Comparison of rap lyrics contents in the USA and the Czech Republic

This bachelor thesis deals with a comparison of the content of trap music lyrics in the USA and the Czech Republic. It examines eleven Czech and eleven US songs with the aim of finding out in which topics the lyrics from both countries differ. I hypothesize that the differences in the themes present in Czech and US rap song are due to different socio-cultural influences. The theory part deals with the definition of the basic concepts related to the topic, the history and development of the genre in both countries and the socio-cultural background which influenced the emergence of rap and it's subgenre trap. In addition, it also examines the rap audience, trying to define whether/how rap fans differ from the general population, and in doing so, aiming to provide a better understanding of the connection between the genre and its fans. The final theme discussed in the theory part are streaming services, mainly YouTube, which was used for the purposes of the research. In the empirical part, qualitative content analysis is used to answer the following research questions: (1) How does the frequency of themes contained in the most listened to songs written by Czech musicians and US musicians differ? Linguistic Analysis of Internet Hip Hop Magazines

The thesis deals with the language used in online hip hop magazines. The objective is to describe the language that is characteristic of such magazines. The language is analysed against the backdrop of journalistic style and its genres, and the standard language norm. The language analysis includes articles published in Bbarák and HipHopStage magazines. The thesis also defines hip hop and briefly describes its history, including the beginnings of hip hop music journalism. The practical section of the thesis provides a language analysis of articles published in the selected magazines. It describes the composition of the articles and focuses on the ways to connect with readers. The section also focuses on the orthographic quality of the articles. The final outcome of the analysis is a description of individual language levels, while highlighting characteristic features of the language in online hip hop magazines.
Virtual space as a source of social exclusion of Gypsies - black ghettos, hip hop and rap artists as Gypsy kids role models

This thesis deals with the topic of Romani youth in the hip-hop subculture, inspired by black rappers, a subculture which infiltrates the Czech Romani community especially through social networks and virtual space in general. It brings different views on the current Romani rap scene and it's possible connection with the social exclusion of the Romani community. The target group is Romani youth aged 13 to 26, who frequent Archa low treshold facility for children and youth located in Kutná Hora and Sázava. The aim of this thesis is to map out and describe the blooming subculture of Romani rappers and to seek out the answer to the question, whether Romani rappers acting as role models for Romani youth and their work spreading through social networking sites could have an impact on the social exclusion of Romani people. The research was carried out using qualitative methodology, the key data collection tool used being semi-structured interview.
The evolution of czech hip hop media from subculture to mainstream

This Master's thesis focuses on the history of the hip hop subculture and the character of rappers and female rappers. The aim of this thesis is to analyze chosen hip hop media in the Czech Republic and to determine what is content and also linguistic characteristic of the chosen Czech hip hop media and further to determine the role of rappers and female rappers therein as well as gender balance of the examined media content. The thesis is divided into two sections, this being theoretical and methodical section. The theoretical section firstly examines the history of the hip hop subculture from the global perspective and its evolution in the Czech Republic. The first part of the history section focuses on the main milestones of the hip hop subculture history with the prevailing orientation on music, hip hop media, and other channels of its distribution. In the chapter describing the evolution of hip hop in the Czech Republic the thesis focuses on the development of the music genre, the introduction of the significant interprets and connection of the context with the other aspects of distribution of the hip hop subculture into the mainstream. The Beginnings of the Hip Hop Subculture in the Czech Republic with the Focus on Rap

The aim of the diploma thesis is to conduct a survey of the hip hop music subculture's origins in the Czech Republic. The paper especially focuses on the rap scene. Even though the surveyed phenomena first appeared in the 1980s, the term "hip hop subculture" has been used only since the 1990s. The thesis presents the early musical works of the rap music artists as well as the organization and the course of the first concerts and other hip hop events. Furthermore, the paper deals with the founding and the operation of the specialized web, the magazine, the recording studio and its own record company. The fundamental source of this paper is represented by the several interviews with the rappers and the DJs but also with the organizers of various events, the founder of the magazine and the festival or with the founder of the recording studio. Conjunctural Bratislava

Conjunctural Bratislava is regional study which emphasises the topic of identity and social features of the city and its impact on the physical infrastucture and organisation of the city. First theoretical part introduces the Theory of conjunctural city based on connection between hierarchy and dynamic development in broad sense. Second part provides the systematic view of Bratislava, explaining some aspects of the theory (population, economy, urbanism, transportation, culture). Short chapter is dedicated to current conceptual ideas of Bratislava in terms of a city and a region, too. The last part of the study brings a brief prognostic view of main prospects of the city and some possible problems which may occure soon or later. Empirical study in appendix is aimed to Bratislava's hiphop culture and its musical production. I analysed three local hip hop songs. Bratislava has been chosen for its uniqueness, being one of the very few remaining conjunctural cities in Europe.

It seeks to explore attributes based on which one can define a certain rap expression as the "real" one. The theoretical part includes the definition of the term subculture, main attributes of hip hop (sub)culture, and the definition of authenticity, the key concept of the dissertation. In dialogue with the findings of the hip hop studies of Western countries, this dissertation looks at the authenticity claims expressed in Czech rap music and the context and situations in which the question of authenticity of Czech rappers becomes important. 5 Abstract This thesis is focused on the poetics of czech hip hop lyrics. It deals with meanings lyrics can posess inside the frame of different models of youth subcultures or in context of dominant culture. The comparathive method showed being of good use because of cultural transfer, that lies in the very basics of hip hop music and culture. The relation between music and lyrics in a whole of single performance, whether is it concert or record, is also an important topic of this research.
