Hejbal, Dominik ; Halada, Jan (advisor) ; Trunečka, Ondřej (referee)
The paper focuses on the image of the Czech first league football coaches in national dailies and their websites. The researched materials are daily prints and web articles from the seasons 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 of Sport and Mlada fronta DNES. Sport is the only one Czech sport focused daily. Mlada fronta DNES is general daily, which has the most of sport's texts. The theses are also focused on the online versions iDNES.cz and iSport.cz. The chosen period was very compelling because of causes on the Czech clubs benches. A well-known Spartan František Straka agreed to an offer by the all-time rival Slavia Prague. Jaroslav Hřebík came back to Sparta Prague to his third deal in this club. Pavel Vrba achieved the most successful season in the history of Viktoria Pilsen. Petr Uličný who holds the record of the coached matches in the separate Czech league won his first trophy just in the end of his career and has saved Sigma Olomouc in the league. Luboš Kozel promoted Dukla to the Gambrinus League after 17 years, and his team was surprisingly successful. The text uses the qualitatitve methods and decides differences between two dailies. Velikovská, Tereza ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
The thesis "Media image of nine ice hockey world championships in the Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic in the contemporary press" focuses on reporting on nine ice hockey world championships hosted by the Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic in media. This is done by qualitative analysis of articles in the contemporary press in both specialized sports daily or weekly papers and general papers. The goal of this thesis is to prove how the style of reporting changed since the first championship in 1933 through seven decades to the last one in 2004. Apart from analyzing the degree and target of critique and style of reporting, it also focuses on the influence of current political climate and propaganda in the period between world wars, after the World War II, 1968 Russian occupation and shortly after the Velvet revolution. The reporting period was set at one month before the start of each tournament and two weeks after it's end. In case of 1933 and 1938 championships, the thesis analyzes the following papers: Rudé právo, České slovo, Národní politika. In later years: Československý sport, Mladá fronta, Rudé právo, Svobodné slovo (all daily), Stadión and Gól (both weekly). After the Velvet revolution: Sport, Právo, MF Dnes (all daily). The analysis focuses mostly on the content of the reporting.
Beginnings of czech sport journalism at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. Sport as a part of czech press.
Lukšů, David ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Waic, Marek (referee) ; Sekot, Aleš (referee)
This dissertation is the very first scholarly text to bring a wider perspective on the genesis of Czech sport journalism, starting with its beginnings in the latter half of the 1800's and extending to the year of 1918, when this profession became an independent branch of the newspaper business. Given the paucity of original literature, the present work is based primarily on the study of period newspapers and archival materials, employing mainly the direct and the indirect methods of historiography. The main purpose of it was to describe the formation of the discipline of sport journalism in the broader context of the Czech society, sports and media, rather than regarding it as an independent, isolated process. The constituent parts of this dissertation, which renders the dawn of Czech sport journalism, include the most important titles of the day as well as the key personalities in the publishing and journalism of the period, the issue of sport reportage within the established political press, and also the genesis of the professions of sport journalist and sport photographer. The chapters that place the main theme within a wider historical context compare the brief description of the evolution of sport journalism in the Czech lands to the origins of sport journalism in other countries (Great Britain, USA,...

Periodical Czechoslovakian sport was established in 1953. The journal was established by State Committee for Physical Education and Sport. The periodical was a main platform for Physical Education organization until 1989. The Czechoslovakian sport was one of the central media of the communist regime. It was censored and it was also a platform for propaganda. The journal developed and made a progress over the years. Firstly, the Czechoslovakian sport was published twice a week, but eventually it became a daily. In fact, it was one of the top ten dailies in Czechoslovakia. The newspaper circulation was 195 000 copies in 1988. After the velvet revolution the Czechoslovakian sport was transformed to daily Sport. This journal has been published by Ringier ČR.
COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE APPROACH TOWARDS THE OLYMPIC VICTORIES OF E. ZÁTOPEK AND V. CASLAVSKA IN THE CONTEMPORARY PRESS
Velikovská, Tereza ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Trunečková, Ludmila (referee)
This bachelor thesis Comparative analysis of the approach towards the Olympic victories of Emil Zátopek and Věra Čáslavská in the contemporary press focuses on the comparison of different ways the press informed about the Olympic victories of two successful Czech athletes, Emil Zátopek and Věra Čáslavská, using analysis and comparison in articles of four contemporary daily newspapers regarding their victories and Olympic games in general. Using these articles, the goal of the thesis is to prove that Olympic victories of Emil Zátopek were misused by the communist regime as a tool for propaganda, influencing the quality and objectivity of sports news. In 1960s, at a time when the regime strictness loosened, the hypothesis concludes that informing about the victories of Věra Čáslavská was significantly less influenced by the propaganda. The observed period starts two weeks ahead of the start of the Olympics and ends one month after its end. The thesis analyses articles in Rudé právo, Mladá fronta and Svobodné slovo. In Věra Čáslavská's case, Československý sport is also included. The analysis is focused mainly on the actual content, mentioning also some of the published photographs.

Suchan, Jan ; Moravec, Václav (advisor) ; Trunečka, Ondřej (referee)
Diploma thesis "Sport journalists as press secretaries of sportsmen or sport clubs - ethical issue" deals with the problem of sport journalists who work for sportsmen, sport clubs or associations at the same time, often as press secretaries, authors of articles on their websites or press conference organizers and presenters. This could be considered as a conflict of interest and can affect his/her work for media, for example agenda setting or content of the stories. This thesis focuses on two main problems: how Czech codes of ethics deal with conflict of interest and how editors-in-chief of sport columns think about conflict of interest. The last part of this thesis is a case study of selected sport journalist who is in conflict of interest.
The Hero of Totalitarian Media: The Comparative Analysis of Emil Zátopek's Olympic Victories (1948, 1952)
Dušek, Petr ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Kraus, Jiří (referee)
Rigorous thesis "The Hero of Totalitarian Media: The Comparative Analysis of Emil Zátopek's Olympic Victories (1948, 1952)" deals with propaganda in the sports journalism. Its aim is to evaluate how the Czechoslovak press reported about successes of one of the best domestic athlet Emil Zatopek at the Olympic Games in London and Helsinki. I defined a hypothesis, based on specialized literature and observation, that journalists exploited Zatopek's triumphs for propagandistic reasons, and presented the successful athlet as a socialist hero. I verified this hypothesis by means of quantitative content analysis of the journals Rude pravo and Lidova demokracie. I defined two secondary hypothesis as well: The news coverage of the Olympic Games in 1952 was more propagandistically damaged than the Olympic Games in 1948, and the news coverage by Rude pravo of both Olympic Games was more propagandistically damaged than by Lidova demokracie. In the analysis I measure the propagandistic damage of the articles, the photos and the representations of Emil Zatopek. The whole research has a deep theoretical background, which includes a definition of propaganda, an outline of the cultural policy 1948-1952, and a definition of the "hero" concept based on different conceptions from both sides of the Iron Curtain.
The sports journalist and his social role: comparative perspective
MLS, Martin
The subject of the theses is sports journalism, the part of Czech media sphere slightly neglected by academics. The main focus is on Czech sports journalists (without consideration of their specific professional interest) and their social role. This paper has sociological character and its goal is to compare Czech sports journalism in two periods - during the period of ´propagandistic-promotion role´ of media defined politically (primarily by Communist Party) before 1989 and during contemporary period of commercialized and entertaining media - and to compare these two periods. The text can be understood as a contribution to the role of media within the framework of out-of-school education. Theses also contains the analysis of sports journalists role before 1989 and today: only aspect of sports journalists business which did not changed during last twenty years is the essence of their profession. One of two main methods used in this paper is qualitative analysis of questionnaires collected in an email survey: we could compare working conditions and profession opinions of five regional sports journalists. The text also offers professional portraits of respondents which are based the interpretation of their answers. These answers were interpreted by the author from the comparative perspective. Findings and conclusions were used for developing the typology of sports journalists which contains five genuine types of sports journalists. All types are described from several angles and to each type one respondent of our research is allocated as a representative. At the end, author offers critical evaluation of the typology and possibilities of future work on the topic of sports journalism.
