This bachelor thesis aims to analyse how three newspapers, namely Rudé právo, The Guardian and The New York Times, presented the student protests in Tiananmen Square in 1989. The period from 13 May 1989 to 26 June 1989 was chosen for the analysis, as it fully covers the situation preceding the massacre, the massacre of 4 June 1989 itslelf and its aftermath. In order to achieve the most accurate results, qualitative content analysis and so-called grounded theory will be used. The questions that will be answered through this thesis concern the specific aspects on which the individual newspapers placed emphasis, as well as how often the events were covered and with what temporal sequence, then which language features were used, and which reporting principles were applied within the news and journalistic texts. Based on the data collected, it was found that Rudé právo, ideologically charting communist mindset in China, held similar views to the Chinese Government, i.e. that the students attempted to overthrow the Government and the regime, and during the actual suppression of the protests, the soldiers were attacked by the students, not the other way around. The Guardian and The New York Times reported on the protests in a quite opposite way, regarding the protests as pro-democracy and the military...

Wang, Qiulin ; Balon, Jan (advisor) ; Vocásek, Tibor (referee)
The origin of Covid-19 has been a subject of intense public discussion since early 2020, with different countries such as China and the US engaging in propaganda over which laboratory was responsible for the virus's leak. This narrative battle has not only been fought on the basis of scientific evidence but has also become highly politicized, with mainstream media outlets such as newspapers taking sides. This qualitative research employs a critical discourse approach, using Van Dijk's ideological square, to compare newspaper discourses on Covid-19 origin in China (Global Times) and the US (The Wall Street Journal) and identify what images of ingroup and outgroup have the media created through news reporting respectively. The study also analyzes the discursive strategies used by the newspapers to reinforce their narrative. The findings reveal that both newspapers show a dichotomy of "us versus them." In Global Times, The United States is depicted as incompetent, dishonest, politically driven, and unresponsive to concerns regarding its bio labs. Reciprocally, China is portrayed as culpable for Covid-19, uncooperative, and with concerns about its political system and risky lab practices in The Wall Street Journal. The study also indicates that linguistic tactics such as evidentiality, lexicalization,...

in English This paper looks into how climate change is being covered by newspaper media in two Global South countries and two Global North countries - India, the Philippines, Denmark and Australia. While there is some literature on who the main sources are in climate change coverage, as well as how frequently climate change is covered in different countries, there is less literature on how climate change is framed, and how this relates to who the main sources are. Analyzing articles from three newspapers in each country, this content analysis gathered data on what sources are being predominantly used in news articles, and further, how these articles are being framed. It was found that climate change has become a highly politicized issue in the media across most of these countries, and that the main voice in how climate change is becoming to be understood is politicians - except for in Denmark. At the same time, it was found that climate change is mainly being framed as an issue in need of action - except for in Australia.
