GL Transparency: Through a Glass, Clearly

GL (Grey literature, interpreted here as grey objects) is very heterogeneous in content, form and quality. Most GL objects evolve through a workflow. Some of these phases involve some form of evaluation or peer review, commonly internal within the management structure of an organisation and possibly involving external advice, including from ‘friendly peers’ via an e-preprint mechanism. Unlike white literature the evaluation process commonly is unrecorded and undocumented. This leads to accusations that grey literature lacks quality and transparency.

A terminology-based Re-definition of Grey Literature

The conventionally accepted definition of Grey Literature, as Information produced and distributed by non-commercial publishing, does not take into consideration either the increasing availability of forms of grey knowledge, or the growing importance of computer-based encoding and management as the standard mode of creating and developing grey literature. Semi-automated terminological analysis of almost twenty years of terminological creativity in the proceedings of eleven GL International Conferences offers the opportunity to pave the way to a bottom-up redefinition of Grey Literature stemming from attested terminological creativity and lexical innovation.

Towards a Prague Definition of Grey Literature

The most common definition of grey literature, the so-called ‘Luxembourg definition’, was discussed and approved during the 3rd International Conference on Grey Literature in 1997. In 2004, at the 6th International Conference on Grey literature in New York City, a postscript was added. The main characteristic of this definition is its economic perspective on grey literature, based on business, publishing and distribution models of the disappearing Gutenberg galaxy. With the changing research environment and new channels of scientific communication, it becomes clear that grey literature needs a new conceptual framework.

Peering through the Review Process: Towards Transparency in Grey Literature

Now that grey literature is readily catalogued, referenced, cited, and openly accessible to subject based communities as well as net users, the claims that grey literature is unpublished or non-published have sufficiently been put to rest. However, now that grey literature has met these former challenges and entered mainstream publishing, it requires in the spirit of science to have a system in place for the quality control of its content. This new challenge has recently been spurred by the IPCC affaire involving the use/misuse of grey literature and is now almost a daily topic in the world media. The purpose of this study will be to explore the degree to which grey literature is reviewed and to compare similarities and differences with formal peer review carried out in various degrees by commercial publishers. This study will further distinguish the review process implemented by grey publishers from that of mavericks and vanity press, where personal opinion and pure speculation run rampant. This study looks at the body of literature on peer review and its relatedness to grey literature. Key concepts and elements in peer review form the framework for a comparative analysis, and these are examined in light of guidelines on peer review submitted by publishers. In addition, alternative models for peer review found during the course of study are compared for their relevance to grey literature.

Bakalářská práce vysvětluje pojmy informace, informační zdroje a informační procesy. V práci jsou popsány veškeré informační zdroje aktuálně používané studenty, pedagogy a pracovníky FM VŠE a analyzována spokojenost uživatelů s nimi. Cílem práce je návrh uživatelského manuálu.

Měnící se význam a vliv informací

Bakalářská práce se zabývá nejprve podstatou lidského myšlení, protože právě v mozku dochází k procesům, díky kterým informace chápeme a pracujeme s nimi. Jsou zde nastíněny důvody, proč lidé jednají různě, i pokud mají stejné údaje, porovnány možnosti rozhodnutí založených na jedinečnosti člověka. Samozřejmostí při práci s informacemi jsou informační zdroje, v textu popsány s ohledem na minulou dobu a současnost. Se zdokonalujícími ICT, nárůstem počtu informací a jejich důležitosti, je kladen velký důraz na zabezpečení informací. Proto jsou zde rozepsány i základní šifrovací algoritmy používané v kryptologii. Závěr práce je věnován náhledu na budoucnost práce s informacemi.

Srovnání produktů z oblasti Product Information Management

Diplomová práce se věnuje problematice Product Information Managementu (PIM) a srovnání jejich nástrojů. Jejím cílem je představit a popsat problematiku PIM v českém jazyce. K dosažení dalšího cíle je třeba stanovit dílčí cíl, a to vytvořit systém kritérií. Samotným dalším cílem je pak analýza a srovnání nástrojů PIM. Pro dosažení výše uvedených cílů je využito těchto postupů: rešerše informačních zdrojů, získávání informací prostřednictvím emailové komunikace, definování srovnávacích kritérií na základě analýzy produktů a empirických zkušeností a znalostí. Vlastní přínosy práce pak kopírují výše uvedené cíle. Práce se skládá ze dvou celků. První, teoretická část se zabývá problematikou definice PIM, kontextu vůči ostatním systémům, funkcionalitou, architekturou a vývojem trhu. Druhá, praktická část se zabývá výběrem nástrojů k porovnání, definicí systém kritérií a srovnání nástrojů PIM.

Informační zdroje VŠE

Cílem práce je poskytnout přehled dostupných informačních zdrojů, které mají studenti a zaměstnanci VŠE k dispozici (seznam zdrojů je na adrese http://ciks.vse.cz). Obsahem je nejen popis jednotlivých zdrojů, ale především návod, jak tyto zdroje používat a jak v nich efektivně vyhledávat. Součástí je i obecný návod na zpracování rešerší. Práce má podobu uživatelského manuálu k těmto zdrojům.
