John Steinbeck's treatment of loneliness - a biographical and fictional experience - an analysis of loneliness in Tortilla Flat, Cannery Row and Of Mice and Men
Purkrábková, Petra ; Ženíšek, Jakub (advisor) ; Farrell, Mark Robert (referee)
"Every man's work, whether it be literature, or music or pictures or architecture or anything else, is always a portrait of himself." (Butler) The aim of this thesis is to put forward the importance of the author behind the book and to see clearly the effect of an author's life upon his work. The theme in focus is loneliness. This theme is to be analyzed in a dual manner. Firstly as an account of Steinbeck's own experience of loneliness. Secondly as a theme of focus in the novels; Of Mice and Men, Cannery Row and Tortilla Flat. Where applicable, a correlation between the author's own experience of loneliness and the struggle of his characters is to be highlighted. This thesis is separated into five parts. The initial part is a brief definition of loneliness which serves the purpose of introducing the theme of study. It also states the terms that will be used throughout the thesis. The second part is an analysis of Steinbeck's own experience of loneliness as obtained through a compilation of his letters. These two parts conclude the theoretic background of John Steinbeck and his intimate relation to the phenomenon of loneliness. The further three parts are analyses of the three listed novels. The focus is on each applicable character and his/her portrayal of loneliness. By analysing each individual...

Dvořáková, Helena ; Pelikán, Jiří (advisor) ; Prokop, Jiří (referee) ; Vítečková, Michaela (referee)
Dissertation thesis summary: Influence of nannies on the overall development of the ward This dissertation thesis deals with the topic of child minding by an alternative caregiver, the so-called nanny. Its target is to broadly examine and describe the issue, with emphasis on defined aspects. The presented theoretical-research work covers existing institutions and services for child care in both Czech Republic and abroad. It primarily strives, however, to capture the essence of motherhood from psychological, philosophical and genetic points of view. This effort takes into consideration the question of separation, and consequently traumatization in childhood. A significant part of the paper concentrates on the area of education of the child care providing persons. The research chapters focus on the influence of the nanny not only on the child, but also on the family atmosphere and the educational stances of the parents. It further deals with the position of the nanny within the family, and with bounds of the child-nanny relationship. The output of the work is then a practical handbook, a manual with specifically defined content of an educational program (for nanny-position aspirants and for already practicing professionals). The material was drawn up with help of experts, with the aim to point out weak spots...

Švarcbachová, Zuzana ; Špačková, Klára (advisor) ; Valentová, Hana (referee)
The diploma thesis focused on the issue of coping with separation from the family. Specifically, it focused on so-called homesickness in children of younger school age when participating in a several-day stay at school in nature. The aim of the work was to map the risk factors contributing to a worse experience of separation child from the family and to compile basic recommendations for teachers on what measures they should take together with the family to make it as easy as possible for the child to stay outside the family. Based on a study of the literature and research reports, a questionnaire for parents was first prepared and then submitted, which could help teachers find children at risk, but also draw attention to parents' risky behavior, which could exacerbate difficulties in coping. Records of risk factors were compared with records of children's experience and behavior during school stays in nature. These were obtained through a pupil questionnaire survey and a structured questionnaire for accompanying teachers. The diploma thesis managed to determine the positive activities that parents should choose before the child leaves for school in nature. The results of the research confirmed a significant connection between longing and the factor of previous experience with staying away from...

ŠINDELÁŘ, Jakub
This bachelor's thesis analyzes the work-life balance of truck drivers and aims to examine the lives of drivers' families to determine whether it is possible to balance their personal and work lives. The theoretical foundation of this thesis is based on literary sources, which discuss characteristics of a driver's work as well as work-life balance. The author details the current situation of Czech families with regard to family and social policy of the Czech Republic. Further, the author explains health issues that may result from sedentary work including truck driving. This study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with seven truck drivers of various ages and work practices. In the interviews, drivers express their experiences with work-life balance and consequent family issues. Respondents also spoke about the characteristics and problems of the driver's work. The results indicate to some extent possibility of work-life balance of truck drivers although the balance is imperfect and family needs are not satisfied fully. The family model of truck driver families corresponds to gender role division of labor and especially childcare is not divided between a man and woman equally thanks to a long period of a man away from home caused by characteristics of driver's work.
