This bachelor thesis deals with charakter representation in literature and in film. It focuses on how this topis can be explained from the point of view of narratology or the theory of fiction. It reflects the representation of charakters in literature and in film or factual genres. Introduced theories are demonstrated on specific examples of literature and film that focus on the Tudor dynasty.

Petr Stančík : Mummy Mill - complex narrative analysis

This bachelor thesis attends to complex narrative analysis of novel Mlýn na mumie written by Petr Stančík. This novel was published by Druhý domov in 2014. The analysis covers the story level and the narrative discourse level. At the story level aims to cover all key incidents, characters and space. At the narrative discourse level follows the category of time, the narrator and focalization. The analysis will be completed with the last chapter about the model reader. As a secondary sources for the analysis the Naratologie by the Kubíček, Bílek and Hrabal group, publications Narativní způsoby v české literatuře and Heterocosmica by Lubomír Doležel, publication Sémantika narativního prostoru by Soňa Šinclová and Tomáš Kubíček and publication Vypravěč by Tomáš Kubíček have been used.

The construction of fictional world of fantasy saga A Song of Ice and Fire

This diploma thesis deals with the fantasy saga A Song of Ice and Fire written by American author G. R. R. Martin and the analysis of its fictional world. It explores saga's genre classification and focuses on elements that depart from its genre and which enrich it. Through the narratological analysis of the work, it focuses on the main principles of the construction of the fictional world and its specific characteristics. The basic theoretical framework for the analysis of the saga consists of contemporary fictional worlds that are not called fictional in the sense that they would form a fictional narrative but create a new narrative universe. It is designed to help construct further sequels or narrative turns. The diploma thesis also refers to the phenomenon of transmediality, thanks to which the narrative universe continues to expand and the fictional world becomes more realistic.

The Narratological Analysis of Novel King Rat by China Miéville

This thesis deals with the analysis of the British author's China Miéville's literary debut King Rat. For the analysis, I used especially semiotically/semiologically oriented narratology, the thesis therefore draws especially from the methods used in Roland Barthese's, Tzvetan Todorov's and Lubomír Doležel's works. It also uses methods of Gérard Genette, Seymour Chatman and Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan. I analysed categories from the domain of narratology, specifically: the narrator, story, characters, space (surroundings) and the time.

Comparison of Narrative Methods in Features Published by Respekt and New Yorker

The aim of this thesis is to analyse narrative strategies in the texts of the feature genre in two periodicals. Feature genre is longer genre of journalistic (opinion) character regularly used in printed world media, especially magazines. It is a genre which combines elements of two genres - report and analytical article. This thesis compares features in Czech and American environment, the latter being a more tradiotional for the genre. The two periodicals in question are Respekt and New Yorker. The choice is influenced by the fact that the chief editor of Respekt claims the medium to be inspired by New Yorker. The research method of the work is narrative analysis. Analysed categories are then narrator, focalization, description of a character and a alternating of the report and contextual parts of the feature genre. An important part of the work is analysis of intentionality of the use of certain type of narrators and focalization. Some of the narrative strategies, types of narrators and focalization used in the context of the journalistic texts influence the degree of objectivity/subjectivity of the narrative. Through analysis the comparison of the feature genre in Czech and Anglo-American journals is made, how they differ and what they have in common.

Hyperrealism of Frank Tashlin: Neoformalist Film Analysis of Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?

The aim of this thesis was to analyze the film Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? by the director Frank Tashlin. The initial hypothesis was that this film goes beyond the contemporary Hollywood production and uses highly self-reflexive practices. For the analysis of the film, the approach of neoformalist analysis was chosen, which methodology was defined by Kristin Thompson in the publication Breaking the Glass Armor: Neoformalist Film Analysis. The first section provides a theoretical and methodological reflection of the tools of neoformalist analysis. Following on from this, the methodological approach to film history is reflected, based on the concept of the classical Hollywood cinema and on the book by Robert C. Allen and Douglas Gomery Film History: Theory and Practice. The next chapter summarizes the historical context and influences that have contributed to the shape of the artistic work. In the analytical part, the exposure of popculture structures is described as the central principle of the movie, and with the help of the tools of neoformalist analysis, the author tries to demonstrate how it manifests itself in the different components.

Comparison of fictional world of computer games and of their literary artworks

The main goal of this thesis is to explain the relationship of literature and computer games. The first part deals with the definition of computer RPG genre and literary fantasy genre. It considers aspects which leads players to play computer games and connect between the literary work and the computer game. It deals also with the experience: the experience of the game and reading while specifically dealing with the flow effect and concept of immersion. A central part of this work examines both media through narrative approach. Interpretation and literary analysis of The Witcher Saga by Andrzej Sapkowski and computer game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt follows the specifics of the construction of the story in two different media through narrative figures (events, characters and space) and their possible modifications. Furthermore, it tracks purposes and methods for these variations and their impact on the recipient.

The Catcher in the Rye and A Perfect Day for Bananafish - Motif analysis

The thesis Catcher in the Rye and A Perfect Day for Bananafish - Motif analysis deals with motif analysis of these two literary works by J. D. Salinger. Analysis of the basic motifs of these works reveals the symbolism of Salinger's literary world, where the main themes are childhood, growing up and alienation. Essential role when presenting motifs goes to the main characters, who in these works are very distinctive, therefore they also need to be analyzed. In question of theory, the thesis is based on Boris Tomashevskyˈs concept of motif and narratological perspective of Tomáš Kubíček or Lubomír Doležel. Apart of the analysis itself the theses deals with questions of the relevance in the genre classification of the novel Catcher in the Rye as a Bildungsroman and whether Salinger idealizes childhood in his works or not.
