Frantová, Veronika ; Vorlová, Marie (advisor) ; Roth, Martin (referee)
My research work "The journey from a self-help group to professional non-profit-making" discusses the non-profit-making organization Slunečnice. First, my work concentrates on non-profit-making sector and then it describes a specific type of a non-profit-making organization which is a "parent centre". The family centre Slunečnice is one of these: it is an organization that provides comprehensive services for families. In this paper, I am trying to refer to the steps that led the organization to this aiming - I describe its mission, values and goals. In the description of the specific services it is evident how the organization puts its mission, goals and values into practice. HateFree Culture: The Importance of Agonistic Dialogue in mitigating Islamophobia
Nováková, Dora ; Čada, Karel (advisor) ; Frantová, Veronika (referee)
The thesis HateFree Culture: The importance of agonistic dialogue in mitigating Islamophobia is a case study of the Czech government's campaign against hate crime - HateFree Culture. The thesis deals with the current phenomenon of Islamophobia and identifies how the HateFree Culture initiative works with the topic of Islam in an attempt to alleviate Islamophobic manifestations in society. It examines the extent to which the primary tool of this campaign, a moderated Facebook discussion, can affect Islamophobic expressions and identifies the link between this discussion and deliberative forums. The thesis shows that the various techniques used in the project can positively influence the way in which the topic is discussed and can thus progressively lead to a reduction in the manifestations of Islamophobia in society. This process is discussed in relation to the theory of deliberative democracy. However, it also concerns the theory of agonistic pluralism and an agonistic dialogue. The thesis finds that the aim of the project is promoting the knowledge of Islam and Muslims that could lead to a better mutual understanding, but also to the cultivation of a conflict that is related to the topic in order to transform its character into a less harmful one. HateFree Culture is thus shown as an agonistic...
The opinions of Czech students on the social and cultural integration of migrants
Voňavková, Lucie ; Kabele, Jiří (advisor) ; Frantová, Veronika (referee)
In my thesis I deal with social integration of immigrants in the Czech Republic. This topic interests me primarily from the perspective of Czech students. In the theoretical part of my thesis first I define integration and its three main models, and describe their development. The next section I devote to social integration and its four dimensions. In the next two sections I describe migration development and related migration policy of the Czech Republic to outline the transformation of Czech Republic from emigration to immigration character. After defining the important concepts and theoretical foundations I present my research probe that explores the views of Kladno's students to immigrants, their cultural and interactive social integration. For this probe I selected quantitative survey. I wanted to involve as many students as possible. In this part of my work I introduce my research questions and hypotheses, methodological issues and describe the structure of the questionnaire. In this part are provided also previous studies. Finally I evaluate the results of my probe.
Parenting in the context of cultural inequalities: how parents justify their child-rearing strategies
Šulcová, Zuzana ; Frantová, Veronika (advisor) ; Hájek, Martin (referee)
This thesis is written from the perspective of cultural sociology and focuses on middle-class parents and justification of their child-rearing decisions. It describes how parents choose and evaluate the institutions their children spend time at, how they "other" parents with different values and how they relate to concerted cultivation - a type of parenting style which currently dominates the middle-class context. This parenting style (or ideal) puts a great deal of pressure on middle-class parents and it causes a symbolic war among them: a war for acknowledgment and a certain position in the cultural space. This thesis describes who the participants "other", which child-rearing strategies participants approve of, what values are crucial for them and what problems they deal with. Furthermore, four main differences between the participants' approach and the concerted cultivation approach were identified: emphasis on friendship, emphasis on balance between activities and rest, emphasis on fitting in with the majority and emphasis on approval of certain authoritarian methods such as imposing punishments, applying restrictions and issuing directives.

J.C. Alexander's symbolic code of civil society: the problem of rationalization
Frantová, Veronika ; Balon, Jan (advisor) ; Alieva, Dilbar (referee) ; Szaló, Csaba (referee)
This thesis elaborates on the concept of a binary symbolic code of civil society by Jeffrey C. Alexander and Philip Smith and through this narrowly-focused analysis intends to contribute to a wider debate on the role of emotionality and rationality in the public space. Alexander is one of the few who has managed to make a breakthrough with the new paradigm in the last decades of social theory development. However, institutionalization of a "Strong Program in Cultural Sociology" without adequate reflection on its epistemological foundations bears the risk of cultural sociology becoming a hidden representative of functionalist ideology instead of a critical discipline. I identify and elaborate several key theoretical questions regarding the concept of a binary symbolic code: systemic diferentiation and relative autonomy of civil sphere; relative autonomy of culture and actor-structure dilemma; the question of a position of symbolic code among other interpretive tools of cultural sociology; universality of symbolic code; normativity and the role of power relations. Following Marek Skovajsa, I try to test the possibilities of the code in the Czech public sphere. In two case studies - of dissident discourse and the discourse of local referendums - I show that the structure of Czech civil society agree with...
Mushrooms and Slag Heaps: Symbolic Processes and Practices of Group Boundaries Defining in Kukolice
Hrčková, Jana ; Grygar, Jakub (advisor) ; Frantová, Veronika (referee)
Presented paper is concerned with the issue of symbolic processes and practices used for creation of group boundaries of Kukolice community. The village inhabitants use various images and narratives in order to enact the boundaries in relation to the neighbouring Polish group. The main objective of the work is to analyze and understand the aforementioned practices. The paper uses theoretical background based on Cohen's Symbolic Construction of Community, Said's Orientalism and Elias's foreword to the Established and the Outsiders to interpret and analyze the empirical data. The research was carried out in a village inhabited by 390 people, located on the border with Poland in Frydlant area. Unstructured interviews, participant observations and analyses of media and official documents were mostly used during the research. Over the course of the analysis, Poles seem to merge with the images of mine and power plant, dirt, poverty and lesser degree of civilization that are all ascribed to the Polish territory behind the border, following Taussig's concept of mimetic faculty.
