Mario Vargas Llosa: The feast of the goat - fiction vs. historical facts

(in English): The Bachelor's Thesis examines Mario Vargas Llosa's novel, The Feast of The Goat. It analyzes the novel from a historical point of view. First part pays attention to the history of Dominican Republic, it focuses on the period of dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo, especially on its last years. It examines his politics, cult of his personality and mark that he left in dominican history. The second part compares historical reality with literary presentation by Mario Vargas Llosa. It examines how much the author remains trutful to the historical facts and shows, where he helps himself out with fiction. Further on it analyzes particular characters and clarifies why are they significant to characterize Trujillo and his regime. The final chapter upholds the novel as a historical source, although is is a historical novel.

The aim of this thesis is to determine how is the character of Eliška Rejčka perceiving in the fiction. The first part of the thesis deals with the historical synergies. The second part compares the real history with fiction and deals with character of Eliška Rejčka in the analyzed books. At the end of this thesis is to summarize all books with the character of Eliška Rejčka and find out if they are written correctly according to the history.
Art interpretation of Czech history in the historical prose by Alois Jirásek

The thesis deals with the issues of literary-historical situation of works by Alois Jirásek in the Czech tradition of the historical novel and characteristic of literary representation of history by the writer. The thing is that after the creation of Czechoslovakia in 1918 Jirásek became the official symbol of the literature of the new state, and younger authors followed him ideologically, thematically, and after the formal construction of works. Jirásek's authority didn't weaken in the second half of the 20th century, when his method of literary interpretation of Czech history was ideologically misused. On the basis of literary analysis of two historical novels (Proti všem and Temno), the author of thesis describes Jirásek's narrative style and the means of expression that gives the writer the possibility to reach the art effectiveness of his novels. Keywords: Nağīb Maḥfūẓ, egyptian literature, history, symbol, image, egyptology, leader, nationalism, identity This thesis examines the role of the symbols in the three historical novels of Nağīb Maḥfūẓ that take place in the Ancient Egypt. In his return to the history of his nation, he shows people the way to their own identity and explains the contemporary situation in the country by using symbols. We try to prove that his novels renew the traditions and connect the modern Egypt with the legends. We demonstrate on the extracts the intentions of the author, confront his deviation from the historical facts and present reasons which led author to do that. For further comprehension, we give details about the historical novel, egyptology and show the impact of european authors on Nağīb Maḥfūẓ.

The subject of this thesis is depiction of Wenceslas II. in historical romances. The main emphasis is on historical point. The theoretical part is focused on general characteristics of reing of Václav the second and his life. In this part there are marked important moments in monarch's life, which occur also in romances. Practical part is dealing with analysis of four historical romances - by Oldřich Daněk, Jiří Hanibal, Jan Lipšanský and Ludmila Vaňková. Analyse is focused mainly on historical inaccuracies and characteristics of main historical personalities. Concluding part contains comparison of all four romances. The aim of this thesis is to show different views of writers to important historical personality, who played considerable role in czech history.

Representing Slavery in Black British Writing

This thesis is concerned with black British literature which deals with the issue of slavery. The chosen authors are of a Caribbean or an Afro-Indian (though, an American novelist was used for needs of comparison) origin and belong to the black diaspora in Britain. The issue of slavery in the Caribbean is central to the forming of and creating an identity and defining the concept of home in the works debated. The aim of this thesis is to determine the impact of the past of slavery on the identity of people in the black British diaspora as well as to determine the approach and aesthetic choice most appropriate for representation of such traumatic past. The first part of this thesis concentrates on theoretical background of the topic of slavery in the Caribbean in order to define terms such as diaspora, cultural identity, memory and the difficulty of not only artistic representation of slavery but also its remembering. It also includes the historical background of slavery and slave trade in Britain and the Caribbean in the eighteenth and the nineteenth century in order to be able to judge the accuracy of the works and to comprehend the cruel reality of slavery. Ironic Myths and Broken Images: Reflections of the 1798 Rebellion in Twentieth-Century Irish Fiction and Drama

The 1798 Irish rebellion together with the preceding decade is justly regarded as a watershed event in the forming of Irish national identity. Therefore it is not surprising that it has inspired numerous, and often conflicting, interpretations in both historiography and literature. This study concentrates on both English- and Irish-language historical novels and plays written about the rebellion in the course of the twentieth century, especially after the year 1916. Attention is drawn to the interpretations of the event contained in these literary works, comparing them to the various views of 1798 as they have evolved in Irish historiography. As the rebellion, especially from the 1970s onward, has been increasingly seen in the light of the later conflict in Northern Ireland, this connection has an important place in the analysis. On the theoretical level, the thesis draws from the findings of Hayden White, who has famously questioned the border between historiographical and fictional treatments of historical events. At the same time, this relativism is complemented by selected features of the philosophy of Paul Ricoeur, who highlighted the inevitable ethical questions connected to representations of history.
