Abstract The first part of this diploma thesis "Medium Chain Fatty Acids in Sports Nutrition" focuses on a literature research of topics regarding rational nutrition and its history, the importance of fats in nutrition, a more detailed review of fats in sports nutrition. It also describes the impact of medium-chain fatty acids (MCTs) on the human body and on performance in sport. The practical part of the work focused on the design of a suitable methodology for the determination of fatty acids and the analysis of available MCT-containing dietary supplements by using gas chromatography. Based on the measurement results, the fatty acid profile of the samples was evaluated, a statistical evaluation was performed and the measurement results were compared with the nutritional information of the products as labelled on the product packaging. The diploma thesis also included a questionnaire that was designed for a general audience in order to determine the knowledge of supplements and the popularity of dietary supplements containing MCTs. The aim of this thesis was to provide as comprehensive an overview as possible of medium chain fatty acids and their impact in sports nutrition by using a various information sources, and to determine whether respondents had an overview of MCTs based on the questionnaire and to conduct an analysis of fatty acids in MCT-containing products.
Nutritional deficiences in vegan endurance athletes
Knížková, Šárka ; Heniková, Marina (advisor) ; Koudelková, Kateřina (referee)
Aim: This study aimed to investigate whether vegan endurance athletes, specifically runners, experience nutritional deficiencies due to a purely plant-based diet. Partial goals were set to evaluate whether these athletes have sufficient energy intake and receive adequate macronutrients and risky micronutrients. Methods: The research was conducted as a pilot study for the extensive European project VEGANScreener. Based on the completed questionnaire and meeting the criteria, 11 participants (n = 11) were selected. The subjects underwent body composition analysis using bioimpedance, their resting energy expenditure was measured by indirect calorimetry, and blood was taken. The subjects then performed a 4-day food record (self-reported 4-day Dietary Record), which was analysed using new software. The complete dietary record was analysed for only eight subjects (n = 8). Nutritional data were analysed using the left-sided Mann- Whitney U test, which belongs to the group of non-parametric tests. The test was conducted at a significance level of α = 0.05. Results: The average BMI of the subjects was 20.87 ± 1.58 kg/m2. Two subjects (n = 2) had a lower body fat percentage than is adequate. The biochemical blood test results indicated a possible vitamin D and iron deficiency. When comparing actual energy...
The issue of vitamin D in elite sport
Káchová, Nikola ; Dostal, Jiří (advisor) ; Kalendová, Barbora (referee)
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that can be synthesized in the skin after exposure to sunlight or obtained through food or supplements. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 14 days of sun exposure in an area with higher levels of UV radiation (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) on vitamin D concentrations in a selected group of water slalom athletes and to further evaluate the changes in concentrations after a further 14 and 30 days after return. Data for the study were obtained by using four blood draws and comparing the average vitamin D concentration between the blood draws. Eleven elite athletes aged 18-35 years who were not taking vitamin D supplements participated in the study. The results showed that before the intervention, the athletes had average vitamin D levels lower (69.4 nmol/l) than the lower reference limit set at 75 nmol/l. Exposure to sunlight for 14 days resulted in a significant increase in vitamin D concentration, with an average increase of 10.8 nmol/l in the study group. Upon return to the Czech Republic, the vitamin D level increased slightly by an average of 0.7 nmol/l for 14 days, but this increase was not statistically significant compared to the previous sampling. After 30 days of stay, the vitamin D level decreased on average by 1.3 nmol/l. This result...

Ondráčková, Eliška ; Kinkorová, Ivana (advisor) ; Macas, Tomáš (referee)
Title: Sports nutrition supplements and their use among junior and senior rowers in Czech Republic Objectives: The main aim of this thesis is to compare the use of sports nutrition supplements in junior and senior rowers categories in the Czech Republic. Methods: In this thesis, a comparative study was used in which an online survey method was used in the research. Data was collected using a survey that participants completed independently online. The survey was placed in a Google forms environment. The link to the survey was disseminated among the research participants through social networking sites. Results: The results of the survey showed that 75 % of the respondents use sports nutrition supplements, with almost half of them using them more than once a week between 2 and 5 years. The required number of junior rowers did not participate in the survey, so we can assume that there are more rowers in the senior category than in the junior category. For this reason, the results of the survey were processed on rowers in general. The respondents use sports nutrition supplements most in the preparation period, and the most used supplements are protein preparations. The most frequently described observed effects of sports nutrition supplements are both a better feeling of performance and a feeling of...

The practical part analyses and evaluates the dietary habits of Czech cross- country skiers and biathletes of youth and junior categories during the preparatory phase, focusing on food composition, the ratio of individual nutrients, use of nutritional supplements and fluid intake. Methods: Eighteen men and thirteen women participated in the study. It was conducted via a questionnaire based on open-ended questions. The questionnaire focused on information about the male and female respondents necessary to conduct the research, their dietary intake, including fluids, nutritional supplements, and physical activity over a two-week period. Results: Most athletes, especially women, ingest insufficient dietary energy compared to their estimated energy expenditure. They consume most of their calories in the latter part of the day, most at dinner. Of the macronutrients ingested, only the amount of carbohydrate is insufficient. In contrast, the amount of protein is above the recommended amount for most men and women. Despite the fact that endurance sportsmen and women need a higher fluid intake...
