The Return of the Baroque in Hispano-American Novel of the 20th Century - Asturias, Carpentier, Roa Bastos
Doležalová, Barbora ; Činátlová, Blanka (advisor) ; Bílek, Petr (referee)
The diploma thesis "The Return of the Baroque in Hispano-American Novel of the 20th Century - Asturias, Carpentier, Roa Bastos" examines Baroque motifs and principles in the modern 20th century Hispanic-American novel. It explains how these traits alter in contrast to the historical Baroque, how they are modified or what other functions they acquire. An attempt was made to critically rethink and re-evaluate the literary theories dealing with the reappearance of the Baroque in Hispanic America, as we consider their approach to be generalising and reductive. The interpretative method is based on Josef Vojvodík's Povrch, skrytost a ambivalence and namely how it addresses the manner in which the Baroque, Mannerism and avant-garde relate to one another. A characterisation of the American Baroque as such has been drafted and an attempt to capture the differences between the European Baroque has been made. The essayistic work of Alejo Carpentier is treated with an emphasis on the relationship of the (Neo)Baroque and magic realism. Carpentier wrongly attributes to the continent what he installs through his own optics without realising that such an approach might be itself described as being Baroque. The interpretative part provides a linguistic, thematic and motivic analysis of Baroque traits in a choice...

Iraqi exile literature
Klasová, Pamela Markéta ; Ondráš, František (advisor) ; Oliverius, Jaroslav (referee)
This thesis examines the work of the contemporary exilic Iraqi author Ḥasan Blāsim within the framework of magical realism. At the same time it argues for a more formalistic and wider definition of magical realism, which also includes fiction without any supernatural elements. Magical realistic components found in the short story collection Majnūn sāḥat al-ḥurrīya (The Madman of Freedom Square) underline the most important themes in the stories. These are related to the catastrophes that afflicted Iraq and its people in the course of last thirty years. With its emphasis on the documentation of modern Iraqi history dominated by war and exile Blāsim's work belongs to the genre of documentary narrative. The goal of documentary narrative is to contribute to the collective memory of a nation. Despite Blāsim's focus on documenting, magical realism in his work cannot be considered as an attempt to create a parallel cultural world. The supernatural in his stories functions metaphorically and relates exclusively to the real world of war and violence, in which people under heavy circumstances turn into animals, cannibals, which is magical in itself. In addition, Blāsim's work is on a subordinate level discussed from the perspective of postcolonial theory. Postcolonial theory has undergone a complicated...
Toni Morrison; Magical Realism Serving to Outline Cultural Experience
Hůlková, Kateřina ; Veselá, Pavla (advisor) ; Roraback, Erik Sherman (referee)
Thesis Abstract In my thesis I focus on the application and role of magical realism in Toni Morrison's two novels, Song of Solomon and Beloved. Because the supernatural elements in these two stories serve mainly as catalytic forces that reveal hidden and submerged realities of the characters' lives, my goal was to discuss and determine Morrison's motivations for the use of magical realism, its purpose, and possible final results of the writer's literary effort. I began by analyzing Morrison's own critical work in which she focuses on her position as a writer being confronted with the dehumanized picture of blackness the way it was created by white Americans in order to preserve their own humanity in the wilderness of the New World. As for the literary language, the writer argues that the said point of view and the literary tradition that stems from it offer only two possible approaches: incursive glorification of the minority, or defensive conformity. These nevertheless appear to be metaphorical blind alleys to her attempts, as none has a potential to create an authentic picture of African Americans. A relevant hindering obstacle to mention is that a lot was lost through the process of dehumanization. My attempt was to demonstrate that by the application of magical realism, Morrison tries to re-humanize (to...
