Gender Stereotypes in Gaming Environment

Předmětem této bakalářské práce je analýza genderových stereotypů ve vypravěčské linii a designu videoher. Jsou zde také vyjmenovány klíčové historické momenty pro zásadní pochopení videoherního průmyslu a přítomnosti genderových stereotypů v něm. Dává příležitost vidět, jak události v reálném světě a veřejné mínění ovlivňují videohry a vytvářejí nebo snižují genderové stereotypy v nich. Teze nabízí vhled do problematiky nadměrné sexualizace mužů i žen, včetně toho, jak může ovlivnit vnímání sebepojetí u různých lidí. Otázka sexualizace je posuzována z několika pohledů, mezi nimiž existuje kulturní rozdíl mezi východními a západními zeměmi. V této práci je navíc představen seznam stereotypních genderových rolí, do nichž jsou lidé často zařazováni. Přináší světlo na důsledky, které z rolí vyplývají.
Korean game industry with a focus on online games from 2000 to the present

The aim of this thesis is to analyze Korean gaming industry with a focus on online games and to outline future possible path where the industry may go. For better orientation in the field I explain major terms and global gaming situation. I continue with a history of Korean gaming, major games themselves and the role they played on the bigger scene. The other part is focused on localization of Korean games in regions of North America and Europe and also shows South Korea as a pioneer in the field of global eSports. In addition to an important historical context and practical and theoretical analysis of game genres and potential of games, key chapters of this thesis are devoted to the importance of games and their impact on various aspects of our lives, from economic and demographic factors to influence on our culture and contemporary art. This thesis also aims to introduce computer games and video games in the context of "neglected media" and the theory of "remediation".

DLC as a Marketing Tool in the Video Game Industry

This thesis deals with the phenomenon of DLC in the context of marketing communication. DLC or downloadable content expanding the basic game, is a relatively new concept in the video game industry and its role is increasingly important in marketing communication in video games. The main focus of this thesis is to map DLC and analyze its importance in marketing communication and public relations of video game titles of various genres. Theoretical part of the thesis is focused on explaining the basic principles of understanding a video game as a medium, the specifics of gaming industry and description of the DLC itself as a content and marketing tool in video games. The research part of the thesis is dedicated to three case studies which deal with video games of different genres. Case studies are focused both on the practice of video game publishing companies and on reception of DLC on the side of the fans. The games being focused on are The Witcher 3 (RPG or a role-playing game), Civilization V (strategy game) and Battlefield 4 (FPS or first-person shooter game). Case studies focus on the role of DLC in games, marketing communication about DLC and conversely its role in marketing communication, reception of DLC in gaming communities and specific functions of DLC dependent on the video game genre.
Marketing of digital distibution of gaming content: platform Steam between the years 2013 and 2015

This bachelor thesis deals with marketing of digital distribution of video gaming content. It covers concretely marketing of the greatest platform for digital distribution of gaming content called Steam. The thesis sets out to describe new trends in marketing of video game industry and explore through the case study Steam marketing activities between years 2013 and 2015. It poses the question: How does Steam communicate with its community and what effect does it have on the specific target group, like gamers are, to keep its dominant position on video game industry market. The theoretical part clarifies the key terms for the thesis like video game, gamer and communities and last but not least, video game industry. Thesis also describes monetization of video games and video game content, video game publishing and distribution. Furthermore it deals with marketing itself and with current marketing trends that could be used in video game marketing and in the marketing of digitally distributed gaming content. The practical part uses SWOT analysis and case study to understand why is Steam the most successful platform for digital distribution of gaming content and offers recommendations.

Fan art in official promotion of video games

With the rise of Internet, Web and new media technologies come increased opportunities for audience to recreate media content and influence its flow across different media platforms. The fan as a demanding yet enthusiastic consumer has become a centrepiece of media industries' marketing strategies. On the one hand, this qualitative change often described as participatory culture means a giant leap forward for fans, who can now serve new roles within the media industry. On the other, it represents a potential exploitation of media users, as unpaid volunteers do the labour professionals are paid for. This study investigates this tension in a case of videogame fans. On their official websites, videogame developers encourage fans to contribute with their fan art harnessing fan creativity for their advertising purposes. Convergence culture raises conflicts and compromises between creators of fan art (fan artists), and the owners of the copyrighted works they appropriate (game companies). This study addresses three main issues: (1) the way and circumstances under which game companies are displaying fan art on their official websites, (2) how fans understand the tensions between empowerment and exploitation, how do they address the issue of free labour, (3) how fans view issues concerning intellectual property...

Phishing in the gaming industry

This bachelor thesis deals with a currently major issue of cyber security, which is phishing. The study is also specific in that it is focused on the gaming industry, which is subjected to a detailed analysis. The first goal of thesis is to acquaint the reader with problems of security risks of phishing in general and in game related fields. To achieve this goal, in the introduction of the theoretical part of the work, the general problem of phishing with a view on historical development and expansion is presented. Furthermore is described topic of gaming industry, its trends of videogames and security risks of online trading. The second goal is to give future and existing Steam users an overview of common phish-ing attacks and countermeasures. To achieve this goal, in the analytical part of the work, a specific gaming platform in online trading and distribution of game is selected, Steam from Valve. In the practical part of the work, eight selected phishing attacks are conducted to brief analysis and completed into a final evaluation and countermesures of all attacks.
