A Volunteer with a Big "V" - Laid-back, or Self-sacrificing?
Vondrušová, Gabriela ; Pospíšilová, Tereza (advisor) ; Šťovíčková Jantulová, Magdaléna (referee)
Volunteering - one of the topics which are still present in the society, as it can be perceived as a unique instrument to solve social challenges or organizing society with its specific conditions. The topic of my diploma thesis, based on the grounded theory method, is the process of building and maintaining the relationship of the volunteer to their voluntary work from the volunteers' perspective. I was curious as to what circumstances or limits accompany the forming of such a relationship in the social context and if certain "prototypes" can be found, which would differ in negotiating their role to their surroundings. In my thesis, I focus exclusively on those volunteers who have been given the "Křesadlo" award for the volunteer of the year, which provides the framework of this relationship. I would like to use my results to enrich the knowledge of volunteering's image, which could be used both on the academic field and when working with volunteers. Keywords: civic sector, volunteering, self-perspective, role, identity, "looking-glass self", norm, defence mechanisms, information management, Křesadlo.
Crisis Intervention in a School Environment
Matasová, Lenka ; Koťa, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Sedláčková, Daniela (referee)
The first chapter of the theoretical part of this master's thesis summarizes basic knowledge about crises. The second chapter deals with ways of protecting people from crises. It covers defence mechanisms, coping strategies and social support. Chapter 3 describes specialist help for people suffering crises, and provides a summary of basic information about crisis intervention. The next chapter deals with children in crisis situations, major types of stress situations for children, their manifestations and their consequences for the child's psyche and behaviour. The final chapter of the theoretical part of the master's thesis deals with ways of intervening in crises in the school environment. The practical part of the master's thesis is an empirical study in the form of semi-structured interviews with lower secondary stage teachers. The interviews investigate the experience and the preparedness of teachers for resolving crisis situations in the school environment. The research carried out in this project provides material for an analysis of the interviews. Keywords: crisis, crisis intervention, defence mechanisms, coping strategies, skills for crisis intervention.
Defense Mechanisms in School-Age Children

Besides that, more defense mechanism assessment methods, used for children, are mentioned. The next topics covered in this thesis are defense mechanism characteristics in school-age children and defense mechanism development. Results compiled from large body of research are mentioned in this section. In the final chapter a research design is presented. It concentrates on comparison of defense mechanism assessment using Fairy Tale Test and Defense Mechanism Manual.
How do plants manage to survive on toxic spoil-mining sites? Physiological and structural properties of plants on substrates with high As and Hg contents
Kovářová, Monika ; Albrechtová, Jana (advisor) ; Soudek, Petr (referee)
The heavy metals contamination of environment represents a worldwide problem lately. Heavy metals cause harmful effects not only to plants, but also to other organisms. Throught their acumulation in plant biomass, heavy metals enter a food chain and could negatively influence the human health. The impact of heavy metals on plants and their defence mechanisms against toxicity of heavy metals have been in focus of plant physiology and ecology research for decades. Importance of this topic arises from plant role in environment, ecosystem services and in human nutrition. Investigation in proces and mechanisms of heavy metal hyperacumulation in plants offer progress in fytoremediation and genetic engineering. The experiments on agricultural crops show how heavy metals enter the food chain and how they affect the crop yield. The aim of this thesis is to summarize information about heavy metals' effects on plants. The thesis is focused on arsenic and mercury, because the Czech Republic have also problem with heavy metals contamination and these two metals occur in high concentration in the spoil banks and soils adjacent to the lignite mining areas of Sokolovsko. The spoil banks with heavy metal content have to be revegatated, thus, the topic of their effect on plants is of high importance. In the first part of the...

The model psychological crisis of a people with gained physical disability
ŠMOLÍKOVÁ, Kateřina
This thesis explores the model of psychological crisis of people with post natal physical disabilities. A post natal disability, which is gained after birth, can be a result of a sudden and unexpected incident and the individual is often left with no choice but to deal with the newly acquired difficult situation. In most cases an identity crisis sets in short after the accident during which most of personal, social and family relations are greatly redefined. The theoretical part has altogether four chapters. First chapter defines terms and classifications of physical disabilities and distinguishes between acquired disabilities and congenital or hereditary disabilities. It focuses on the character of an individual with an acquired disability and his or her professional, personal and parental role. The second chapter is focused on the psychological crisis as a result of an acquired disability, its typology and internal mental processes related to it. The models used for this part of the thesis are the ones of Kübler-Ross, Vágner, Říčan and Caplan. Third chapter mentions the psychological immunity of an individual the various necessary coping mechanisms and strategies. The last fourth chapter is concerned with the psychological help which includes an informal support; self-help, mutual help and psychotherapy (esp. person-centered approach of Carl Rogers, supportive psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy). The content of theoretical part of this thesis was based on internet resource analysis. The goal of this study is to determine which coping mechanisms individuals use to deal with the difficult situation and what are the different stages of personal crisis. Another major objective of this thesis is to establish to what extent the individuals have sought professional psychological help. Data for this study were obtained through interviews with people who have a personal experience with acquired physical disabilities. The research part of this thesis includes the aim, the research question and the characteristics of the entire research set. It analyses the methodology used for this research, the approach used for collecting the data and the research itself and its results. Participant observation and narrative interview were the methods used for the purpose of qualitative research. The respondents were asked to participate through a written request for cooperation. The interviews were then being carried out from January 2014 to March 2015. The goals of this research were met through collecting the necessary data and analyzing the interviews. The results suggest that every person is an individual being and everyone copes with their disabilities in a unique way. Due to the variety of the research set it is not possible to summarize all results into one uniform conclusion. Simple observation of the data collected reveals that lengths of interviews and narrative manners of each respondent vary greatly. Each individual experienced the model of psychological crisis in their unique way all subjects experienced some level of anger and aggression. All subjects were also in unison about the fact that optimism and family support are crucial elements in successfully coping with an acquired disability. This study might serve as an informative source for students and people in assisting professional practice as well as for families of disabled individuals. Furthermore it might offer valuable suggestions for improving specific services, for instance in the fields of psychotherapy or assistance for people with acquired physical disabilities who are facing the challenge of coping with their difficult situation.
Ethics and culture in interaction with difficult clients
DUŠKOVÁ, Helena
In my thesis, I focused on the ethical and cultural dimension of social work, application of ethical principles and choice of attitude by a helping professional when working with a client. Subsequently, I followed changes in application of these ethical principles and changes of attitude in high-strain situations in the contact with a so-called difficult client. Further, I focused on the defence mechanisms which a helping professional chooses to cope with high-strain situations and manage his job well. In the individual chapters of the theoretical parte, by the analysis of scientific literature I described theoretical bases of the professional relationship between a social/health social worker and a klient and I focused on the realization of this relationship and on what it brings the worker in high-strain situations when working with the so-called difficult client. In the empirical part, I set one main goal to find out how social workers react on the ethical level in high-strain situations while interacting with difficult clients. Partial goals were designed to find out what ethical principles social workers apply, what attitudes they choose, which clients they consider difficult and what defence mechanisms they develop to cope with high-strain situations. To reflect these goals, I set one main research question and four partial ones. For the collection of data, I opted for the method of quantitative research and I used the questioning method in the form of a half-structured interview. I chose the set of respondents for my research by the method of simple random sampling. To process the research data, I chose the method of case study. Processing the interviews and analysing them, I found out that social workers in high-strain situations do not change their application of ethical principles. Further, I found out that the choice of attitude in high-strain situations changes and that social workers choose, instead of a partner attitude based on equality, a more or less directive stance. All of the respondents met a difficult client at work and dealing with high-strain situations causes them certain indisposition they have to cope with. The answer to the main research question is thus that on ethical level social workers react in high-strain situation by a shift in the choice of their attitude and solving ethical dilemmas. It was a hostile client that the social workers listed most frequently in the typology of clients. It became evident during the interviews what kind of defence mechanisms social workers choose to be able to cope with high-strain situations. The thesis may provide information to the general public and experts.
Differences in the process of adaptation in adolescents and adults diagnosed with diabetes mellitus first type

Rationalisation as a defensive mechanism used by prisoners
RULÍK, Jan
This thesis is about a rationalization as a defensive mechanism used by prisoners. In the theoretical part there are mentioned the Czech prisons in a current European concept as well as a description of a term ?algorithm for punishment?. It consists of parts which are necessary for re-integration of prisoners into a society and for better relationships that are damaged by a crime. The conclusion of this part is focused generally on defensive mechanisms and there are mainly described mechanisms which are used by prisoners mostly including a rationalization. In the practical part there is a target of the thesis, basic questions and a qualitative research. There is also analysed a technique of a narrative interview. In the exact results there are also described the Remand Prison in Česke Budějovice and the research sample. The results of the interview are arranged in the charts. In the discussion, the thesis is focused on the realization and achieved results in details. The conclusion advises how to get over the defensive mechanism of the rationalization which is used by prisoners.
