The thesis Dr. Jan Herben - Journalist and Politician (1857-1936) maps the life of this distinguished journalist and politician of the late 19th and early 20th centuries from his studies till the end of his professional career. It is based on literature about Jan Herben or about the period of turn of the century, on periodicals of that time, and archive materials found in the Museum of Czech Literature in Prague and in Herben's summer house in Hostišov. It focuses mainly on the period of publishing the Čas periodical which under Dr. Jan Herben became the main daily of the Realist Party of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, on affairs linked to the publication of Čas, including the disputes over the authenticity of two ostensible early medieval Czech manuscripts, a wave of protests following publication of the first editorial Our Two Questions by Hubert Gordon Shauer, the Hilsner affair, or Dr. Jan Herben's accusation of embezzlement of funds collected for orphans in the town of Most. The thesis also briefly describes Herben's post-war journalistic career in Lidové noviny daily, in the humour weekly Nebojsa and in Národní práce daily, his career as a writer as well as a politician, MP and Senator. Media (Re)Construction of Collective Memory: October and November as a Support for the Contemporary Czech National Identity

The bachelor thesis "Media (Re)Construction of Collective Memory: October and November as a Support for the Contemporary Czech National Identity" focuses on relation between mass media, collective memory and national identity. In accordance with social constructionism theory, the terms collective memory and national identity are understood as social constructs whereas mass media is considered to be one of the social construction agents. The aim of this work is to analyse a variety of media interpretations on significant Czech history events - October 28, 1918 and November 17, 1989. Analysed are newspaper commentaries published in order to commemorate these events during the eleven- year period from 1998 to 2009. As a resource for the analysis I have chosen three Czech daily newspapers - Hospodářské noviny, Lidové noviny and Mladá fronta DNES. The research method used is media qualitative content analysis. The work objective is to examine the typical media discourses based on national history which are constructed in a way to support contemporary Czech national identity. Not only does this thesis consist of research, it also includes methodology and theoretical framework.

Czechoslovak Exile Resistance Movement in 1918 from the View of the Realistic Theorie

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to clarify the role played by units of the Czechoslovak Legion in recognition of the Czechoslovak Foreign Resistance Movement by the Entente Powers. For the formulation of hypotheses were used postulates of classical realism by H. Morgenthau that highlight the crucial role of military force in assessing the relevance of international political actors. Therefore, the empirical part of this study firstly describes the evolution of military units that were formed immediately after the outbreak of war on the initiative of Czech and Slovak compatriots abroad. The political leadership of Czechoslovak Independence Movement after a dispute about the goals and means of resistance formed in the year 1916 to the Czechoslovak National Council. However, Entente Powers had until mid- 1918 interest in maintaining the Austro-Hungarian Empire , which they considered as an important element of the balance of power in Central Europe. The turning point in their thinking occurred in connection with the revolt of the Czechoslovak Legions in Russia against the Bolsheviks in May 1918. Forming of identity through history lessons The description of Czech-Slovak relations since the Middle Ages to the present in textbooks of the 20th century

This bachelor thesis deals with an analysis of Czech history textbooks that were used in schools in Czechoslovakia during the years 1918-1939 and years 1945-1989. A chosen sample of textbooks is analysed from the perspective of Czech-Slovak relations and of the influence of czechoslovakism on making of history school text. The thesis is based on the assumption that history education takes a signifiant part in making of one's identity. The first part of this thesis describes the theoretical resources, the second the specific conclusions and examples of analysis of the historical sources. Special attention is payed to the theory of czechoslovakism, its historical evolution and its echo in historiography. The topics of the analytic part are husittism, national revival and formation of Czechoslovakia.
