this thesis rests solely on the quantitative research. The author focused on key events that could be expected to increase the references to the Al Jazeera network. Therefore, the thesis examined two twelve month periods in which international news outlets informed of the events related to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11th 2001, and of the development of anti-regime uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa collectively labeled as the Arab Spring in 2011. The ten-year gap in between these two periods has given the author a chance to focus particularly on the change in the...

Vilímová, Tereza ; Hanzal, Jaromír (advisor) ; Vochocová, Lenka (referee)
The master's thesis deals with the citizen photojournalism and the citizen videojournalism in the Czech media landscape. It focuses on the frequency of the amateur photographs and videos published on the selected news web sites and also on the gatekeeping process. This master's thesis also reflects the editor's opinions on the citizen photojournalism and the citizen videojournalism. The citizen journalism is usually viewed from the perspective of the citizen journalists, but this master's thesis brings the view from the second side, from the media professionals. The thesis uses the combination of the quantitative and qualitative methods. Firstly, there was conducted the quantitative content analysis. Secondly, there were interviewed the media professionals. The conclusions of the master's thesis indicate that the citizen photojournalism and the citizen videojournalism is rarely used on the Czech web sites. The media professionals evaluate this phenomenon positively, find its contributions to the news flow but only under the certain conditions. On the other hand, they do not find the citizen photojournalism and videojournalism absolutely necessary element for the news service.

A comparison of news reports and the preparation of a regionalpublic television broadcast in the Czech republic and Poland
Bilanová, Joanna ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Hanzal, Jaromír (referee)
News service is an important aspect of the journalistic aktivity. I tis main goal is to inform the public about actualities. Even though the news service is subject to strict regulations, we can observe substantial differences between the programs of different TV channels and also between broadcasting in different countries. My work consists of an investigation into the differences in broadcasting in two bordering countries - the Czech Republic and Poland. This essay primarily focuses on the comparison of the major local broadcasting channels Události v regionech ČT Ostrava and Aktualności TVP Katowice. I am mainly concerned about the differences in production of individual news, beginning with the choice - making as to what news to include, through the production of the news, and finishing with the final broadcasting. My research question is: Are there any differences between local broadcasting of these two channels? The main method of investigation employed in this essay is a semiotic analysis together with a quantitative analysis and interviews.
