The bachelor thesis consists of two parts. The first part is a translation of selected chapters from the book written by Tony Parker The Violence of Our Lives: Interviews with Life- Sentence Prisoners in America, which was published in London in 1996 by HarperCollins Publishers. The second part of this thesis is a commentary on the translation based on Christiane Nord's model of translation analysis. The commentary includes a translation analysis; it focuses according to relevance on extratextual and intratextual factors and on various translation problems that occurred in the process. The commentary describes strategies for dealing with the problems as well as the typology of translation shifts that occurs in the target text. It concludes that the text is expressive and embedded in the source culture.

The subject of bachelor thesis is work of Russian writer Vladimir Sorokin. This thesis focuses on translation and common problems associated with it. It's divided into two coherent parts. First one is devoted to the translation alone and second contains my personal commentary, both to the original and translated text. Goal of this thesis is to highlight author's specific style of writting and his expressions, thus creating preconditions for the possible future translation of selected book. The thesis consists of a Czech translation of the first chapter, Introductory: Language Defined, from Language: An Introduction to the Study of Speech (New York: 1921, Harcourt, Brace and Company) by Edward Sapir and of a commentary on the translation. The commentary consists of a translation analysis of the source text, typology of translation problems and their solutions, and typology of translation shifts. The translation method was chosen based on the analysis, which was based on the method of Ch. Nord. The main objective of the translation was to preserve the informative function of the source text and it's style with regard to the documentary function of the translation and the conventions and constraints of the target language.

This master's thesis consists of a Czech language translation and commentary for selected chapters of Dans l'enfer des tournantes, an autobiography by Samira Bellil, a French author of Algerian descent. The commentary is divided into two parts: a presentation of literature written by French authors of Maghrebi descent, the so-called beurs, the language they use in literature and reception of their works; and an analysis of the source text and its reception, the problems encountered during the process of translation and their solutions as well as the chosen translation method. The focus of this work is the translation of two articles from Investigating Firefly and Serenity: Science Fiction on the Frontier, an anthology of essays and articles from various authors and researches specializing in the humanities. An annotation of the translation from the perspective of translation theory forms the second part of this work: it contains the original text analysis based on the model of Christiane Nord, and describes the translation method and problems as well as their solutions and the typology of translation shifts. This bachelor thesis comprises a translation of a part of a book called Translation and Identity by Michael Cronin, published in 2006 and a commentary on the translation. The commentary includes translation analysis of the original text, examples of translation problems with solutions and typology of translation shifts. The analysis was based on the model of Ch. Nord and the translation method was inspired by translation theory of J. Levý and partly also by the theory of P. Newmark. The translation shifts were based on the theory of A. Popovič. The translated text inquires into the interconnection of the modern and constantly changing society. It looks at the understanding of the concept of cosmopolitanism throughout the history from the point of view of several cosmopolitan theories and it studies the influence the understanding has on people's behaviour. It puts into context concepts of cosmopolitanism, identity and translation and it highlights the role of translation as an irreplaceable "bridge" which mediates relationship of the global world and influences how we see individuals and groups whether it is on the level of ethnic, national or an international society. This bachelor thesis has two basic parts. The first part sets to produce a function translation. The basic literature which is the most important for this thesis is the Art of Translation by Jiří Levý. The reason is the fact that my translation method is based on this book. The second part of this bachelor thesis is the commentary to this translation. It is well known that the bachelor thesis is not able to mention all problems which we can meet in a translation.
