The Dark Side of Comicality in the Plays of Jára Cimrman

The bachelor thesis will focus on definition and decoding of main elements, that are connected to humor and to concept of comedy as it is. It also strives to capture those elements in creations of the Jára Cimrman Theatre. At the same time it endeavors to befall the elemets, that stand on the opposite pole than the idea of "gentle humor", which is usually highlighted in relation with poetry of said plays (and also with whole work of author Zdeňek Svěrák). The thesis focuses on the means by which is in the comedy of Jára Cimrman Theatre represented female character, character of monster, obscenity, voyeurism and vulgarity. It aims to show that even plays from the pen of Ladislav Smoljak and Zdeněk Svěrák bear in themselves something wicked. Thesis shall as well in a spirit of cultural history ask itself a question about conection between this thematic part with cultural tradition, whose roots are probably in what people admired in 19. century during circus "freak show", during which they were offered a deviant spectacle full of monsters and handicapped people.

The Spanish Insults

"The Spanish Insults" The objective of the present paper was to explore, as the title indicates, the rich variety of the Spanish insults. We centered mainly on the comparison of the Spanish insults to the Czech insults and observed the diferences and specific characteristics of Spanish insults. We began the first part with the definition of formal and informal language and its sociolects, because we believe that it helps to understand the properties of the insults, since they have many common characteristics with the sociolects. Afterwards, we tried to describe the historical and cultural backgrounds, because due to different evolutions in each country, the habits to use insults and curses are different, especially concerning the curses, which are still very common in Spain. In Czech Republic the curses fell into oblivion during the last century, while the people were becoming more atheistic. The role of taboo is also very important, because in each society, taboo is what's influencing the usage and the importance of every insult. Neverthless, the insults don't serve only for attacking somebody or to show disappointment, but they also have other functions, such as identifying with the members of the group or to address someone in a friendly way. Translation and Stylistic Analysis of One Chapter of Casualties of Peace by Edna O'Brien

This bachelor thesis focuses on difficulties encountered when translating English fiction into Czech. It is divided into two sections. The practical part provides the translation of one chapter of the novel Casualties of Peace written by an Irish author Edna O'Brien in 1966. The theoretical part delivers the stylistic analysis including choice of register, morphological, lexical, syntactic and pragmatic aspects. Each of them is illustrated with the commented examples based on theoretical background from works by Jiří Levý, Dagmar Knittlová and Olga Krijtová.

Sports as a subject matter in contemporary Czech drama

Theater and radio plays and productions with sports as their subject matter offer a new thematic area in the history of Czech drama and theater. The authors of these texts are above all Petr Kolečko and David Drábek. They select primarily popular sports (football, hockey, tennis, skiing, track and field) and their world-famous representatives (J. Jágr, R. Federer, R. Nadal, H. Fibingerová). The dramatic picture of sports and of athletes is not one of adoration, but rather, a critical one bordering on caricature. The language of athletes, fans, and functionaries (see for example the text by P. Čtvrtníček entitled “Ivánku, kamaráde, můžeš mluvit?” [Ivánek, my friend, can you talk?]) is full of non-standard expressions, Common Czech and sports slang, as well as expressives and vulgarisms.

Use of Vulgarisms in Journalism Texts

The present master's thesis tackles the position of vulgarisms within the system of language as used in texts published in Czech and French weekly opinion magazines. The thesis takes a theoretic and empiric approach, the first part dealing with the definition of the term of vulgarism in Czech and French stylistics and the delimitation of its role in the style of journalistic texts. The second part of the thesis describes the practical approach of Czech and French weeklies to vulgarisms in their texts based on a survey among editing staff of the major publishing houses both in France and in the Czech Republic. The outcomes of the survey were compared to the analysis results conveyed on a corpus built out of texts published in Le Point and Respekt weeklies. Based on the contrastive analysis of vulgarisms used in Czech and French language corpus, following the critical criteria as outlined in the first part of the thesis, several recommendations are made about French-Czech translations of vulgarisms in journalistic texts. Sexual and excretory vocabulary and contexts of its usage in Romani

This thesis deals with usage of special vocabulary - "sexual and excretion" - in different contexts in a Roma community in Rokycany. This thesis is actually analysis and it focuses on searching for equivalences and differences in Romani language. The author compares these expressions with Czech language as well. The sexual and excretion vocabulary is used in different contexts and it is often used in tabooed situations. The usage of those linguistic instruments depends on a speaker's status in the community.
