Mythology and ideology of "children's" semantic codes in the magazine Sluníčko before and after year 1989
Smrčková, Andrea ; Švec, Luboš (referee) ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor)
Diploma thesis "Mythology and ideology of "children's" semantic codes in the magazine Sluníčko before and after year 1989" deals with a specific way of construction of reality. We worked with two volumes, No. 20 and 40. Theoretic part deals with the description of main method - semiotic analysis, but also with psychological development of a child, genres intended for a child reader and with the transformation of mythology. We tried to detect myths connected with some topics (family, festival, education, work and differences among people). We carried out semiotic analysis based on the Barthes' theory of mythology and ideology. We studied what happens with the parts of sign in the prime system, if they move into to the secondary system. Barthes called this system metalanguage or also a mythological system. Another chapter deals with advertising that appeared in volume 40. According to the primary hypotheses there aren't changes in mythology and ideology. After we had analysed texts and also some pictures, we recognized that our inquests aren't definite. The myth has not been transformed only in the event of some subjects (e.g. family); changes in mythology are connected with an ideological transformation (e.g. subjects work and festival). An upswing of the radical left in Finland in connection with the occupation of Czechoslovakia in August 1968. The movement of taistolaiset - Brezhnev's useful daydreamers
I v samotném Finsku si získávají taistovci svou pozornost postupně a teprve v posledním desetiletí.
"You Don't Perform Theatre in a Graveyard." Public Critism and Resistance in the Vilna Ghetto, 1941 - 1943.
Nationality Policy in Soviet Karelia, 1920-1935
Šebesta, Adam ; Švec, Luboš (advisor) ; Litera, Bohuslav (referee)
Diploma thesis "Nationality policy in Soviet Karelia, 1920-1935 " deals with the bolshevik experiment of governing a multinational empire on the example of eastern Karelia in the inter-war period. The paper examines the specific aspects of Karelia's development in contrast with the central nationality policies. Unique region with Finnish communist emigrants as leaders serves as an essence of understanding the nationality policies of the USSR. In search of a large-scale support of all the Russia's peoples the bolsheviks opted for a pragmatic policy of national concessions. The creation of autonomous Karelia was only possible because of a number of factors. Thanks to the policy of building national cadres, the Soviets were temporarily inclined towards regional administration. The success of Tartu peace negotiations was determined by solving the Karelian question and autonomous Karelia seemed to have been just the answer to Finnish demands. The region was supposed to become a showcase of socialism and friendship of the peoples. The Finnish bolsheviks were up to this challenge. Apart from the actual nationality policy in Karelia, the thesis also deals with the factors determining the level of independence such as economic policies and the dependence on center, language and education questions and challenges to...
The Social Transformation of Former "Closed Cities" in Estonia. Case-study of Paldiski and Sillamae
Batorova, Darima ; Švec, Luboš (advisor) ; Šír, Jan (referee)
The project will focus on analytical and comparative studies of social and economical structure transformations in "closed cities" (ZATO) and in the former military cities in Estonia. The main subjects of this comparative study are former <closed cities> Paldiski and Sillamae. Closed cities were characterized by limited communication with outside environment and by the lack of exchange of information. The state institutions, such as police or Public Prosecutor's Office, had extended legal power there. These and other restrictive boundaries were offset by state benefits and by better abundant supplies for the city. The risk factor of local economy was the military focus in exchange for self sustainability. After the collapse of the USSR and the loss of state fundings these cities fell into a deep social and economical crisis, which is needed to overcome until now The main question of that project is if the post-soviet development of those cities has different or common elements and if in a specific way of transformation of those cities exist.

Karafiátová, Sylva ; Irmanová, Eva (advisor) ; Švec, Luboš (referee)
Diploma thesis Slovak Political Emigration on the Way to the Dissolution of Czechoslovakia: The Activity of the Christian Democratically Oriented Slovak Exiles deals with the political activity of the Slovaks living abroad, their relations to the common state of Slovaks and Czechs and their aspiration to influence this state as well as the coexistence of the above named nations. The thesis points out the autonomist tradition of the Slovak emigration (from the turn of the 19th and 20th century) and touches the main points of the Slovak life abroad and all the Slovak exile till the end of the World War II. It follows the main streams of the Slovak postwar political emigration, which were formed into three specific emigration waves in the 1945, 1948 and 1968 years. It focuses primarily on the development and the external and internal aspects of the Slovak exile after 1968. The main emphasis is given to the activities of the Christian democratically oriented Slovak exiles (mostly living in Europe, exiles of the year 1968 an later) approximately in 1989- 1993 and their program to establish the exile Slovak Christian democratic club (party), which turned out to take share in the formation of the homeland Christian democratic party and the transformation of the political and social life in Slovakia after November...
Emanuel Voska in Czechoslovak independence movement in the First World War: espionage and propaganda
Hájková, Dagmar ; Kvaček, Robert (advisor) ; Švec, Luboš (referee) ; Galandauer, Jan (referee)
The study deals with the activities of Emanuel Voska, an American Czech, during the First World War from the point of view of the Czechoslovak resistance movement abroad, propaganda, intelligence services and the immigrant associations. After the First World War, an image was created of Voska as the first Czech spy and one of the foremost associates of T. G. Masaryk. The study puts the image into a sharper relief and tries to answer the question how important were Voska's activities during the war in the context of the resistance movement abroad and what was his actual merit in the process of creation of independent Czechoslovak state. Voska left for America when he was 19 years old. He tried to make his name in business as well as in the immigrants associations, in which he presented himself as a freethinker, Sokol and left wing radical. His journey to Europe in 1914 when he contacted Masaryk and Wickam Steed placed him in a good position with regard to communications between the immigrant societies in the USA, the representatives of the Allies and the initial exile centre in Europe. After his return to USA, Voska became a leading representative of an association named "Bohemian National Alliance" which aimed to achieve the break-up of Austria-Hungary as well as an independent state of Czechs and Slovaks....
Position of the Polish Minority in Contemporary Lithuania
Andrlík, Jan ; Hnízdo, Bořivoj (advisor) ; Švec, Luboš (referee)
The thesis deals with political aspects of the situation of the Polish minority in the contemporary Republic of Lithuania. Basis and practice of the Lithuanian ethnic and language policy, relevant sociodemographic features of the Polish minority, and their interaction within the political system, as manifested by the patterns of Polish minority mobilization and representation in the political structures, are successively analyzed in mutual cohesion. A study of the political dimension of the Lithuanian Poles' and the Polish kin-state's interrelationship together with a brief comparison of their situation with kin minorities in Belarus and Ukraine contextualize the analysis. In spite of both comparatively very good endogenous resources and the formally non-discriminatory political practice of the Lithuanian state, the thesis documents Polish minority's underrepresentation within the political system, as caused by the political opportunity structures. Aggregation and articulation of Polish minority interests in contemporary Lithuania fully comply with conventional patterns in institutionalized democracies. However, the findings of the thesis contradict the presumption of eventual weakening of the Lithuanian-Polish ethnic cleavage within the political system, and, more to the contrary, point to proofs of actual...
