Top hat for everyone: The image of Britain in the newspaper discourses of Czechoslovak exile and its Third Republic afterlife
Kłusek, Johana ; Smetana, Vít (advisor) ; Brenner, Christiane (referee) ; Cornwall, Mark (referee)
The thesis focuses on the image of Britain in newspaper discourses of Czechoslovak exile during the Second World War and describes how it affected the post-war development of the country. It argues that the exiles saw Britain as the appelative Other, into which they projected their visions and fears. Anglophilia, born out of lived experience as well as objective needs of the discourse's producers, brought both benefits and detriments. It meant discursive liberation from Germans as the old referential Others and finding a safe discursive space in the severely brutalized world. Yet the hope that Czechoslovakia could adopt both "conservative" and "socially progressive" qualities of Britain proved naïve in the face of the post-war geopolitical reality. Communists appropriated the image of Britain to fit their own needs after the war. While Britain of former exiles, now democratic socialists, was still portrayed as superior to Czechoslovakia, communist Britain was depicted as an equal partner with virtues as well as flaws. The "equalization" of Britain contributed to the preservation of illusion that Communists were devoted to the principles of democracy.

Lehečková Neumannová, Jana ; Míšková, Alena (advisor) ; Koura, Petr (referee)
This diploma thesis examines the Czechoslovak-British relations between 1945 and 1948 primarily by analysing documents found in the Archive of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic. The thesis focuses on the politico-diplomatic relations and describes their evolution with regards to events of major importance to both involved countries; such as parliamentary elections, the question of German population transfer, or the attitude of Czechoslovakia and the United Kingdom towards the Marshall Plan. The thesis is divided into six chapters and spans the conception of the Czechoslovak foreign policy, based on cooperation with the East, as well as the West; the evolution of the bilateral relations, which were influenced by, inter alia, parliamentary elections in both countries; and the mutual foreign visits. The post-war period is being examined until February 1948 when the change in political regime resulted in deterioration of the bilateral relations between the two countries.
The Self-Representation of Bretons in the Regionalist Discourse between the late 19th Century and the First World War.
Comparison of the Czechoslovak 1st and 2nd republic from the point of view of the theory of authoritarian regimes by Juan J. Linz
Svoboda, Ladislav ; Mlejnek, Josef (advisor) ; Kubát, Michal (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with pair of domestic regimes known as the second and third | Czechoslovakian republic. The choice of these periods of the national history was conditioned by a relative absence of comparative political scientific works on these periods and by timelessness and topicality of the studying of domestic regimes, that refused the idea of a liberal democracy twice in ten years. The goal of the diploma thesis is to analyze, compare and categorize the second and the third Czechoslovakian republic in the framework provided by the theory of authoritarian and totalitarian regimes by Juan J. Linz. In the first part the thesis describes the theoretical framework of the theory of authoritarian and totalitarian regimes with stress on the theory of authoritarian regimes, as it is the assumption of the thesis, that both the second and the third republic were cases of authoritarian regimes. The other parts of theory which deal with totalitarian and sultanistic regimes are only briefly mentioned. In the second part of the thesis there is an analysis and comparison of both regimes based on three research questions. In this part the thesis deals with the relationship of both studied regimes with the first republic and their relationship with a liberal democracy, then it deals with the very analysis in...
Postwar purge of czech cinematography in 1945-1946.
Černá, Zuzana ; Klimeš, Ivan (advisor) ; Czesany Dvořáková, Tereza (referee)
This thesis concerns the process of Postwar purge, a purge which was being carried out by the Disciplinary Board of the Union of Czech film workers, in film industry after the Second World War. Even before establishing the Retribution Decrees, revolutionary denazification commissions came into being in many areas of public life. These commissions tried workers co-operating with invaders with absolutely no legal basis. The film industry, a kind of mass media which was on the front burner, also underwent this process under the supervision of a new cinematography leadership. The new leadership's aim was to nationalise the film branch. The aim of this thesis is to make clear who was tried by the commission and under what conditions, how the commission arbitrated and who were its members. Another goal is to imply how they influenced the next course of post-war Czechoslovak cinematography.

Rieger, Matyáš ; Klimeš, David (advisor) ; Halada, Jan (referee)
Private local brand promotion during "Third republic" period: Rudolf Poborsky's distillery Summary This thesis targets to explore how the uprising communist power impacted corporate communication. Although communists declared allowance of small business existence, they have destroyed it later. Communication investigation reveals hot topics of the era and - in this small local scale - entrepreneurs' approach. The case study of a family distillery delivers the story in a very human way and shows owners' personal journeys rather than deep analysis of the current political situation as such. The thesis aims to show how owner's attitude contributes to the communication with customers and in what situation these small businesses found themselves during Third republic. In this particular case; I aimed to generalize thesis' conclusions by demonstrating other businesses in the same field. I've performed the research using mainly own family's private archive, which contains a comprehensive collection of both company and private communication documents. I've used the books "Proměny české společnosti 1948-1960" by Karel Kaplan to support those historical parts and "Kapitalismus na kolenou" by Jakub Rákosník to explore economic situation of the period. Investigation proved these businessmen managed to embed their...
