Specific Grammatical Features of African-American Vernacular

The thesis focuses on grammatical features of African American Vernacular English (AAVE). The theoretical part provides general information on the variety and describes the morphological and syntactic features that distinguish the variety from Standard American English (SAE) or other vernaculars. The main source used to capture these specific features is Lisa Green's African American English: A Linguistic Introduction (2002), which was found to present the most contemporary and detailed description of the variety. Occasionally, materials by other linguists were also employed. At the end of the theoretical part, a brief summary of features of SAE is included in order to show what the variety is contrasted with. The empirical part of the thesis surveys the morpho-syntactic specificity of the vernacular as represented in fiction, identifying and classifying one hundred features of AAVE in each of three contemporary African American writings: The Color Purple by Alice Walker, Beloved by Toni Morrison and Brothers and Keepers by John Edgar Wideman. The majority of specific features are found in the area of verbs whose morphology tends, in general, to be specific in all vernaculars, but other word classes and syntactic structures are represented as well. Alan Glynn's Limitless - Translation and Stylistic Analysis

This bachelor thesis is focused on the translation and subsequent stylistic analysis of two chapters from the novel Limitless by Alan Glynn. The main aim of the thesis is to demonstrate certain problems one may encounter while translating fiction from the English language to the Czech language. The thesis consists of two main parts. The practical part features the translation of selected chapters of the novel, whereas the theoretical part is divided into four units and explores selected issues accompanying the translation process.

Negative intensification in spoken British English

The BA thesis examines means of intensification of negation in British spoken English. Since intensification is generally associated with adverbials, more precisely with adverbs of degree, another aim of the study is to prove there are other than lexical means of intensification. For it is focused on the spoken language, which is natural, unplanned, improvised, it includes constructions that are regarded as ungrammatical in Standard English, but occur widely in the material used, namely the demographically sampled sub-corpus of the British National Corpus. Drawing on Dušková et al. (1988) and Biber et al. (1999) the thesis defines negation and intensification, and their mutual interaction and relation. Based on the findings of Palacios- Martínez (1996), the thesis aims at suggesting a suitable classification of the means of negative intensification provided by the corpus-based study. keywords: intensification, intensifier, negation, speech, colloquial language

Resultative and perfect in -(в)ши in non-standard varieties of Russian

The subject of the present thesis is resultative and perfect of -(в)ши in non-standard varieties of Russian languange. The thesis is consists of four chapters. The first chapter is devoted to the theory. The second chapter focuses on analysis of examples of perfect and resultative in -(в)ши , which were collected mostly from colloquial languange, but also from dialectical literature and from fiction.The third chapter of the thesis contains the results of questionnaire and commentary on it. Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice - the translation and stylistic analysis of one chapter

The main aim of this bachelor thesis is to point out the most common problems that the translators from English to Czech may encounter, exemplified by real solutions in the proces of translating modern fiction. This work consists of two parts. The theoretical part of is the the actual translation of one chapter of the novel The Vampire Lestat by american author Anne Rice. The theoretical part contains the stylistic analysis of the translated text and it is aimed at the probles I have encountered while translating the text. I am commenting on the technique that I have chosen on the basis of the translation theories, particularly those by Jiří Levý, Dagmar Knittlová and Zlata Kufnerová.

Translation and Stylistic Analysis of One Chapter of Casualties of Peace by Edna O'Brien

This bachelor thesis focuses on difficulties encountered when translating English fiction into Czech. It is divided into two sections. The practical part provides the translation of one chapter of the novel Casualties of Peace written by an Irish author Edna O'Brien in 1966. The theoretical part delivers the stylistic analysis including choice of register, morphological, lexical, syntactic and pragmatic aspects. Each of them is illustrated with the commented examples based on theoretical background from works by Jiří Levý, Dagmar Knittlová and Olga Krijtová.

Systeme of relative pronouns in spoken French

The relative pronoun system in spoken French represents an aspect of the French language that didn't receive appropriate attention by the scientific community until the second half of the 20th century. The aim of this work is to explore the system of relative clauses and related subordinate strategies in spoken variant of the French language, confronting it with its normative variant, as well as to explain causes of the existence of this diasystemism in French relative subordination. The main part of this work is a research based on testing representative non-normative constructions on internet forums and via a questionnaire. The results illustrate tendencies and the rate of acceptability of non-normative subordinate strategies using complementizer across the French speaking society, and thus contribute to a better understanding of this aspect of the French language.

Toby's Room by Pat Barker - the translation and stylistic analysis of three chapters of the novel

The main aim of this bachelor thesis is to point out the most frequent problems the translators tackle during the translation from the English to the Czech language. This work is divided into two parts. The first one involves my translation of the first three chapters of the novel Toby's Room written by the English author Pat Barker. The second section, the theoretical one, is devoted to the analysis of the translation and particularly to the most common translation difficulties springing from morphological, syntactic and stylistic differences between the two languages mentioned above. The analysis of this part is based on the quotes from the theoretical literature, especially from works by J. Levý, Z. Kuffnerová and D. Knittlová, and shows to what extent the first part of the work follows the translation methods recommended by these authors.

A contrastive study of hyperbole in Czech and English. A corpus-based study

The aim of this study is to compare and contrast the use of hyperbole or exaggeration in spoken Czech and English language. The research is based on comparative approach to two samples accounting for 100 hyperbolic instances in Czech and 100 instances of hyperbole in English. The Czech sample has been randomly excerpted from the oral part of the Czech National Corpus ORAL2008, whereas the English sample has been randomly excerpted from the "spoken context-govern" and "spoken demographic" sections of The British National Corpus. The two samples are subject to analysis. Firstly, the formal realization of hyperbole is examined. Secondly, the occurrences are classified semantically (quantitative versus qualitative hyperbole) and, thirdly, the lexico-semantics is examined (hyperbolic source domains). By this, the present study tests the hypothesis of universal hyperbolic source domains by examining the situation in Czech and English. Finally, the occurrence of conventionalized instances of hyperbole as opposed to creative instances of hyperbolic nonce-usages is examined. Last but not least, it is the aim of this study to provide the overall frequency figures of hyperbole in both languages.

This diploma work is mainly a monography of a Czech author Pavel Zajicek. The base of this study is the analysis and the interpretation of his lifelong official and samizdat literary work. In the analysis of some of his prerevolutionary books as the main source I used mainly the critiques of the contemporary literary magazines. I also present the life of the author itself, especially in the context of the period he lived in. I will briefly mention two musical bands that are closely related to this personality {--} DG 307 and PPU. In my studies I use my personal e-mail with Pavel Z. and I do not forget to observe all accesible dialogues with this poet. This diploma work is mainly a monography of a Czech author Pavel Zajicek. The base of this study is the analysis and the interpretation of his lifelong official and samizdat literary work. In the analysis of some of his prerevolutionary books as the main source I used mainly the critiques of the contemporary literary magazines. I also present the life of the author itself, especially in the context of the period he lived in.
