Kolářová, Martina ; Vachková, Marie (advisor) ; Šebesta, Karel (referee) ; Ondráková, Jana (referee)
Title: Teaching and Testing Writing. On the Common State School Leaving Exam in German Language. Author: Martina Kolářová Department: Institute of German Studies, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague Superviser: doc. PhDr. Marie Vachková, Ph.D. Abstract: This thesis deals with the topic of writing ability in lessons of German as a foreign language in a context of a State-school leaving exam in German language. New model of this exam is managed centrally and its global character influences the school study in all grammar schools. The thesis concentrates on the way in which this exam influences the study and which consequences it has for the writing ability of students. The research gains the data mainly from the point of view of teachers, but it considers the student's point of view too and analyses results of their written exams. The concern in this topic is based on the current situation of modification of the state-school leaving exam in foreign languages and the criticism of its benefits for students and their study. The foreign language testing has a long tradition and counts to detailed researched fields of didactics which allows a global view on the issues in context of other foreign language exams and on teaching fields connected with testing which creates a theoretical frame of this thesis....
The German ornative Verbs and their possible translations into Czech. A corpus analaysis.
Sivčáková, Petra ; Vachková, Marie (advisor) ; Koptík, Tomáš (referee)
(in English): Main goal of this thesis is to compare possible translations of German ornative verbs into Czech. All verbs in question have been examined using the Czech-German parallel corpus InterCorp. Ornative verbs are created by derivation from non-abstract substantives; their meaning can be paraphrased as follows: "to be equipped with something." By the means of this definition, verbs with the "be-" prefix have been chosen from the Duden Universalwörterbuch; these verbs have further been looked up in the mentioned corpus. From this analysis 47 verbs have emerged. Their translations have been divided into four groups. The most numerous group are translations by a verb (77%), followed by translation by periphrasis (10%). The third group contains verbs in their figurative use (8%). In the last group of translations, none of the aforementioned possibilities is predominant (5%). The group of verbal translations includes a subgroup of translations featuring copula verbs with a substantive/adjective. This subgroup represents more than 20% of all verbal translations.
Terminology of History Science in Focus. On Its Lexicographic Description in a German-Czech Dictionary of Terms
Urbanová, Eva ; Šemelík, Martin (advisor) ; Vachková, Marie (referee)
This thesis focuses on the terminology of History Science and its lexicographic description in a German-Czech dictionary of terms. It starts with a discussion about various types of equivalence and the need for an encyclopedic section. In particular, attention is paid to the lexical gaps that result from zero equivalence. Lexical gaps are demonstrated on the translation of culture-specific terms, i.e. the selection of a surrogate equivalent. It is shown that surrogate equivalents require relatively detailed encyclopedic notes and that their usage can only be established within the examples. The dictionary article of a culture-specific lemma must therefore provide such citations and examples that both demonstrate the applicability of the surrogate in the context and add encyclopedic information.
Current use of helvetisms and their lexicographic treatment
Štrachová, Zuzana ; Vachková, Marie (advisor) ; Šemelík, Martin (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to provide an overview of currently used helvetisms in the field of cuisine and eating. In the initial part, a concept of German as a pluricentric language is introduced, followed by a description of the language situation in the German speaking Switzerland and basic characteristics of the Swiss variety. Five sources were analyzed, besides other things also a journal of a Switzerland-based Germanist and business company Migros' product database. Internet was used as a linguistic corpus in order to provide an analysis tool next to the selected dictionaries. Ascertained helvetisms were assessed on the basis of their existing lexicographic form and the degree of their intelligibility for other German speaking countries speakers. Selected helvetisms were processed as dictionary entries for the emerging Large German-Czech Academic Dictionary. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
On Sense Division in a Bilingual Dictionary
Hagenhoferová, Lucie ; Vachková, Marie (advisor) ; Šemelík, Martin (referee)
This thesis deals with the dividing the dictionary entry into several "sub-meanings", i.e. with the sense division, and with the closely related ordering of these "sub-meanings", i.e. with the sense ordering, with the bilingual passive German-Czech dictionary in the centre of interest. This thesis deals shortly also with the discriminating the senses by different means, i.e. with the sense discrimination. With these three subjects chronologically following the lexicographic decisions the matter of equivalence and the understanding of the term of meaning are correlated. In the theoretical part of this thesis the specifics of the sense division and the sense ordering in the monolingual and in the bilingual lexicography are introduced, in the practical part of this thesis the possibilities of the sense division and the sense ordering are exemplified with ten chosen substantive lemmas prepared for the Large German-Czech Academic Dictionary in progress. For every lemma the most suitable arrangement of the lemma is suggested, which is then compared with the corresponding dictionary entry in the source dictionary Duden - Deutsches Universalwörterbuch. The differences between the arrangements of the microstructure illustrate the necessity of the revision and eventual modification of the adopted structure...

German Adjective Idioms from the Contrastive and Lexicographical Point of View. On Variability of Idiomatic Comparisons
Bezdíčková, Alžběta ; Vachková, Marie (advisor) ; Šichová, Kateřina (referee)
1 Abstract This paper aims at an empirical corpus driven analysis of a closed set of German comparative idioms with adjectives. Regularities in their variations are examined from several points of view. The contrastive German-Czech perspective contributes to a more objective understanding of the phenomenon itself. Corpus research results are integrated into the context of practical lexicography. The strategy of equivalence in a bilingual dictionary is discussed and reevaluated both theoretically and practically. Keywords: phraseology, comparisons, variability, lexicography, dictionary, corpus
Near Synonyms from a Corpus Linguistic Perspective - Verbs in Focus
Salačová, Helena ; Šemelík, Martin (advisor) ; Vachková, Marie (referee)
This bachelor thesis is concerned with the near synonymy of German verbs whose usage is oft very problematic for non-native speakers. Word meaning and identical or different context of synonyms (anfangen - beginnen - starten; herstellen - erzeugen - produzieren) are researched using the German reference corpus DeReKo, more specifically the coocurrence databank CCDB. The first part of the thesis is a brief introduction to the vast field of synonymy; the other, empirical part is dedicated to analysis of CNS-maps contrasting co- ocurrence profiles selected verbs. Using these maps we are enabled to determine the different similarities in the usage of these verbs.
Volker Klüpfel's and Michael Kobr's "Milchgeld" in Czech translation
Hubinová, Aneta ; Vachková, Marie (advisor) ; Šemelík, Martin (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the analysis of Martin Všetíček's Czech translation of Volker Klüpfel and Michal Kobr's novel Milchgeld. The thesis focuses on those parts of the translation that make understanding the text difficult. Solutions for these shortcomings are suggested using professional literature that deals with the theory of artistic translation. A separate part of the thesis is concerned with dialect, which fulfils a specific function in the book. A thorough analysis of the translation seeks to help answering the question why there is a considerable imbalance between the success of the German original and that of the Czech translation. Key words: translation, analysis, Volker Klüpfel, Michael Kobr, Milchgeld, Mléčný groš, Allgäu dialect
Lexicographical Treatment of the Musical Terminology - Verbs in Focus
Suchánková, Eva ; Šemelík, Martin (advisor) ; Vachková, Marie (referee)
The goal of this bachelor thesis is the processing of the verbs from the music terminology according to the lexicographical raster for a German-Czech dictionary of music terminology that will be available in the form of an online database by the end of the year 2014. For processing the verbs I used an empiric method based on research in the online linguistic corpuses, where relevant examples of the use of the verbs were searched. One of the main aspects this thesis is dedicated to is specifying the group of the verbs that will be included into the database. The main source for the selection of the verbs was the Duden Universal Wörterbuch (DUW). In the inventorying of the German musical terms, its macrostructure has shown itself to be insufficient. The group of the verbs intended for processing was therefore expanded by other entries.
