Eating Disorders from a gender perspective: disease, or part of life? Bc. Kristýna Kaválková ABSTRACT This dissertation deals with a problem of "eating disorders", which are defined in medical literature, media and magazines as psychological disease, which relates to pathological way of dealing with food, body and himself/herself. It shows that that this area is not neutral from the gender point of view; eating disorders are usually women's matter. Based on semi-structured interviews within the framework of qualitative research, this work analyses opinions of women, who have experience with this, especially their experience of their physicality and daily life. It is also focused on how women perceive the presentation of eating disorders, which concerns them, in media, medical publications and society and how they interpret their status as those who are recovering from this illness. Women's testimonies point at the fact that their surroundings look at them as persons defined through their illness, as persons, who are exclusively connected with pathology and stigma. This view of surroundings, media and specialists, however, omit the diversity of human identities. It shows that women alone can interpret their experiences in different way. PhDr. Alice Němcová Tejkalová, Ph.D. Master Thesis: How Gendered Discrimination limits Women's Professional Practice in Conflict Reporting in Latin America English Abstract As war journalism is widely regarded as a men's domain, gendered discrimination limits women's professional practice in conflict reporting in Latin America. A continent, which is not only the deadliest region for journalists worldwide but also overly sexist due to patriarchal structures deeply rooted within Latin American cultures called "machismo". Based on a feminist theoretical framework and a phenomenological approach, female journalists' experiences and coping mechanisms with gendered discrimination were examined by conducting semi-structured interviews with ten Latin American journalists. The study shows, that female journalists in Latin America are sexualized, valued for their looks instead of their journalistic skills and often denied to cover certain beats and topics. This censors and silences female journalists as they are changing the way they practice journalism by not taking on risky tasks, moving to another country or stop exercising journalism altogether. It's a boy! (Not only) the gender issue of the ways childbirth is shown in film

This bachelor thesis deals with the depiction of birthing woman in film through the perspective of gender and feminist theories. The first part makes the reader familiar with the history of obstetrics in relation to the issues of gender. It sketches a parallel between the social roots of obstetrics and impulses for the first feminist movement. In the second part the thesis looks closer into the constructive and performative nature of gender and gender roles and most importantly it deals with benefits and pitfalls of motherhood according to feminist theoreticians. For this purpose, it introduces selected concepts of Shulamith Firestone, Adrienne Rich and Julia Kristeva. The third part analyses potential reasons, why the portrayal of childbirth has been historically pushed aside and why, as a consequence, there is no female childbirth narrative, which would equip women with means to express their experience. The fourth part seeks this missing narrative in particular examples among nonfiction as well as fiction works from contemporary cinema as well as from from its history.

Women's rights and their position in Turkey based on selected specialized text

Women's rights and their position became part of political and specialized discussions already at the end of Ottoman empire and remain such during establishing new Turkish republic as well during accession dialogue of Turkey to the European Union or joining the global women's human rights regime. However, I will argue, that this legislative changes are not sufficient for improvement of women's position within society, which is so trongly influenced by Islamic traditional culture. Therefore, in this work I will try to search for the roots of this conflict between Islamic traditional and modern society and their impact on women's position in Turkey. To do so, I will use qualitative content analysis of feminist and postcolonialist texts and also will focus on historic context. At the same time I will examine how contemporary Turkish society, which is in the first place focused on collective identity, deal with individual identity, that is necessary for promoting and claiming human rights for each person as individual.

Phenomenom analysis of internet videoclips as a cause of cyber-bullying

The work relates to the increasingly frequent cases of attacks on young people who act in their own videos, which are becoming the social network phenomenon. Young people are presented through a variety of audiovisual contents which is then aggressively attacked and massively shared. This paper seeks the causes of such behavior of recipients. In the first part I describe the context in which videos are produced, what is the impact and response. I refer to the reaction of media and ordinary Internet users. In the analytical part I use different tools through which I try to penetrate deeper into the structure of those videos, find out what fail and try to reveal where is the cause of fascination and motivation to aggressive incursions. I watch mainly symptomatic scope of these videos and looking how it relates to society and ideology. I analyze videos primarily in terms of neoformalistic analysis, semiology, mythology,cultural studies, feminist theory and psychoanalysis. Through these methods I discover latent dimensions that video clips can possibly contain. The study focuses only on videos in which appearing young girls. One of the objectives of this study is to identify precisely the possible influence of gender and how the reception is motivated by sexuality.
