Fasting and its importance for spiritual and personality development

The thesis deals with the influence of fasting on the personality development of man. The theoretical part characterizes diet and fasting. It looks at fasting through the eyes of the world´s most important religions, explains their motivation, practices and goals. Furthermore, it describes the mental and spiritual development of personality from the perspective of psychology and philosophy, putting it in context with the teaching profession. The practical part confirms the influence of fasting on the respondens. They prove the positive impact of fasting not only on health, the maturation of the human personality and transcendental beliefs, but also on the acceptance of everything that surrounds us and what we are a part of.
Muslim holidays

The thesis called "Muslim holidays" provides the reader with an overview of selected Islamic holidays that are frequently celebrated in the Islamic society. Its primary goal is to look into the lives of young Muslims and to compare how this generation perceives these celebrations, especially the feast of Ramadan, what factors influence their behaviour and to which extent they stick to the traditional teaching of Islam. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part is a theoretical part and focuses on the origin of Islam religion and its main principles. Also, public and family holidays of Islam are introduced. Nevertheless, the main focus is on the feast of Ramadan and different aspects of its celebrations. The second, practical part comprises of qualitative research. The main methods and objectives of the research are defined in this part and also, the criteria for the choice of respondents and the respondents themselves are introduced. In the conclusion, knowledge that has been achieved is described.
Jesus and Fasting

This work deals with the topic of fasting and integrates fasting into context of the Holy Scriptures. It seeks to bring an overview of the fasting passage in the Old and New Testament. It names the reasons and uncovers the internal and external motivations of the fasting. It follows fasting as a line running from Old Testament to New Testament times, continues in the time of the apostolic church. It mediates the experiences of fasting practice of the churchs' Fathers in the time of patristic period in reference to the present time. The focus of the work is on the fast of Jesus. Selected extracts are submitted and commented with the help of professional literature with the intention of restore the perception of the fasting as one of available means of deeping the spiritual life.
Long fasting and its effects on athletic performance

TITLE: Long fasting and its effects on athletic performance AUTHOR: Vít Uher DEPARTMENT: Katedra tělesné výchovy SUPERVISOR: PhDr. Martin Dlouhý, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: The main purpose of this these is to introduce the reader to the issue of long fasting with zero calorie intake and to find out how a ten-day fasting period will affect athletic performance. I did the experiment on myself, especially by monitoring the best possible performances in the chosen exercise disciplines. In the second part of the research, I focused on the analysis and comparison of these results with the performance before the start of fasting. The result of the experiment was an average affect on athletic performance in the range of 4.93 %, except for the flexibility rate, which increased by 100 %. Hunger strike as a political weapon in the contemporary India

The thesis will be discussing the concept of hunger strikes, that in the world, especially in Indian subcontinent serve as the way of political weapon. The work is divided into four parts linked with each other. The first chapter presents the basic division of hunger strikes' causes. From fasts, that can play the role of healthy or religious act to a hunger strike as the social protest against repression from higher posts of hierarchy. The second and also the key chapter presents the most important Indian thinker throughout the 20th century, M. K. Gandhi, who is known by his unprecedented number of fasts and hunger strikes, mainly with political background. He had created and moreover incorporated his own philosophy, which is also included into his hunger strike as a non-violent weapon. The third and at the same time the vastest chapter of my work contains the most interesting Indian hunger strike examples after Gandhi's death. The last chapter briefly informs about the complete hunger strike transformation and depicts the most outstanding hunger strikes' mistakes and reasons of failure consequences.
The Self-imposed Starvation

This bachelor's thesis deals with different approaches to starving diet of women who follow cleansing fasting procedure and women suffering of mental anorexia. The aim of this study is to ascertain the motivation for starving diet, the reactions of other people and the behavioral changes of fasting and starving women. Data for this research were gathered by unstructured interviews. Furthermore, the bachelor's thesis focused on the use of free time both groups of women acquired. In the theoretical part, the bachelor's thesis refers to fasting procedure, its origin and its impact on psyche. It presents the results of the research on the impact of experimental fasting on psyche. The empirical part of this bachelor's thesis was based on qualitative research. Unstructured interviews were conducted with four women following cleansing fasting procedures and three women suffering of mental anorexia. This research responds to issues of motivation for fasting and starving, the reaction of other people and behaving towards other people. It was concluded by this investigation that women who follow cleansing fasting procedure and women suffering of mental anorexia evince some similar signs in their motivation however they differ in many of them. The theme of weight loss appeared in both groups of interviewed women accept one as a motive leading to starving diet. Furthermore the research reveals the urge to inspire other people to follow the starving diet. This fact does not encounter positive acceptance. On the contrary this causes strong negative response to both fasting and starving.
Reversion to the traditional methods of mental and physical cleansing of man; example of fasting

This bachelor thesis deals with the practise of fasting as one of traditional cleansing methods, nowadays settled in the concept of natural or alternative medicine. The first part explains the very concept of fasting and its principle. Furthermore, it is stated what motivations lead to its taking. This method of purification has deep roots in history, from which it is possible to understand the importance and tradition in different directions of its use. Although the work is not oriented to fasting for religious reasons, this aspect is also outlined because of its strong connection with the general theme of fasting. Thereafter, the text focuses primary on the very fast. The principle of fasting physiology, creating its effects and parallel being a base for understanding the whole method, is explained. Afterwards there is stated possible and recommended duration on the fasting period. The text explains different stages of fasting which one passes through with specific feelings within the respective stage. Finally, the thesis describes principles and recommendations of fasting method, which are important aspects of cleansing. Further the thesis focuses on the negative side effect of fasting and its criticism due to contraindications and opposite opinions of the conventional western medicine. As the last point of this work is indicated the possibility of fasting as a way of changing the lifestyle of the individual.
