The theme of this diploma thesis is the design and implementation of a dashboard for a specific paper company using the knowledge of an effective way of data visualization. The new dashboard is being developed as a replacement for the current reporting method, which does not allow the best information to be passed on. In order to design an effective dashboard, it was necessary to gain knowledge of specialized literature dealing with the topic of reporting, dashboarding and visualization of information. The following methods were used in the theoretical part: introduction and description of current situation in reporting and dashboards for obtaining a theoretical basis then finding principles and trends of data visualization for the design of effective graphic components displaying key information. In the practical part, it was necessary to analyze the current state of the reporting solution in the company and to identify requirements for the new dashboard. This information was obtained through semi-structured interviews with representatives of dashboard users. Introductory chapters are devoted to the interpretation of the theme dashboards. It introduces its historical development, basic concepts and it explains definition of dashboard. Subsequently, the author describes the characteristics of different kinds of dashboards. Another part deals with the theoretical basis of information visualization. Describes the basic processes of human perception and the ways it is affected by handling of the various attributes of the displayed information. The practical part of the thesis deals with the design and implementation of a dashboard in Mondi Štětí a.s. When designing the graphic design of the dashboard and the individual elements author uses the findings explained in the theoretical part. The dashboard prototype, created in Tableau, was subsequently consulted and validated with users. Based on their comments, it was modified and then implemented for real use. The result of this work is a dashboard of residence times, designed according to the principles of efficient data visualization. This dashboard meets user requirements and fulfills its defined purpose. Another benefit of the thesis is a summary of the theoretical knowledge and data visualization principles, which can serve as a source of instruction for the reader. At the end of the thesis, the author suggests ways to further develop the new dashboard.

The thesis deals with analysing and designing an effective dashboard. By way of introduction the topics of Business Intelligence, data storages and data quality are described. Then, an overview of analytical outputs is given and the process of their formation is outlined. The basic principles of an effective design of management reports are described, with emphasis laid on the end user. The thesis focuses on important factors of efficiency, such as applicability of transferred information and the form of their transfer. The practical part concentrates on the improvement of the efficiency of a particular dashboard. Besides the rules of a correct design, knowledge of cognitive psychology is also used for this purpose. Upon an analysis of deficiencies of an existing dashboard, proposed changes are incorporated. Changes resulting in more effective transfer of information via a dashboard are based on a theoretical basis of the previous section.
Principles and processes of making reports and their verification in the selected reporting tools
Čelikovský, Filip ; Maryška, Miloš (advisor) ; Pesek, Jan (referee)
The diploma thesis covers the principles of dashboard or report design. The first part of thesis is focused on introduction to the issue of reporting, based on current literature. There are the definitions of basic terms, position of reporting in corporate structure, history and basic division in this part. Further, this thesis is focused on information design. There are descriptions of basic visualization elements commonly used in reporting, after that the issue of using colours and finally the information about the appropriate distribution of these elements on the surface of the dashboard or report. In the practical part of the thesis, there is primarily created the methodology of comparison of reporting tools. The goal of this methodology is to compare two specific tools for obtaining information about the qualities of compared reporting tools. As a part of this methodology, there is also a list of required functions and also a few user criteria which are assessed based on the practical use of these tools during creation of specific dashboard. Complex design of this sample dashboard is also part of the methodology. Methodology was proved by its application to two compared tools, namely the SAP Crystal Reports 2011 and Tableau Desktop 8.1. Result of this comparison contained a lot of information about the tools which can be used by reader as a basis for creation his or her own opinion on the tools. Author stated his own recommendation which of the compared tools he would choose for future work in dashboard design.

Image interpretation value and its purpose in creation of scientific figures and infographics
Phung, Hyu Nghia ; Sigmund, Tomáš (advisor) ; Horný, Stanislav (referee)
Graphic figures and various types of infographics have become an essential part of the scientific papers, business presentations and study materials. Although, authors of these documents often lack the knowledge of basic rules and principles of graphic design and learn how to create figures by trial and error. Literature addressing the issues of effective verbal (presentation skills) and non-verbal (principles of scientific writing) is available and accessible. Though literature addressing the issues of scientific figure design and general visual design are very few, sometimes non existent, despite the fact that images, figures and various charts are one of the most effective mediums for information sharing. This lack of material knowledge is detrimental to the quality of works of managers, professors and researchers. This thesis attempts to fill in this gap and motivate readers to further development and research of the issue. The thesis addresses the issue of figures from its core, those being the basic principles of image perception and interpretation. Building on concepts of theorists like Peirce, Saussure and Eco the thesis will then define the meaning and purpose of "Image Interpretation Value". Selected principles of figure construction and interpretation will be introduced. These principles will then be further analyzed and applied on the level of business and scientific figures. Each chapter will include various graphic figures and practical examples to enhance further understanding of the issue. The primary purpose and goal of this thesis is to create an easy-to-follow set of instructions and suggestions on how to design effective and intelligible figures to be used in the fields of business communication, scientific research and academic teaching.
Multimedia communication
Vondra, Zdeněk ; Horný, Stanislav (advisor) ; Brixí, Radim (referee)
Multimedia communication arises as a theoretical issue according to the constant and fast progress in information and communication technology evolution. In relation to the process of digitalization, there are made a new instruments and possibilities of communication that integrate a lot of new and also standard approaches. Focus of the public and both the producers is directing mainly to the technologies and tools. Theoretical framework that predicts the impacts and advices effective using in society context retreated into the background of interest. It is going to start massive expansion of technological instruments without the general know-how of parameters of its using and without the importance in whole society contact. Literacy in this way is a key to effective information design which allows us to communicate the message we want to in the way we want to. This document deals with issue of analysis actual state and synthesis of the basics that are important for the development of theoretical base. Main goal of this base it to support effective production of multimedia content thru identifying elementary principles that affects the transfer of message by multimedia. In the process of multimedia communication is happening that the initiator is separated from the message and has no possibility to manipulate with it during the process. So it is very necessary to act consciously and qualified during the formulations and coding to media to avoid bad reinterpretations and so that message will be resistant to the disruptive effects.
