Kottová, Anna ; Kraus, Jiří (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
My thesis named "Attitude of Czech dailies Lidové noviny, Mladá fronta Dnes and Právo to the first direct Czech presidential election" should confirm or disprove the bias of the three Czech newspapers in the period between the first and the second round of the direct presidential election. The first part of thesis focuses on selected chapters of media, linguistic and semiotic theories regarding bias. It also discusses the process of direct elections and CVs of Karel Schwarzenberg and Miloš Zeman. At first, I used quantitative analysis to determine if the newspapers were balanced and provide comparable space to the both candidates. Then I applied the qualitative analysis to find out what language and semiotic components used the authors from newspapers to inform the public about the candidates of the second round of direct elections. Depending on the findings, I divide the articles into positive, neutral, negative categories for Karel Schwarzenberg and positive, neutral, negative for Miloš Zeman. After the victory of Miloš Zeman the bias was discussed. This thesis should answer the question of whether the three Czech newspapers were biased in favour of Karel Schwarzenberg or Miloš Zeman between the first and the second round of the first direct Czech presidential election.

Czech Literary criticism on internet
Kučera, Štěpán ; Kraus, Jiří (advisor) ; Čeňková, Jana (referee)
This rigorous thesis surveys Czech literary criticism on internet and its relationship towards printed literary criticism, or generally, relationship between new and traditional media. I define what "Czech literary criticism on the internet" can mean, and describe its situation in 2009 and 2012. I created an imaginary central line going from the pole of traditional media to the pole of new media and aligned the groups of websites on this scale. I found important projects there that exist in the periphery of Czech literary life (as reflected by the traditional media). Then I asked members of the web projects to fill in a short questionnaire focused on literary criticism on internet and its relationship to the culture of traditional media. Also, I posed the same questions to Czech book publishers as representatives of the traditional culture. In comparison of 2009 and 2012 I found out that the websites connected to the traditional printed culture tend to parish, or on the contrary, transform into professional projects (usually with state financial support). The closer to the pole of new media, the more viable the websites tend to be. I also notices increasing role of social networks, such as Facebook. For some websites these networks have become a welcome platform to address wider audience, while for others...

Diploma thesis "Media as an Agent of National Self-Confidence: Analysis of the Victory of the Czechoslovak Ice Hockey Players at the 1947 World Championship" deals with the reflection of the major sport event in the Czechoslovak media and how this reflection inspired the audience. The goal of this diploma thesis is to describe the dependance between the media coverage and the national self-confidence, which results from the national identity. Therefore, I focused on the chosen newspaper titles to analyze the content they produced during the 1947 Ice Hockey World Championship. I defined a hypothesis, based on observation and scholarly literature, that the media used the coverage to strengthen the national self-confidence and redefine the national identity. My second hypothesis was the idea, that this kind of coverage led to an active response among the audience. Before I started analyzing the three chosen titles (Lidova demokracie, Rude Pravo, Prace), I delivered complex structure of theoretical concepts, describing the influence media have towards the audience and also reasons why the members of the audience use media in their everyday life. I also focused on the historical and political context, as well as the media landscape that shaped the content of that time. I conducted the analysis and...

Dvořáková, Zuzana ; Kraus, Jiří (advisor) ; Švelch, Jaroslav (referee)
Having focused on Facebook, the virtual community, the aim of this thesis was to study the social network discourse. Due to very complicated structure of the social network my study dealt with the discourse on its contextual level, which enabled us to interconnect particular attributes of this difficult system and gradually revealed their mutual influence. The contextual line of appropriate chapters then joined the discoursive factors of the social network, starting with their makro level continuing to their very specific manifestation - the communication acts. Within the conclusions of this thesis it is to finally analyze in which form the concrete discoursive perspectives have projected into the more exact demonstration of the social network discourse.

Kárníková, Lydie ; Kraus, Jiří (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
Lydie Kárníková Ideology in the Language of Media Diploma thesis 2011 Abstract The thesis scrutinizes the ways in which three Czech nationwide print media process the same news topics. Through analysis of three thematic discourses it studies the differences in approaching and presenting reality. The main focus lies in the argumentative and language aspects of the media texts with the aim to find implicit references on sets of values and beliefs typical for the perspective of the particular news media title and for the society in general. Implicit sets of values woven into the media contents have a form of an ideology: These ideological ideas can be very different across the society due to the number of opinion groups present within the whole society. In modern democratic countries with opinion plurality there are different ideological ideas neighbouring within the media market. The news as a genre does not allow expressing one's own opinion or approach explicitly: the news media thus embed their opinions into the structures of language. The core hypothesis of this thesis is the ability of language to create meanings. With the help of methodology that combines argumentative approach with analysis of syntactic and lexical modes of expressions the thesis tries to get into the language structure, looking for...
