Phrasal compounds in fiction and their translation into Czech
Mitlenerová, Silvie ; Klégr, Aleš (advisor) ; Tichý, Ondřej (referee)
This diploma thesis analyses issues of translation of phrasal compounds from English to Czech language (in fiction). All examples observed have been chosen from the database of fiction texts that is incorporated in the project InterCorp (v. 7). In particular, the thesis deals with phrasal compounds in premodifying position. The corpus analysis of Czech translation shows that phrasal compounds can be categorized in various groups, and there can also be various approaches to translation. These two sets of categories do not always necessarily overlap. The diploma thesis is based on the categorization of the translations; in each category, several examples are selected and commented upon in more detail. In Conclusion, the findings of these subchapters are summed up and the level of translation work is evaluated in general terms. In the final section, few thoughts about general recommendations for translators are formulated as well - can there be any general recommendation? Or is there a "best approach" for each individual case as it was noticeable throughout the paper? Key words: phrasal compounds, translation, corpus analysis, premodifiers
Corpus analysis of the functions of the French adverbial en effet
Kocháňová, Alena ; Nádvorníková, Olga (advisor) ; Loucká, Hana (referee)
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the function of the French adverbial collocation en effet by applying contrastive bidrectional analysis on corpus material. The goal is to find out which factors influence its functions and meanings. En effet has two main roles: it either expresses the cause and works as an argumentative connector between sentences or it is an adverb of confirmation. This double role is reflected in the Czech language as well, where the equivalents of en effet can be totiž as well as skutečně. This paper aims to find out which function of en effet prevails in which conditions and whether the equivalents offered in Czech-French dictionaries correspond to the real practical use of en effet. The analysis is done on four types of texts - novels, newspaper articles, law texts acquis communautaire of the EU and the speeches given by the EU MPs in the European parliament. Four factors are analysed: frequency, position and argumentative/confirmative type of en effet in the texts as well as its Czech translations. This will enable us to contrast en effet with its potential synonyms effectivement and en fait. The French corpus Frantext as well as the Czech-French and French-Czech part of the parallel corpus InterCorp are used for the analysis. The first part of the thesis deals with...
On the use of the progressive in the modern German language
Boček, Lukáš ; Šemelík, Martin (advisor) ; Hejhalová, Věra (referee)
This bachelor thesis is concerned with the use of progressive form in the contemporary German language. The first part gives a definition of the progressive form and compares its description in the existing (and mostly newest) grammar books. It also deals with other related topics such as the category of aspect. In spite of the fact that the progressive form appears in both contemporary spoken and written German, it has been widely discussed whether it belongs to the standard language or not. The second part is based on a corpus analysis (DeReKo and DWDS) and investigates the use of progressive form by means of several examples. In addition, the thesis aims at resolving the status of the progressive form in the German language. It inclines to the view that the progressive form belongs to the standard contemporary German which should be reflected by the standard-setting instances accordingly.
