The Issue of Psychological working with the Deaf

The presented doctoral dissertation aims to provide a deeper understanding of psychological work with Deaf clients, both from therapeutic and diagnostic perspectives. The main focus of the study is the process of modifying and translating psychological tests into sign language, as well as the specifics of therapeutic work with the Deaf. The author believes that the Deaf are a linguistic and cultural minority with all the characteristics that this designation entails. The paper maps out the historical, linguistic, and social contexts that have influenced or have previously influenced the Deaf community and directly impact the formation of Deaf identity. In the diagnostic section, the author introduces a modified PFT (C-W) psychological test in sign language, describing the translation process and the manner of test modification. The usability of this adapted test was verified on a sample of 20 Deaf individuals. This verification aimed to determine the test's relevance and reliability within the Deaf context. The study further examines challenges related to adapting other psychological tests for the Deaf. The final apprenticeship exam according to a unified assignment - a description of the current state in selected secondary vocational schools for the Deaf in the Czech Republic

This bachelor thesis focuses on the final exam which was, in 2014/2015, unified for all the graduates of secondary schools providing secondary education with apprenticeship certificate. The point of this thesis is to analyze said final exam in certain hand-picked secondary vocational schools as well as some vocational schools for the Deaf. Furthermore, this study deals with the process of applying this mandatory unified assignment, how the individual needs of a student are met, how the supporting measures fit in and how the traditional approach affects these changes. In the second part, the research survey, the method of content analysis of curricular documents (framework educational programmes and school educational programmes), observation during final exam and semi-structured interviews with teachers has been used. Hearing loss in adolescence or early adulthood - description of a current situation in the Czech Republic based on case studies

(in English) The topic of the bachelor thesis is hearing loss in adolescence or early adulthood. The thesis describes the uniqueness of this developmental period, the specifics of partial or complete and progressive or sudden hearing loss and finally the changes that hearing loss brings to a young person's life, be it either in the personal life, study life or a working life, mainly then focusing on finding solutions to emerging situations related to hearing loss, in communication, in relationships, etc. The thesis also includes a research probe. The aim of the research was to find out - using semi-structured interviews with ten respondents - how the care for people who have partially or completely lost their hearing in adolescence or early adulthood currently looks like in the Czech Republic. Children with concurrent intellectual and hearing disabilities: Their education and communication

(in English) The bachelor's thesis deals with the development of communication skills and with the process, that takes place in education of children with mental and concurrent hearing disabilities, as described in foreign and domestic literature. The aim of this study is to describe how selected facilities approach children, what forms of communication are used, what advantages and limitations they have and how this affects the children's education. For this reason, the work also deals with the education system and the options it offers. The issue is viewed in a broad context, including surrounding influences. This work describes case studies of concrete children in concrete facilities. Information about the situation in selected establishments in the Czech Republic was obtained through qualitative interviews with special educators and Special centre education centres staff. Adjectives in Czech sign language?

The leading topic af this thesis is to laok for an answer to tbe following question: Are there any means af expressing the properties af entities in Czech sign language and ifso, can we think ofthese means as adjectives which laok and wark in a very similar way in Czech spoken language? The author is aware af the different modality af Czech spoken and sign language which may cause a difference in the classification af lexical categories in both languages. That is the reason why tbe author gives priority to dea1ing with language typology and word/sign category cIassification issues in general. Subsequently, the author uses tbe semantic, morphological and syntactic conditions af lexica1 category classification to describe the form and function af lexical items that express the properties af entities in Czech sign language and she correlates them with tbe [orm and function of adjectives in Czech spoken language. The Czech sign language data for the research have been callected by elicitation method from spontaneous cammunication af deaf sign language users. The author deals with the expression af possession in Czech sign language as well. Finally she proves some af the facts regarding adjectives in Czech sign language by providing examples from written texts of deaf Czech individuals.

The Language of the Deaf and a Cultural Minority

The aim of this work is to provide comprehensive view of the deaf as languagecultural minority. The thesis is divided into four parts, each covering different topič. The first part explains what the criteria for considering person deaf are. The two distinct approaches are studied - language-cultural approach and medicine approach. The second part describes particularities of Czech sign language, being considered as natural language. We explain why the sign language is integrál part of the deaf community, its culture, and consequently of a language-cultural approach. Relation between language-cultural approach and development of deaf child is emphasized, with main focus on the question of satisfying the basic needs of a child. In the last part, the generál description of terms community and culture is given, including detailed description of the deaf community, studying individual properties of the culture. All the description is accompanied by examples. At the end of the thesis, those legal documents, the aim of which is to contribute to improvement of a view of a deaf community by the hearing people, are mentioned.

Place-names in Czech sign language. Signs of main cities in the Czech Republic and European capitals

The thesis for my Bachelor degree focuses on the use of Czech Sign Language to signify place-names of cities. The aims of this thesis are a) to set up the classification of the urbonyms (city place-names) in Czech Sign Language, b) to question on the motivation of single signs as used by the Deaf habitants of Prague c) to outline the basic knowledge about the generational diversity of the gained material and finaIly, d) to discuss social and cultural aspects of the use of place-names by the local Deaf community. In my thesis, I am also dealing with the urbonyms as featured in the present Czech Sign Language vocabularies. Several sign language dictionaries issued from different countries are also consulted a10ng with those specialising on the sign vocabulary of urbonyms. The research material was obtained by the elicitation method with 19 Deaf respondents living in Prague and the interviews were recorded by the camcorder. The recordings contain the urbonyms of selected main Czech Republic cities a10ng with European capita1 cities. The resultant CD-ROM contains signs of the main Czech Republic cities and European capitals in Czech Sign Language as produced by Czech Deaf people. Changes in height of articulation in Czech Sign Language affected by coarticulation

This thesis focuses on changes in the height of articulation in Czech Sign Language affected by coarticulation. The theoretical base of the thesis originates from both Czech and foreign linguistic literature devoted to phonological processes in speech. One part of the thesis is basic insight into the issues of phonological processes in sign languages. The research of the height of articulation in Czech Sign Language affected by coarticulation follows the recent studies dedicated on changes in height of articulation of speakers of Dutch, American, Australian and New Zealand Sign Languages (Ormel, Crasborn, Kooij 2013; Tyrone, Mauk 2010; Grosvald, Corina 2012a; Russell, Wilkinson, Janzen 2011; Lucas et al. 2002; Schembri et al. 2009). The goal of the research is to describe the changes in height of articulation by the one-handed lexical signs with the place of articulation in the head area (the target signs KNOW and REMEMBER) affected by their phonetic context. The data were collected during the recordings of sign langugae production of 15 participants, all speakers of Czech Sign Language. 1400 tokens of target signs were excerpted and analysed in total. Signs denoting European states in Czech sign language

Zeměpisná vlastní jména tvoří nepochybně důležitou součást lexika každého jazyka, a to jak jazyka mluveného, tak i znakového. Ve znakových jazycích tato oblast nebyla dosud podrobně popsána. Pokud byly výzkumy různých národních znakových jazyků zaměřeny na oblast proprií, pak se jednalo zejména o vlastní jména osobní, která jsou důležitou součástí kultury neslyšících. Jak se zdá, ani zařazování zeměpisných vlastních jmen do slovníků znakového jazyka a znakové řeči není příliš systematické a tato problematika je spíše podceňována. Z rozsáhlé oblasti zeměpisných jmen jsem si ke zpracování zvolila znaky evropských států. Znalost názvů států a zejména států Evropy je důležitá, neboť v dnešní době je zdůrazňována orientace v dění ve světě a navíc se Česká republika stala součástí mezinárodního společenství Evropské unie. V této době je také možné mnohem více poznávat ostatní kultury a státy. Domnívám se, že ze států světa patří evropské státy jsou u nás nejznámější a že vzhledem k poloze České republiky je jejich znalost považována za nezbytnou. Ve své práci se nejprve zaměřím na zařazení těchto jazykových pojmenování, tzn. choronym, do systému jazyka a rovněž i na vymezení států Evropy a jejich názvů, protože jak se ukazuje, geografické příručky nejsou v tomto ohledu jednotné.
