Written expression of pupils with hearing impairment educated in schools for the hearing impaired

This master's thesis is devoted to the topic of written expressions of students with hearing impairment educated at schools for the hearing impaired. This master's thesis consists of a theoretical part and a practical part. The theoretical part is devoted to the knowledge we have available about this topic both in domestic and foreign literature. Specifically, it deals with topics such as the language and communication of people with hearing impairments, the teaching of pupils with hearing impairments with a focus on language teaching, especially the Czech language and the literacy of people with hearing impairments. The practical part of the thesis is devoted to a research investigation, the aim of which was to describe the differences between the texts of hearing impaired pupils educated in schools for the hearing impaired and the texts of intact pupils educated in mainstream schools. As part of the research investigation, the texts of pupils with hearing impairment and the texts of intact pupils were obtained, while both groups were given identical assignments. These texts were further analyzed and compared in terms of their scope, structure and content and subsequently errors were found in them, which were further categorized and described. Written Texts of Czech Deaf

The topic of the dissertation is the communication of the deaf in written Czech. The theoretical part presents the studies of written Czech for the deaf which have been carried out in the Czech Republic so far, considers the causes of difficulties the deaf encounter when making Czech written texts, and deals with the position of written Czech in the education of the deaf. The next part is devoted to the Czech sign language, the characteristics of its specifics and its role in the communication and education of deaf pupils, especially in connection with the currently valid legislation. Attention is also focused on the components and construction of narrative texts and on the acquisition of narrative competencies in spoken and sign languages. The research part is focused on the qualitative analysis of narrative texts in Czech, the authors of which are deaf pupils of two primary schools for the hearing impaired aged 14 to 16, and which were created on the basis of a picture story. As part of the analysis of written narratives, attention is focused on the specific features which make the written texts of the deaf different from the texts written by hearing Czechs. Cause and effect in written Czech of the Czech Deaf

This thesis focuses on how the cause and the effect are expressed in the written Czech texts of Czech deaf people (i. e. those, who don't have full access to spoken language due to their hearing loss). The first part of the thesis, based on Czech grammar books, presents the meaning of terms cause and effect, or causal and consequential relationships, and it attempts to summarize the language tools, by which are these relationships expressed in Czech. The second part of the thesis is devoted to the analysis of the texts written by Czech deaf people and attempts to compare the linguistic means used in texts of the deaf people with the linguistic means used by the Czech hearing majority. The analysed material consists of 1 310 statements containing expressions of cause and effect, which are excerpted from texts of 167 deaf authors. The analysed material contains both school assignments, which deaf students provided directly for analysis included in this thesis, and the texts included in the corpus DEAF. The description and analysis of the written texts puts emphasis on linguistic means and ways of expressing cause and effect that differ from the commonly used language and on probable origins of these differences, especially on possible interferences from the Czech Sign Language.

The Communication of Teachers in the Secondary Schools for Hearing impaired in Czech Republic

This diploma thesis deals, in a broader sense, with classroom interaction betwen students and history teachers at secondary schools for hearing impaired in the Czech Republic. In a narrower sense, it examines a pattern of teacher's language behaviour and his/her motivation when choosing relevant language means during his/her history classes. The work consists of two parts - theoretical specialized background, and practical research. The theoretical part gives an overview of the relevant specialized terminology used in the Czech Republic and abroad, as well as a short insight into the development of classroom interaction between a student and a teacher at special schools and pays attention to the developmental linguo-didactic aspects in the Czech schools for hearing impaired. The practical part uses qualitative research as a means of a research method. I have observed and filmed history classes at three secondary schools for hearing impaired. As my research interests laid within the above mentioned research technique, I did not assess teaching methodology of the teachers. I focused mainly on the form of teacher's communication. The aim is to investigate connecting words in spoken and written language, their use in text and links with other words, compare the use of the coupling term in written and spoken Czech language. Theoretical basis for master's thesis is based on several works which are devoted to this issue, either in whole or in dealing with some of its parts. But the major outline of work is driven by the Czech National Corpus (hereafter CNC), namely the corpora SYN2005 and ORAL2008. First chapter deals with CNC and coupling expressions in general, second deals with secondary linking conjunctions, their use in text types and surrounding words.
