Analysis of the Depiction of Ukrainian Women in The First Months after the Russian Invasion of Ukraine

This diploma thesis regards the media construction of the portrayal of Ukrainian women in the context of the war in Ukraine. From the very beginning, the war was heavily covered by media, and gendered stereotypes began to manifest itself in the early days. In the theoretical part, therefore, the work deals with the construction of gender roles in war conflicts and sexualized violence, as well as the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The methodological part then presents research methods. These are quantitative content analysis, which aims to find out which topics are most often associated with Ukrainian women. The sources for quantitative analysis are articles from serious and tabloid online servers that contain selected keywords. From the sample are for critical discursive analysis selected articles with typical and also with deviating framing. The aim of the research is to map what framing of texts and setting of the agenda are the media using to portray the situation of Ukrainian women and what ideological structures this news framing has. Another research question is how the construction of masculinity and femininity in a war context is reflected in individual articles.
Wearing Gender: Men's Take on Fashion

The presented work deals with the male perspective on fashion and dressing. Clothing works with various means of communication, which are used with greater or lesser awareness of the individual. The main aim of this work is to find out how this communication is formed. In other words, it is a study of what goes into men's thinking and decision-making when it comes to clothing and what role their gender expression plays in this process. The work first presents several theoretical concepts that are inevitably connected with this topic. It is further enriched by qualitative research, which presents the mentioned topics in Czech context through 11 interviews with men of two age categories. Subsequent findings are approached through the lens of the grounded theory method. The key decision-making element turned out to be the everyday experience, which is manifested in the events in which men participate on a given day. An important aspect in men's lives are also external influences, which can come from a personal level, mainly represented by their life partners, or from a community level, exemplified by interests and leisure activities. Representation of Masculinity in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings

This bachelor thesis deals with various types of masculinity as represented by male characters in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and their comparison with stereotypical gender roles and the portrayal of male characters in the fantasy literature genre. The first part focuses on Tolkien's life and the influences on his writing and gives a review of the criticism of Tolkien's work. It also introduces the debate of sexism related to the stereotypical portrayal of female characters and their scarcity in the story. The second part is a brief introduction to the gender studies of femininity and masculinity, and the fantasy genre. The third part is the analysis of the main races of Middle-earth and selected characters - Aragorn, Samwise Gamgee, Frodo Baggins, and fraternal pair Boromir and Faramir - in the context of masculinity.
Ethical aspects of photojournalism with focus on sports

Theoretical part of this bachelor's thesis utilizes relevant scholar literature and interviews with photographers to define ethically disputed aspects of photojournalism such as invasion of privacy, media coverage of crises, depiction of violence, death and nudity, as well as picture manipulation - both before a photography is taken and during postproduction process. The thesis particularly focuses on sports photography and ethically disputed aspects related specifically to this field. Followingly, it lays out the limits of photographic display - which are crucial to discuss in relation to the subject of this text - and the trinity of basic principles regarding ethical decision-making (utilitarian principal, absolutist principal, golden rule) that should be considered by photojournalists and picture editors while publishing images that might be considered ethically controversial. Practical part of this thesis captures youth football team FK Admira Prague during 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons. It shows their training, matches and the backstage of their football world - both its light and dark sides.
Gender roles in fairy tales

Fairy tales have an educational and socialization impact on children. In fairy tales children find answers to questions, problems and situations, that life brings them. Fairy tales reflect true life - people come into the world, fall ill, die, get poorer, steal, get jealous, love and hate to death and they are willing to lay down their life for helping others. A child feels genuineness of story, finds something what it had experienced itself. Children identify themselves with fairy tale characters and their characteristics, heroes of stories are their models. So naturally children create their hierarchy of values, because moral message of fairy tales is clear and that is its advantage for children. Fairy tales interfere in all aspects of life and education. One of the aspects is the area of gender. In my research I presented the children a traditional fairy tale and less traditional fairy tale, where male and female roles are reversed. The aim of the research was to find out how boys and girls perceive the division of roles in fairy tales. I led structured interviews with children and compared the collected data with the gathered theoretical information.
Cross-cultural perception of attractiveness and its correlates: the role of visual modalities

This work reviews the literature on the topic of intercultural perception of human attractiveness with special focus on recent videostimuli-using research. The first section introduces several basic perspectives on ecological-evolutionary view of attractiveness. The next section deals with intercultural differences in attractiveness perception dicussing possible explanations of these differences. The third chapter focuses on faces of people of cross-culture origin and usage of composite stimuli and artificially manipulated stimuli in inter-cultural research. The fourth chapter examines the usage of videostimuli in attractiveness research. I also add information about intercultural usage of videostimuli as far as these are available. Finally, I discuss a possible source of result ambiguity and highlight the potential use of videostimuli in intercultural research of attractiveness perception. Gender stereotypes in TV car commercials

Gender stereotypes and the prejudices associated with them are a frequently discussed issue in the society as well as in the academic world. Even though there is certain evidence of the changes in the media presentation of masculine and feminine roles, the stereotypical illustration of men and women still persists and the media have a significant impact on gender socialisation (Renzetti, Curran, 2003). TV advertising is a typical example of a media format presenting masculine and feminine genders unequally. This thesis examines this assumption focusing on the TV advertising of cars. I also follow-up on my bachelor thesis in which I dealt with the gender stereotypes in the TV advertising for children. In the research background and theory I concentrate on the general understanding of the biological and social views of gender, gender development and gender socialisation. I also provide a short introduction to the media as well as TV advertising theory. Construction of gender identity within the series Dokonalý svět /the perfect world

The thesis analyzes the instruments of gender stereotypes reproduction and gender identity construction in Czech TV series Dokonalý svět. Is the media content gendered? With which instruments of gender stereotypes reproduction and gender identity construction is TV viewer confronted and on which levels? I use the theory of social construction of reality, the theory of the lenses of gender or the characters and narrative structure of the TV series (soup opera) to come to a conclusion. The thesis focuses on the fact that Dokonalý svět does not only reflect the stereotypes on the other hand. It confronts the standard gender orders by the comic character. The comedy character ridicules some gender stereotypes and shakes their social status.
The Masculine World of Poker: A Qualitative Study of Women at Poker Tables

The thesis is focused on masculinity and gender stereotypes in poker environment. The author studies how female poker players have entered the poker environment and what enabled them to do so. What problems did players encounter in the beginnings of their poker careers and how they dealt with these obstacles? Part of the work is also an analysis of gender- based stereotypes in poker environment encountered by female players. The author explains whether and how women adjust their competitive game strategy depending on whether they play against women or men. In the end the, the Author studies what is it like to be a female poker player rout of the casino space. How does their closest ones perceive this "strange" profession? How challenging is poker and are there any limitations for women playing poker? In the theoretical part, the author presents the theoretical basis of research, i.e., gender studies, gender stereotypes, feminity and masculinity, sociology of sport and provides a brief overview of the current sociological research of poker.
