Bachelor thesis "1962: The world on the brink of disaster" discusses several days at the end of October 1962 - the Caribbean crisis. Caribbean crisis has become one of the worst crises of the Cold War and during the crisis world was really on the verge of outbreak of nuclear war. The work focuses on addressing this crisis, from the American side. U.S. representatives were at this time dilemma - how to achieve that the missiles were withdrawn from Cuba while also maintaining peace? They had many options. And about how these options they are interested. I'm trying to break down the process of thinking, consider how risk what options were and what conclusions they reached. Why they chose a blockade of the island? What were other suggestions? These are questions with which they deal, and we're trying to find an answer. The possibilities were many and included a direct military attack on the island. The blockade of the island, however, represents the least risk of conflict with the Soviet Union.

Strategic role of the Diego Garcia military base from Cold War until present
Hřivna, Václav ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Ludvík, Jan (referee)
The concern of the diploma thesis is the geostrategic role of the base on the island Diego Garcia. It deals chronologically with the evolvement of this role since the base was established until the present time. Apart from the analysis of the extent, motivation and reasons of the evolvement, the explanation of all these is provided as well. The research is based on the theories formulated by admiral Alfred T. Mahan who was primarily concerned with the agenda of a naval superpower. The issue of bases is directly linked to that subject. The analysis pays attention to physical development of the facilities on the island which to a certain extent reflects the strategic role of the base. It also further examines the regional and global context which is deemed to be crucial for the better understanding of the function the base had for the United States. Practical usage of the base is analysed for a better explanation of the role the base played as some of the contemporary documents are still classified and unavailable. According to the research, the role the base played changed several times but it is very difficult to point out the main factor that caused the change. Most probably, it was caused by a combination of several factors.
Baroque landscaping. Comparing the Schlicksʼ and Saxe-Lauenburgsʼ attitude
Vokurka, Michal ; Zdichynec, Jan (advisor) ; Chodějovská, Eva (referee)
Studying the early modern landscape during the baroque period was often linked to some kind of idealization of the relationship between the pre-modern man and the landscape they lived in. On the example of the 17 Saxe-Lauenburg manor districts I pointed out that the approach to the landscape used to be more functional and pragmatic than the existing literature assumed. The aristocratic representation and power legitimization was historically emphasised by building the landscape after the Thirty Years' War as well the dominancy of Catholicism. Comparing activities of the Saxe-Lauenburgs with the Schlick family and their exceptional composed landscape around Kopidlno, Staré Hrady and Veliš some common and particular trends in the making of landscape became apparent.

Střeštíková, Vendula ; Zemánek, Václav (referee) ; Zemánková, Helena (advisor)
The diploma thesis is focused on the revitalization of the dilapidated area of the former textile factory in Brno, Obřany. Areal is located in the city's peripheral parts between Maloměřice and Obřany. The location of the areal creates a strategic potential for creating a closer relationship between the central part of the city and its peripheries which allows urban activities spread to the distant area. The main target of the paper was to promote the relationship between the island and the water element - the river which brings a unique composition for the creation of a new central point of the urban part, which in Obřany currently lacking. The main focus of the project was to support the local potential by expanding the range of urban activities and recreational opportunities with respect for industrial heritage of Brno. It was necessary to made a radical interventions for island revitalization. Cleaning the island from inappropriate, structural, statically or architecturally inadequate buildings and re-opening the space for public was needed. The former spinning factory was therefore a key element of the entire project. It is due to its monumental qualities predestined to place the main and dominant function which after a previous analysis and survey was allocated to the textile museum. As the opposite of this huge structure there were designed a free and grassy area of the park which has been cleaned from the old unsatisfactory objects. The preserved buildings of the former textile factories were individually revitalized and designed with new suitable functions.
MUSEUM OF TEXTILE INDUSTRY IN BRNO
Pešková, Lucie ; Zemánek, Václav (referee) ; Zemánková, Helena (advisor)
Master's thesis is focused on conversion of former textile-industry area located in Brno-Obřany. The aim of the thesis was to build a new textile museum within the area’s landmark, former cotton mill, and to revive the whole surrounding area for both the locals and tourists. The exceptionality of this place lies on the industrial atmosphere and uniqueness of the island, on which the whole area spreads out. I achieved the overall program of the area through detailed analysis of neighbourhood and it’s needs and possibilities, as well as I studied the programs of successful textile museums worldwide. The project revives the whole island area; in contrast to the industrial history, the area is widely covered with green vegetation and adjusted as a leisure park. Besides a textile museum, there is also a great hall, an energy exposition with original Kaplan turbine, a cyclo-point and a snack bar.
The Constitution and the Subversion of the Exotic Myth
Binarová, Moe ; Voldřichová - Beránková, Eva (advisor) ; Hrbata, Zdeněk (referee) ; Kyloušek, Petr (referee)
The present dissertation outlines the main phases of the development of exoticism: its evolution from the discovery of Tahiti and its basic manifestations and transformations in French and Czech literature from the end of the eighteenth century to the 1930's. It focuses on the birth of the myth of Tahiti as a heavenly place (Bougainville), on its immediate philosophical interpretation in the period of Enlightenment (Diderot) and on its transposition to literature in a broader shape. At times, the island of Tahiti was gradually vanishing from the exotic myth behind another, more indefinite, exotic and ideal place, culture etc., while at other times, the presence of Tahiti was absolutely crucial. In the first half of the nineteenth century, the myth of the exotic paradise renewed literature and enriched it with new themes and motives (Chateaubriand, Romanticism), which, however, led progressively to the creation of simplified schemes and clichés. These, due to their repetitive nature, degraded the image of the myth (Loti). Although the superficial and unsophisticated adaptation of exoticism lasted until the twentieth century (Havlasa, Novák), in the meantime, from the second half of the nineteenth century, the myth of Tahiti was being radically reassessed and transposed to literature in a new way....
